I might consider google + because its functionality makes sense to me. Putting your family, friends and colleagues all into one group on facebook defeats the purpose for me. There are things I talk to my family about but not to my friends and so on. Also, it beggars my definition of friendship. I have maybe 3 "close" friends, 20 people whose company I enjoy and the rest are acquintances. I know I'm a bit of a hermit but I don't "get" people who have 650 "friends". That dude 3 cubicles away is not a "friend", hes just a colleague who you don't share any interests with who you added on an internet site. I guess I'm old fashioned. Sure social media is changing the world. In some places and situations it makes sense. I find a phone call, a visit or an email to be much more meaninful that a scribble on a wall or a twitter update. Too many sheeple following the trends just in case they will be considered uncool imo!

I don't like facebook much either. I still have one though. I also think it'd be cool if cell phones didn't exist, but that's just me.

People can email me, I can phone anyone in North America with google for free, I can use skype for international ppl. True that dude I'm doing the same thing and it keeps drama out of my life as well which is my main reason for doing it (also don't like to know too much about my buddies, some things people post that they should keep to themselves on those sites lol).

As far as im concerned you sound about as weird and strange as someone ranting that they hate mobile phones becuase it ruins real life communication or some other rubbish. I heard technology is a good way to communicate over long distance.... I wouldn't say it's just "some sort of hipster trend." To be honest, while I was in college, like many college students, I checked my facebook everyday... often multiple times a day. I went to China for 3 weeks, and without a VPN I was forcibly weaned off facebook. At first I missed it and felt terribly disconnected, but later when I came back to the states and logged on I found myself...kind of starting to hate it. I will say though that my mentality is somewhat different from the OP's. My dislike for it stemmed from its promotion of narcissistic tendencies, its encouragement of over sharing, the inundation of people's every thought or mood on your newsfeed as soon as you long on, and many people's obsession with their 'online persona' (having a facebook gives you control of people's perception of you, something not entirely in your control irl. for example, on facebook many of my friends hide all their tagged pictures and have only a handful profile pictures of them doing extremely exciting things or looking wildly hot.. in real life you can't always present an attractive image of yourself to everyone you meet, or hide away bad embarrassing moments). Not to say that I don't think facebook has its benefits -- it's a great tool for keeping in touch with friends, especially people who are not on the level that you'd send them long emails, but would want to just say hi and ask what's up. I just think that in some ways, like many things in life, facebook can be both a blessing and a curse .

One can have fun and keep in touch with friends and new stuff with facebook, but you still fine w/o facebook so...whatever. Its not like 4-5 years ago when facebook is the cool thing to do.

To me, he comes off as saying joining groups, organizing "party" events or connecting with people on Facebook is lame compared to what he does. Thing is, it's not like Facebook interferes or limits my connections with people in real life. One is uniquely enjoyable on its own. I charge my phone every day. So what? And even if it's not someone close, I will always appreciate him or her contacting me and asking me how I am doing. I value that more than watching movies or working out, as the OP seems to do. I am not going to try to change the way he thinks or acts, I don't care. But when you are doing things (such as writing this blog about how you are better than Facebook to a bunch of random people online), then yes, people are going to get irked.
