The cure to frustration?

As I mentioned in my first blog post, I am a new Zerg player and am in the Bronze league. Lately I have been playing some ladder games, and I think I am steadily making improvements to my gameplay. I seem to be able to get things done faster, and I have my 7 roach rush worked out pretty well.

At this point though, I am starting to get frustrated. I play ladder games and win say 3 in a row, taking me from 90ish in my league to the mid 40's. As soon as I lose, I get dropped back down to the 60's, because I was "slightly favored" even though the person I played was obviously better then I was.

For instance, I played 4 ladder games today. Three of the four I won, and the last game that I just played (not 30 minutes ago) I lost. When I won the three games I made it into the 40's in my league. The last game I lost to a terran who massed banshees, vikings, and marines, with what seemed like 100 missle turrets in his base. As soon as I lost this game, I instantly dropped 20 ranks in my league.

I am just extremely frustrated because I try to work my way up my league, but as soon as I lose a game, I lose what seems like 6 games worth of progress because I am "favored" when the person seems to be more skilled then me.

I just want to know how to not get so frustrated. Seeing this happen day after day makes me think I will never get out of the Bronze league, which I am working real hard to get out of.

The frustration leads to a loss in fun in the game, as most of you can probably understand. As much as I try to not get angry or frustrated, I am having a hard time doing it.

All opinions/ comments are welcome.

Thank you all and have a good day,

Venality

probably because its so early in the season. As the season progresses and your division stretches out, you'll jump less between games.

The only thing I can suggest is keep playing. Once you get a sample pool of say like 100 games instead of 10-20 games, battle.net will have a much better feeling of where your MMR should be. Don't get too discouraged, just keep playing and things will balance out.

Even if your rank may be going down, you're still going to get better just by playing more and getting game experience until you're playing people in higher leagues and you eventually get promoted.
Only the winner deserves to win.

As frustrating as it is to drop ranks in bronze, the goal shouldn't be to get to the top 25 in bronze, your goal should be consistently playing silver level players. after that your goal should be to consistently beat silver level players. play your 4 games then watch your replays and learn what you did wrong and develop a goal based upon that for your next 4 games. like if you notice that you drop in drone production or drop in queen injects, focus on that for the next 4. after you play those 4, evaluate how you did in your goal. before you know it you will then be playing silver level all the time and you won't have to worry about dropping in league rank.

Your points (which determine placement in your place in your division) have very little to do with your actual MMR, and it's your MMR and the associated confidence rating that determines whether you will be considered for placement into another league. You could be ranked 100'th in your division by points and still manage to place in silver if you consistently play at a silver level.

At the beginning of every season things in your division are always gong to be chaotic because everyone generally have a similar number of games played, the players who play (and win) more will tend to move towards the top over time (as they play more games), but in the beginning it doesn't take much to move up the division.

My friend and I were second in our division (bronze) for 2v2 during the first day of season 2, and if we won 1 more game we would have been placed first in the division for the first day. Of course, we've dropped much farther down since then because we tend to only play together 1 or 2 days a week, and only a couple games each time.

I was ranked 87 in Platinum when I got promoted to Diamond. It really is totally irrelevent until the top levels, even then its totally irrelevent to the pros too.

Ah alright, didn't know it worked that way. Just kind of depressing when I have won about 11 games, and watching my friend win 26, although he is playing Protoss, not trying to learn Zerg as I am right now.

Personally? Cigarettes. Although I don't really play sc2 at the moment, I get frustrated a lot playing other games and regularly take 5 minutes out for a cig and to clear my head. Obviously though, I don't recommend smoking, it really is just a personal fix.

It's actually pretty simple. Your frustrated because you are results oriented, your fun and enjoyment seems to be more tied to whether you win or lose and what happens to you in your division. You can't control these things though. Whether your favored or not, and to a large degree whether or not you win are entirely out of your control, and it just doesn't make sense to worry about them. You can't change them, so why let them make you miserable.

The solution is worry about what you can control, i.e. how you play your games. You cannot control if you win or lose, but you can certainly control your play, making better decisions both in game decisions, and what you choose to focus your attention on (macro, scouting, micro, etc).

Basically what I am getting at is that the game should be fun for you because you have fun playing the game. It shouldn't be the winning or losing that it is fun, but rather trying to decide strategies, macroing, defending, and microing battles that are enjoyable. If your focused on those things and you lose it becomes "oh well, I lost; but you still had fun doing everything in that game despite losing."

A significant number of people really do seem to have their enjoyment tied up to their results. I know so many people who if they start losing a couple games totally stop having fun. This makes no sense to me. Honestly this is no different than letting a boss from hell make your job suck. It doesn't make sense. Your boss is terrible, but you cannot control that. Why would you allow him to make you miserable?

You can't control if you win or lose, so why worry. Focus on the process of playing the game, and find your enjoyment in doing those things better. For example if you were focusing on battle microing, and happen to get matched vs a diamond, you will probably still lose; but if your control is far better than you have ever done it before, that should be rewarding and very enjoyable since you worked on the aspect you wanted to and did a great job. If it isn't fun for you to actually play starcraft don't play it. If its only winning thats fun and you get no enjoyment out of the actual playing of the game SC2 clearly isn't for you.

Are you always executing the 7RR? If you rush all your games and win, the system will believe you're better than you actually are. You're winning because you're rushing a single strategy all the time, not because you're actually better than the other player.

So I guess you should try to use some other BOs and experiment new stuff.

If this is not the case, ignore =P

No worries. Just have fun, and in time, you'll do better. I am still in Bronze and I get frustrated as well. You can always play custom games, team games, socialize, etc. and take a break from laddering.

As difficult as it is you just have to ignore the fact that you will bounce up and down the ladder. I almost hate it when I start getting on win streaks because I know then I'll be up against tough opponents for a while and get knocked right back down.

L_Master I fully understand where you are coming from, and I do enjoy SC2 when I play it, I am not just in it for the wins. I have fun and then just get a little frustrated when I lose when being 1 game from getting hot streak 5 .

Tschis, I have just been playing the 7 Roach Rush to get it down and memorized, but after I push with the roaches I transition into whatever I need to to counter the other person.

What are some other decent build orders? This isn't directed just at Tschis, but to everyone
