I have finally finished all of my coursework due by the first semester and am now off of uni for 3 weeks. I will hence begin with my improvement experiment and attempt it over the next 2 weeks.

However, since then, reading a post TangStarcraft made on his TvZ 111 build and other circumstances, I have decided to change my focus and improve my experiment a bit. Can you really get higher than Gold League from doing just 111?

How each week will play out:
  • I will focus at least 2 hours per day to laddering.
  • I will analyse any loss for mistakes I made and correct three of the biggest mistakes I've made.
  • I will do one primary build order regardless of matchup, listed below.
  • Once the two weeks are up, I will compete in a small scale open tournament ASAP.

My opening:

TvX portion
10 Depot
12 Barracks
13 Refinery
15 Orbital Command
15 Marine
16 Supply Depot
18 Factory (@100 gas)
20 Refinery
23 Supply Depot
@100% Factory - Starport, Hellion
~100% Hellion - Tech Lab on Factory
@100% Tech Lab on Factory - Siege Tank, Siege Mode

However, I will make several variations both to the build order and game plan depending on my matchup. This is based on what I currently learned from my first day (today.) By the end of the 2 weeks, I hope that I will improve my game sense and game plan through trial and error and experimentation:

TvZ:
Push out with a 5 marine 1 hellion push. Then focus on Banshee harassment (to force either Hydralisks or Mutalisks before the Zerg has the chance to get a 3 base economy kicking) and pressure with a push of around 5 siege tanks and mass marines.

Spend the first 100 Energy of my Orbital Command on MULEs (As realistically, this build should be able to hold 1 base Zerg play with ease, plus it's uncommon.)

TvT:
Use the 1 hellion to gain watchtower presence in order to scout any potential pushes.

Only spend the first 50 OC energy on MULEs. Scan at 5:30 for any potential Banshee play. Transition to Viking first if it's coming.

Make marine medivac tank, if no push is imminent, do a marine tank drop stealthily and inflict huge damage. Either transition into Banshee harassment or 2 base marine tank medivac aggressive drop play.

TvP
Spend the first 100 OC energy on MULEs. Pool the next 50 energy in case of a 3/4 gate DT attack on 1 base.

Use the 1 hellion to gain watchtower presence unless a Stalker is guarding the XNW.

Go for a 8 minute marine tank banshee push (not really an all in, just an aggressive push). Transition into 2 base biomech + banshee harassment. Go 3-2-2 (3 rax, 2 factory, 2 port.) Add Ghosts and mimic the number of bases the Protoss has for the late game macro race.

Yes. You can get farther than Gold with 111

I've gotten from Bronze to Masters with just Baneling bust and 3RR (BB for Z/T & Protoss who FFE, 3RR for non-expanding Protosses). 232 games lost, 254 games won.

If you're wondering how good I am, I am mid Platinum when I macro and try to use proper unit control.

There's no point to it though, you don't gain anything by playing higher opponents you can't legitimately beat under your strategic thinking and understanding of the game.

You absolutely can get higher than gold with 1/1/1s if you practice them ! Even with the Immortal buff, top Protosses get maimed pretty often by the "classic" 1/1/1. That TvZ Banshee thing is Fin's go-to build in the match up on the ladder games he streams, so you can watch him to learn more about that I guess. He expands some time after the banshee (usually) though, I dont know if you plan on doing that. And ye, some sort of 1/1/1 variant is really really standard TvT. So if you keep practicing this stuff (and gj for having a pretty solid idea of what you want to do !), you can get promoted in no time !

But keep in mind the ladder is locked right now (and idk for how long) so don't be upset if you dont get promoted for a while. ^_^

GL !

Edit: Dammit Torte, I was all sad when you managed to brank masters before me and it turns out you cheesed your way there ?! For shame !

Oh no, I got there legitimately that time I think, then I stopped playing. Came back and dropped to bronze because I couldn't play like I did before and I wanted to work on relearning the game.

Ended up cheesing to Masters again.
then I dropped to bronze again saying I would learn Terran, couldn't beat Silver leagues, so I just played as Zerg and now I'm in rank 7 platinum ;D!

Good luck with that, I think any build could be utilized to get to a high level.

On a completely separate note, i'm so jealous of you I have this pile of work to do this weekend :/

Lovely, my blog gets (undeservingly) swarmed with 1 star ratings.

Why do you hate me or rather the idea of ladder blogs, TL? What have I ever done to deserve idiots on my last post trashing me with things like "LINK 'EXPLAINING' WHY YOUR LADDER BLOG SUCKS LOL"

Like this or this example of the OP of that very same blog talking about my reaction.

I made an effort on the post I made ~3 weeks ago, but I just got downranked so hard.

I gave you a rating so it would let me see your ratings (1 star ofc, it just felt right given the circumstances), and it turns out you only had two 1 star ratings when you complained. Kinda funny in a way.

Anyway, I find it pretty weird how I was the one who wrote the big "stfu with your ladder blog" thing, but I'm usually pretty nice and (try to be helpful) when I see them. : )

Edit: OH you're that jackass who I tried to help last time but got really pissy about the anti-ladder blog blogblog ! Hey man !

