Hi everyone. I'd like to start off by saying that I'm a 2800 Diamond Terran player. My ID on Bnet is SiN. I recently got second in the gosucoaching tournament, and am currently in the finals for the EG Masters tournament. I also came in second in the most recent Cybergrounds LAN. My stream thread is here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=175089
Anyways, I've recently started streaming. I streamed for a few hours today. I'm sure nobody reading this had noticed. I just finished playing 2 really awesome and epic TvTs. I looked to see how many viewers I had. 0. I had 0 viewers. Well, I had 1, me, who was checking to see if anybody will recognize how talented I am.
I look at those featured, whose skill level is not far from mine, and they have a bare minimum of 300 at any given time. The most I've had since I started streaming again two weeks ago is 4: me, my brother trying to make sure the stream was working correctly, and 2 others. It's very discouraging. There are several streamers who got featured within days or even hours of posting their streams. I've played all of them. I've beaten most of them. I'm completely unknown. My stream is of good quality(I think), and my skill level is very high. And yet, here I am, with 0 viewers.
I was expecting to be on Team Root after MLG DC. They said I am good enough. They put me against Drewbie in what I assumed was tryouts. They didn't expect me to beat him. I did. I haven't heard about joining the team from them since.
Well, I started streaming more than two weeks ago, but only started back up recently since I got a better computer. I remember the first game I streamed. It was me vs IncontroL. I won a macro game by a significant amount. At the end, he typed "gg wp". I had 5 viewers. Most big name players don't even stream. Some people may say that I should be more patient. Two weeks isn't enough time to get my name out there. It hasn't been two weeks. It's been since phase 1 of the beta. I've been playing the whole time, amongst all the big names, amongst all the top ladder players, and yet I am, and have always been, completely unknown.
I look at all these showmatch and invitational tourneys, and I think to myself, "I can beat these people. I've done it before. And yet, I'm not a part of this." I have been in the top 50 in ladder for a long time. I've proven myself to everyone who knows who I am. Unfortunately, that's barely anybody.
I look at all these high-ranked well-known players offering coaching, and wonder why nobody has ever asked me for any help. I ask gosucoaching if there are any spots open, and I don't get a reply.
I look at all these tags of the players I play against: VT, Inflow, ROOT, and others. I wonder why I'm not on any of them. I wonder why I haven't been asked to join any teams, even after convincingly winning against many of each team's members.
I wonder why it's so difficult for me to be known in the community. I play against top players, and then before we can rematch they say they have to play in another tournament or showmatch. They go and present themselves to the community; they show why they are good. I go and ladder, or I go and watch them play, stuck as though I am invisible.
I wish I could be known. I wish I got the attention deserving of my skill. Instead, I am unknown.
I guess I just decided to write this because I'm lost. And so, I'll leave you with a song:
How do you type a whole blog about not having notoriety for your stream and completely fail to link us to said stream? I'll be honest, I have no idea who you are, and after reading this blog, that hasn't changed. What's your ID? Is it the same as your TL ID? or is it Unknown? Do you play tournaments? Beating them in tournaments is different than just thinking, "I can beat these people."
People become popular for a myriad of reasons; you can't expect to be popular just because you're pretty good. For some people, it takes more than that.
Just make a thread and update it everytime you play Also people like streamers that look at replays and talk about strats and stuff so they can learn a little bit from it. If you don't advertise your stream nobody will watch it, cuz they have more known players to watch who are featured. The only non-featured streams I ever watch are like Navi, cuz I know her, and sometimes I watched MrBiter before he was featured.
*edit* Also what brood said is fantastic You can't expect us to know who you are when you wont even tell us
Can you join tournaments? You'll probably kick ass and it will get you recognized like lightning if you're able to consistently win like you've been doing on the ladder THEN people will join your stream, because you'll become well-known as *that guy who won that tournament... and this tournament... and that other tournament... etc.*.
You really have to get your name out there as BroOd said. Put up a link to your stream, and bnet ID. Of course performance in tournaments will get you recognition as well. You shouldn't have to worry about being known if you have the skillset to do so, just gotta get your name out there, because people aren't going to find you in a pool of tens of thousands of players.
This is not how you get a featured stream. Impressive accomplisments but no one really cares who you beat on ladder and if you are almost good enough to be in ROOT. I don't know this blog post just comes off as very arrogant and whiny and it makes me not want to watch your stream.
Oops, sorry I didn't link my stream :/ I didn't want to advertise it. I added that in there, as well as my ID and such. I have played in tournaments. I've gotten far in many tournaments. I'm going to be casted against Gretorp at 8:00 EST today if he shows for the Alertcup Tournament.
@ Foreplay That isn't the goal of what I wrote. I'm simply lost as to how I can become better known. People say "win tournaments" but what tournaments are there to win? Most don't get much viewing, and those that do are usually invitationals.
Okay, this is just sad Maybe it's just not in your cards *ducks before you throw something at me*
Seriously, though, life can be unfair and sometimes you just have to be a "jerk" to get noticed. I read that somewhere. Jerks get more attention than nice guys. Don't know if I'd tell ya to take that route, but I do know that winning tournaments "might" get you recognized.

