I am very torn that the moment. Lately I have started watching GSL as a friend from work sorta introduced me to it...and I gotta say it's pretty frigging awesome. I was so anti-SC2 initially and a hardcore BW fan...but now that SC2 is more developed it looks like it's shaping into a pretty good game.

Now I am tempted to actually buy the game and play it casual/competitively. However, this is a bit concerning for me because I have quit and come back to starcraft sooo many times...and now is another sort of turning point where I can choose to get into it or do something else.

I recently quit another hobby, so I am looking for a new one that is relatively social and getting some exercise in the process would be a bonus. Problem is that SC2 really doesn't provide any of this. I notice that I seem to get into starcraft when I am in these transitionary periods where I kinda just lost a previous hobby and am a bit bored...because starcraft in general is very easy to get into as you don't even need to leave your house.

The reason why I am a bit concerned is because, even though I am pretty sure I can control my levels of playing....overall...BW has been a pretty stressful experience with quite little rewards. I got into competitive BW in 06'...played on and off since then (though in the past 2 years I haven't played that much) and the only real benefit of that was calling myself "C-" which is pretty lame. Definitely can't put that on a resume or anything along those lines. I look back and think I should have done something more productive with my time. At the moment, I have a BIT of time to spare but not a ton. I go to university, I work part-time (actually I am in the process of quitting my job to get a new one, but I am pretty well always going to be working part-time), and I also DJ as a hobby so I am slightly concerned that if I would get into the game, it MIGHT eat up a bit too much of my time. I suppose that depends on my control levels, but I know that when I get into something (a hobby), I tend to REALLY get into it. Hard to say what would happen.

However, what attracts me to SC2 are a couple things. Firstly, more than likely I would be relatively high level pretty fast just purely from rts knowledge and mechanics (I'm thinking I could get to diamond/masters relatively fast). I played the beta as well so I am not completely new to playing SC2. I've also played at friend's houses so I am aware of the overall mechanics and how they are different from BW. So that's nice to know that just by starting a game, I am essentially not terrible at it (in comparison to random people who have no SC experience who just start playing). Secondly, I like how the mechanics are a bit easier. BW was very punishing in general; if I stopped playing for 1-3 weeks I would be extremely rusty and have to practice a lot in a short time span to compensate for it. I don't feel sc2 would be like that. The game definitely seems more user-friendly...which I actually like as I just want to play it casually, perhaps somewhat competitively but nothing extreme. Overall, just the ease of getting into the game is what attracts me to it, just based on my history with starcraft.

The alternative is that I find another social hobby. Clearly that sounds like the right answer, but that's also a good amount of work/effort to find a new hobby and group of people, compared to starcraft which I can ease into quit quickly. I am currently unsure.

Anyway, if anybody has any opinions on what they think of this situation, or if they are/have been in this situation, I'd like to hear them.

For reference, I am 20 years old, turning 21 in a month.

Save your $60. Gets boring after awhile, really. I guess teamplay is fun with friends, but 1v1? It really doesn't appeal to me.

As it stands, SC2 is nowhere even close to BW..

Your question is way too subjective. Literally every person's experience with the game is different. Only way to know for sure is to try.

It would be more actually. Need to upgrade my comp too...maybe $200 max.

The games are actually getting more fun, for me at least. With everyone's play becoming more refined and bigger maps in the map pool. I'm having way more fun in games than I was a month ago.

It's subjective though. If your ok spending the money, I think you should get it.

SC2 is boring if you're bad at it/make it boring.

Fierce competition is never boring.

Try out some sports or martial art or something if you want something social that can also give you some exercise. But there's nothing wrong with playing SC2 on the side if you want to. If you stay as a casual gamer, you probably won't put that much time into it.

Before there was that Master League, I played quite a few games on my friend's account (he was Diamond) and I won most games without having full knowledge of the game (I still don't, rofl :D), then I got bored of it. :/

There is plenty of competition on ICCup and it is also quite challenging.
tbh I'd rather play at the C-/C level in BW.

@Zapdos_Smith: yeah, just invest in a better hobby if you're going to be forced to upgrade your computer. Or play on a friend's computer to get a better feel for the game? At the end of the day, it's your call.

i dont really understand the question

if you find it fun, go for it, nothing forces you to play. im also not sure why people seem to think enjoying bw and sc2 are mutually exclusive...

As a C- BW player you will be instantly Masters in sc2.

And then you'll be able to say "I'm Masters." If calling yourself C- wasn't fulfilling, this won't be either.

I don't really think its a smart idea to switch to SC2 at this point in time, because of the fact that there are 2 more expansions coming. Why not just wait till Lotv? If you truly want to switch at that point, then do it.

I played Sc2 for a few months, it got boring pretty fast. Of course, chat channels are helping but BW is much more fun. Sc2... feels too... easy? Squishy? like toys?

I vote no.

ICCup is much more challenging, and not everything has been figured out/semi-figured out (hive-tech ZvZ erhem, + Show Spoiler [Stars v. FOX] +

UMS alone makes the game worth it. THe campaign, everything the game has to offer is hours upon hours of entertainment

It's best if you have friends to play with it when you aren't trying the 1v1 ladder .

If you play other games ont he PC in general it would be advisory to upgrade it regardless. Seems like there's a lot of bias against SC2, like it was a poorly made game. It's awesome.
I asked my friend how the ratio at a party was, he replied. "Let's just say for every guy there was two dudes."

True eon, out of most games this game will get you the most hours per buck. In a good way too. The only thing I can think that's more cost efficient for hours is Pokemon thats only a specific niche lol

Adeezy i like how youre very pro SC2 but the UMS is still not the greatest. one of the main problem that make that part of SC2 lacking is the restricted interface. If we were able to play games with freewill, we would explore much more deeply.

Yeah I don't like the interface limitations as well, but as for the positives, it's also very good. There's tons of very good games and it's easy to get into them, it's fast easy entertainment which is a good thing.
