If you own a PSX (or, erm, a PSX emulator..) I'd suggest Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, Suikoden or Xenogears. The recent EA RPGs are pretty meh if compared to the standards of yore (such as Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights) - Dragon Age: Origins, for instance, felt so... bland.

Downside is, if you don't have a 360 or a ps3, you can't play it :/

The greatest experience I ever had with RPGs was when I played ULTIMA VII, VIII and IX a long long time ago when they were cutting edge. Main reason I believe was that I played these games at an age when video games still impressed me.

Here's the trailer if you don't know it already: Yeah check out Dragon Age: Origins. Don't even think about the second one, it wasn't worth the money at all. Also check out Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3 is coming out soon, they are amazing games with a compelling story, good characters, and fun game play. Also check out Fallout 3. It was kinda like Skyrim but apocalyptic and with guns. It was a lot of fun and I put a lot of time into it. I didn't like New Vegas much, it just lacked the atmosphere and feel of 3 in my opinion.

For good reference, http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/acz2t/let_me_tell_you_about_demons_souls/ sorry, but i disagree. I found the game extremely easy on both a knight and a royalty play through, the difficulty comes from not farming (and stupid things like falling in holes). After I beat the first two stages (which too forever, and were the actual game i might add) the game got really boring and i beat it without dying soon after.

I play NWN2 and it's a pretty fun game to play that's not too difficult. I loved my dual wielding 2H weapon ranger with some great cleave action.

yeah your buff/disable mage is the best possible party member, but sitting there autoattacking isn't what i want my mage to be doing the whole game. all the good damage spells deal immense friendly fire, it's like you can pick between having a defiler/sentry combo or a siege tank that casts BW storms, but all your allies are SC2 zerglings. That being said there is some fun to be had playing a very bad character in DA:O since it takes alot of skill, but honestly auto-attacking as a mage. NWN2 Warlock you'd love, especially once you get hellfire $_$

It's unfortunate you don't like scifi. Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are really good games.