I think the fact that he didnt link to anything begins to explain the problem.
Dude! Promote yourself more! Make a thread about your stream, make people aware of you through posting replays, promote promote promote! NOONE ELSE WILL DO IT FOR YOU!
My suggestions for easy steps to promote yourself. Keep to only one nick for everything. Bnet, TL, you name it. Make a thread about your stream, with a link to your profile keep it up in the sc2 general by posting when you are streaming Participate in TL Open, any kind of low entrance level tournament and win them! Post replay packs with you playing famous e-people Make a twitter (not really, but you could)
Following this: Go to live events, win them too. Socialize with the other "pros", it seems like a small scene, so getting to be known on the inside is important. Get signed to a team
if it makes you feel any better, i'm a no name who decided to stream some 3v3 and got 50+ viewers
on a more serious note (although it really did happen), there are a variety of other factors when it comes to attracting people on your stream. more often than not (especially now that idra/huk stream frequently) your stream will be overlooked by a bigger name on the featured list. there's also some silly things like self-commentary. i know ryanrushia (sp?) gets a lot of extra viewers simply because he talks to his viewers a lot during the game
On December 15 2010 09:38 LuckyFool wrote: Recognition will come in time. I know everyone in the DC knows you now.
Also it doesn't help that your game name is different from your TL name at the moment. You should get changed to SiN on TL.
I would, but I don't know how to. I don't want to make a new account because I already have had this one for so long.
All you have to do is talk to a mod, I forgot who is in charge of reviewing name changes. It shouldn't be too hard though since you have less than 300 posts. I think it's Hot_Bid that reviews name changes. I could be wrong though.
Thank you guys for your suggestions!! I've been joining more tournaments, and am in the finals for several. I'll change my account name, and advertise my stream more in a non-intrusive manner. I guess I'm too shy.
I dont understand the importance of a couple hundred procrastinating strangers watching you ladder.
In terms of being recognised as one of the best, well sounds like you're headed in the right direction. You shouldnt be disheartened by missing out on these petty ego strokes
i can't speak for anyone but myself, but I have no idea who you are. This isn't meant to be an insult. I don't follow SC2 very much at all. I'll watch a GSL vod of ret here and there. Sometimes i'll watch an interview from Artosis.
So, unless I have met you at a DC LAN or dinner, or I have played with you at a WCG (usually pre-online qualifiers, so 03 - 06ish) I won't know you. This is the same reason I had no idea who huk was or that he got invited to be on team liquid (i've ranted on this a little too much imo).
I know people from BW and the DC dinner crew (shout outs to my nerds!). So I'll know who you are at the next LAN assuming no more dumbasses back into my truck while I'm parked and take off my bumper.
So I'm sorry I don't know you, or remember you if you have come to dinners/lans before the last one that i missed.
So assuming you're not SuGo-X17 (if so, i'd rather keep not knowing you) then introduce yourself to me at the next LAN. I'll be the one dancing to some stupid kpop song (curse you rob and your timing pushes)
You could post this as well instead of your nick and character code, making it easy to access is important. People are lazy. http://sc2ranks.com/us/396451/SiN
Also I`d recommend changing your signature to include: Terran 2.8k, that may pique some interest in the stream
Other things worth experimenting with is Making your streaming thread more visually appealing (Colours, banner, and so on) youtube videos Commentaries Clearly distinguishable music on your stream Having some theme to your stream, as in you doing something special that differentiates you and makes you get featured on TL (trying crazy strats / rage all the time / be awesome / talking with your friends on skype) Talking on your stream, as in giving feedback to chat (when there are more people of course ) Also your stream is really unstable at the moment. It goes off air, on air Giving good advice in the SC2 strategy forum. Long good posts.