Master terran, but stopped playing at the start of S4. I open 1-1-1 every game, but don't do it allin-ishly.

Anyways, the way the term 1-1-1 is used nowadays was evolved from it's original meaning. 1-1-1 means 1-rax 1-fact 1-starport. But 1-1-1 nowadays implies an allin.

I really dunno how to reply to somebody who just merely links a ladder blog bashing post made by another player on a ladder blog in an attempt to moronically bash it, but let me make these points.

1.This sort of statement does describe most low level ladder games but it's mentally retarded to just post this on a blog that's mostly just me trying to hammer down a build order, as in putting in the effort to improve my macro through repetition. Yes, it's not me saying "HAY GUISE, HERE'S MY SUCKY LADDER STINT"

Show nested quote +
There’s nothing to learn from them, they’re either you rushing and winning in 6 minutes or you getting rushed and losing in 6 minutes, or, at best, they’re a long “epic” game that is actually two people sitting on their ass for 40 minutes and then a-moving at each other.

Yeah, that didn't really describe 3 of the 4 practice games I had.

As I said, game 1 involved me fucking up a timing considerably through both moderate supply blockages and not attacking the correct base and letting my opponent get a literal "Roach deathball" on 3 bases to counterattack me to death. It was effectively a macro game with 2 battles, not one.

Game 2 involved me trying to attack with a Stargate timing, failing to get the third hatchery down without losing a Void Ray and then being at the mercy of pure roach hydra on 3 base because of both my lack of production and tech and because of my greediness/retardation to try and take the gold while I had lost almost my whole army.

Game 3 was probably accurate as far as that description goes. I wasn't advertising it as an "epic game" but rather a colossally fucked up 2 base colossus timing, mainly balls'd up due to my shitty micro and pre-occupation with clearing the XNWs in order to try and hide my colossus (and then losing my whole army as a result.)

As for Game 4, yes, a 3 pylon blockade was cheese, but it didn't really succeed, considering I got counter-cheesed by a 1 base nydus. That's already more interesting than a game that's just two maxed armies clashing and the winner of the engagement winning the game.

2. On the "shitty writer" point, I used to write ladder/game improvement blogs with a huge synopsis on games and replay analysis, but I felt more like I was writing synopses on shitty play than actually practicing. That's why I tried to shorten things down considerably.

It takes time to write interesting shit. Lots and lots of time.

Do you honestly think that these brilliant ladder blog posts mentioned are written out of the blue in the space of 15 minutes by geniuses? Nope.

Obviously while some of the captions are probably made up on the spot in an amusing style, getting screenshots of interesting moments and game analysis takes MUCH longer.

As for if they include replays or replay packs with their posts.... there's the issue of uploading them all to a site like say.... sc2replayed, drop.sc etc, or in the case of replay packs having to deal with horrible file hosting sites like Megaupload and Rapidshare etc.

Show nested quote +
So you just want to share your progress as a player. Innocent enough, right? But you can’t just upload a bunch of replays from that “sick practice session with your bro who’s totally in platinum, man” and expect anyone with the capacity to change to page not to. If you played a great game in particular, write a battle report or something. If you dont know, all that means is taking screenshots from the game and using (interesting) comments to tell the story of the game. Hell, even if the game isn’t great, you can make it great.

Perhaps one of the best known battle reports is the story of Proberto, which you can find here. It’s BW, which some of you may not be too familiar with, but go ahead and read it anyway. I’ll wait.

Great. See how unspectacular that game was? But Chef is an amazing writer, so he made the game great. That’s what you, Mr. Ladder Blogger, need to do. I’ve done it myself several times, all shameless linked here. If I, a person without an ounce of funny inside my entire being, can write battle reports about mediocre, low level games and have them be well received, you can do. Just stop being lazy and do it.

While I’m at it, I gotta shout out Gheed for perhaps exemplifying this point best. The f**ker just sits there and worker rushes people. Doesn’t exactly make for the most interesting games in the universe. But Gheed is funny as hell and he makes it work. Find a sample of his adventures here.

I don't exactly want to drop f-bombs everywhere, but I suppose the replay screenshots and funny/amusing/interesting captions are a good way to engage the reader. I will note this down in future progress blogs.

I think if you're calling me a jackass because I called out some guy who read your blog for just moronically linking your post (that's right, just linking it, no constructive criticism, as if it's a "some guy bashed ladder blogs, what the hell are you doing posting a ladder blog" thing.) I think you need to change your priorities if that's reason to call me a jackass.

It's strange that you use a "first 100 energy on mules, then save 1 scan in case of DTs", I'm pretty sure most people just use the in game timer and save a scan around 7~ minutes in.

As demonstrated by many, you can win at GSL levels with 111. The fact you're doing it every match won't matter since your opponents don't know you. You can get GM with 111 every game I'm sure, it's even stronger TvP than TvZ (not sure how it fares in TvT, but I'm sure it does well there too lol)

1-1-1 every game was always more reliable than 4gate across matchups i think, and 4gate every game will still get you to masters, good luck