It's okay. I'll come to the next one and get 1st this time.
humility is nice, but don't sell yourself short. put 2.8k diamond in your sig, make some posts in the strategy forum, maybe do a show where you help out lower level players? that is how most of our now featured streamers started.
i was pretty self-conscious myself about even putting my music link in my sig, but after hundreds of downloads and comments i could care less. just be smart and not obnoxious about it.
I'll be streaming all of tomorrow, then at about 8 PM EST I'll play Gretorp in the Alertopen cup(or whatever it's called). I thought it was today, but apparently Gretorp had to play Fenix first.
Thank you all for your awesome, quick replies. I will definitely be taking all of your guys' advice, and post my strategies in the forum, and over winter break I'll probably get high definition youtube casts done.
I recognize you from CatZ's stream+the first episode of sup doods. Saw your stream on the list earlier as well, though I didn't make the GoSu] = SiN connection. Like everyone else has said already, just keep it up while being a little more public about yourself.
Also, one of my favorite ways of building a base of fans/getting more known to the community is releasing replay packs! Consider doing that =]
I actually know who you are and have been semi-stalking you on TL and Bnet.
From my first impression at the LAN (whose kid is this?) to your thread on 3 rax and beating Nony (yeah i actually remember that) to your performance in the finals of the Cybergrounds lan.
It's pretty surprising to me that you think you're unknown, I'm pretty sure plenty of people know who you are (at least the DC nerds). Also I'm certain you'll be on a good team very soon (you need to proactively seek out the managers though and pressure them)
I'll be watching your stream tomorrow for sure
Also not sure if you're offering help, but I'd take lessons from you since you're a local

Ur timewarping so hard, Gosu wasn't even BORN back in ur time bro. :DDDD
The whole different TL vs. B.net name might be a factor, don't worry about it - I remember bunches of post in a thread of how people only just now realized that FrozenArbiter was JINRO in one of the fan-threads, haha.
I don't usually watch streams bc my internet is an utter failure, but if I ever see any VODs I'll root for ya, underdogs/non-big names ftw
I've met GoSu] in 1v1 ladder and he was kind enough to send me some reps and talk a bit afterwards. This guy is the real deal and his skill is all there. His learning curve is high and his ceiling for talent even higher. I would easily watch his stream over the vast majority of the other featured streamers out there. The team who picks this guy up is lucky, he's a diamond in the rough right now.

Ughh tell me about it.
Shut up about your ego and how you are better than all these featured streams and stuff. I can't stand arrogant people, nonetheless watching their stream. I'm glad you're only 15 and still growing up, because you come off as very immature ~_~
Grobyc, I can't help but say that your comment shows that your a complete asshole. He's 15 and looking for advice from a community that is older and wiser than any other gaming community out there. Why do you shut him down and discourage him all the while taking a shot at his maturity level?
Instead of keeping to himself and going in circles with his progression, he's simply looking for advice. I've been on TL for years and years now and still I see absolutely disappointing posts from people who should know better.
Even if you think he's not as good as he says, that's great. No one cares about who or what you find arrogant. Give him suggestions how he can better himself, or don't fucking post at all. If he's overrating himself and is another fish in the sea, then nothing will come of it. But that's not for you to decide, especially after seeing a blog post. Grow up and let's see a little more contribution, I shudder to think this is the norm for your 11k posts. Disgusting.
Why have I not heard about you at all? Hmm let me see. I read every day on TL for news and other things in all public sections. Your thread is either not posted or you do not update your thread at all because you don't promote yourself too much even though you want to become more known by the community.
If you just update your streaming thread and answer questions etc then it's going to take a miracle for you not to be recognised. I zap through the different streams every day just to look if there's someone who's decent by looking at their descriptions and few minutes of their gameplay. Most unknown are already bad with macro so I don't watch them. If you really are as good as you claim to be in the OP then advertise yourself more. It doesn't matter if you're featured or not because I've seen some streamers not featured who got few hundred till 700-800 viewers.
I read alot of news here and I'm very up to date with most stuff on TL and yet I'm still thinking who you are lol.
GL with your streaming though and hope you get what you want

I say he needs to stop boasting his ego and comparing himself to other featured streams. Without a doubt, unless he does this there is no chance of becoming a popular streamer. I also say there are people like me who can't stand to watch a stream of someone who is this arrogant. This clearly states he is deterring potential viewers in his current position. I'm not DECIDING for other people to watch or not watch him; I'm saying people who look at it from my point of view, and clearly I'm not the only one according the other posts in this thread, likely won't enjoy watching such a stream.

Now look at yours. You attack me and provide NO feedback to this streamer at all. Quite ironic don't you think? "your a complete asshole" "don't fucking post at all" "Grow up" Don't you also think I would have been banned by now if all my posts were as "disgusting" as my previous?
I simply stated the obvious in a very bold way. I never cussed him out. I never said he was bad. I gave him the hard truth, and if he, or other people, can't handle that, they have some insecurities in my opinion. I'm not going to baby someone, especially after they present themself in this manner.
I'm not going to sit here pick apart your post like you did mine. It can all be summed up pretty nicely. Sometimes it's the follow up posters that need the feedback, not the OP. No ones going to appeal to everyone, how this eludes you is remarkable. He's on my friend list, I do not need to give feedback in a forum thread just for your sake and for you to acknowledge it. I will not be continuing this flame war. We have our opinions on who we believe is immature; you think it's him and I think it's you.
My post was clearly directed towards you and how you treated him, so your continuance on the subject regarding my feedback to him is irrelevant. Now that you've been given a taste of your own medicine and brought down a few notches off your pedestal, you got very defensive. He's not frustrated because he's not a featured streamer, he's frustrated because he's making attempts to get himself started and seeing little return or reward, hence the blog post... Telling him to shut up and to lose the arrogance is really disappointing and lets be honest, you know you could of done better than that.
Edit: To the below poster: I can't help but laugh how your post reinforces the first line in my original post.

Very bold way to give him tips now that I read your previous comment although I do agree that he comes off as arrogant (as I also putted it as nicely as I could after reading his OP) but I just read that he is in fact 15 so I'll shrug it off me since he probably doesn't know how to properly express himself to others if he wants more viewers.

Yep the post come off as arrogant to me too but he's only 15.
Just participate in tournaments more. It doesn't really matter how big or how many viewers are watching the tourney. If you win/get far in a couple of ICCUP/CraftCup/TL Opens, people will notice.
afaik being "featured" has to do with whether people want to watch you as well. I watch a tons of streams and in most of the popular ones the streamer actually interacts with the viewers. Maybe they'll go over the replays aloud or say what they're thinking when they're playing the game or go through the chat to see what the viewers have to say and reply to it (IE "A tech switch to mutas wouldn't work" blah blah blah).
Also if you want to join Root and was given tryouts/etc to do so, maybe you should follow up on it. If you're applying for a job in the real world, you would have to keep in contact with catz or whoever, and follow up on it. I'm not sure if you did this, but you should of shot catz a email/pm/tell and ask him how your application/recruitment process is going and if you can join.
Sorry if I came off as arrogant(It's my first blog). I didn't mean it that way. My goal was to ask for help on how I can become better known. It wasn't meant to be me bragging, or saying that people are ignoring me even though I'm amazing or whatever. If that's how it looked, I'm sorry. I see it more as me not presenting myself properly, not me being ignored.
Also, I'm pretty sure that once stream threads are off of the front page, they can't be bumped. A few people(including me) posted on my stream thread after it was off the front page, and I didn't see it on reappear on the front page.
silly cyrus volward, i doubt you're not appreciated, also i doubt you're at your best yet, then again you're only 15 years old. you can't attend to LAN events otehr than the ones super close by where your brother can take you. sure you have good results vs some people, but you're also very inconsistant at times and that's fine but you can improve upon it, CONGRATS ON TAKING 2ND PLACE AT GOSUCOACHING TOURNAMENT BTW. I know you got the potential to be good, this is why we invited you as an up and commer to SUP DOODS, did we not? at least for ROOT, joining us is not an easy process, we are always looking at multiple players at the very top of their game or with full potential to improve i.e minigun. if you think you're good enough stop being top 50 and make top 10 on the ladder... stop getting 2nd and get 1st. market yourself, bnet is too large to be acknowledged by bragging about who you beat and what not, I mean obv if u got a youtube channel and you post reps of you beating all these top players you'll get famous nomsayin. but posts like this saying how great you are aren't gonna make any of the teams that you seem to aspire to join be anywhat more eager to see you in their lineups.
Its very possible that we're not looking for anyone atm (speaking in behalf of ROOT) but IF we were wanting to fill a spot in the T department, based on how much potential for a guy of your age you have and how good you could become (maybe if you start hotkeying your units for example) you'd be one of the 3-4 terrans on the server that we'd consider, thought i'd just say that, but yes, I think you come as arrogant, I dislike pulling numbers and saying who you beat and whatnot, for example you could mention what your stats vs me the last 10-15 games have been and then answer some questions you have for yourself without having to make a super large post, nomsayin?
A discussion/debate is very different than a flame war. No one here is flaming anyone. I feel is it more efficient to pick apart different parts of a post during a debate than to simply write up a bunch of stuff in summary. So while you feel it may be nit picky, I think it's the proper way to go about an argument. With that said, I will continue to argue my points.
Sometimes it's the follow up posters that need the feedback, not the OP. No ones going to appeal to everyone, how this eludes you is remarkable.
Alright so you feel I need feedback in these matters, and I feel you need feedback. Everyone has their opinion, but this thread was not the place to start such a thing. If you honestly feel I was being "mean" or what have you, you should have notified a moderator to discuss things elsewhere. With that said, if you want to reply, let's take this to PMs; it's starting to clutter the thread. Replying with "I will not be continuing this flame war." is an immature way of saying "I said my part and now I'm not going to acknowledge your counter argument." I'm not saying this warrants a ban, despite the fact that users are constantly banned for saying such things, but it comes off as very childish to me.
He's on my friend list, I do not need to give feedback in a forum thread just for your sake and for you to acknowledge it.
And the fact that he was on your friends list was oh so implied in your original post, right? I don't need you to give him feedback for my sake, feedback in this thread is purely for the sake of Gosu. How you expected me to know you are friends and give him feedback separately is beyond me.
My post was clearly directed towards you and how you treated him, so your continuance on the subject regarding my feedback to him is irrelevant. Now that you've been given a taste of your own medicine and brought down a few notches off your pedestal, you got very defensive.
I'm failing to see how I've "been given a taste of [my] own medicine and brought down a few notches off [my] pedestal". Where in my posts did you get this feeling from? I don't see anything I wrote that makes me come off as defensive more so than anyone else in a standard argument. You defend your position in an argument, am I correct?
He's not frustrated because he's not a featured streamer, he's frustrated because he's making attempts to get himself started and seeing little return or reward, hence the blog post
Recognition comes over time. In the OP there is a comparison of him to featured streamers, easily noted in the first line of that paragraph
I look at those featured, whose skill level is not far from mine, and they have a bare minimum of 300 at any given time
Yes, tell people your accomplishments. Yes, tell us your rank and point ratings, but don't compare yourself to current featured streams. Indirectly, that says "why are these guys featured and not me?"
... Telling him to shut up and to lose the arrogance is really disappointing and lets be honest, you know you could of done better than that.
An arrogant post deserves an arrogant reply sometimes. I already noted that what I said was harsh, but it was the truth, and if I had the chance to go back I would say it again. Everyone needs to learn at some point, whether you are 25 or 15. Your ethics are obviously different than some others. To end your post with that tells me "Let's be honest. My ethics are moral and yours aren't." That's not a point you can argue.
Edit: To the below poster: I can't help but laugh how your post reinforces the first line in my original post.
I'm just overall confused by this. The post below yours agrees that I was bold in what I said (which I clearly recognized in the post before this), and agrees with us who said the OP came off as arrogant. Maybe you need to re-read it, but I was not the only being called arrogant there.

Your stream thread is in the streaming forums where it belongs. If it gets bumped ok and all but it won't appear in the front page if the streaming forums isn't in that section. Unless the webmaster (R1CH?) coded it in such way that it's tied to the starcraft sections in which if u update the thread it get's bumped and appears in the starcraft sections.
Just keep it up GoSu], your slowly getting more recognition. I watched your stream for a while yesterday, and was impressed by your play.
Grobyc, you cannot pick apart lines from my post, put your own version on them with an added twist, put them quotations and then say I said the same thing. This is not referencing. This is you being in your own little world where you misinterpret things. I will not elaborate, I have given you more than your worth of my time.
"I will not be continuing this flame war" and "I said my part and now I'm not going to acknowledge your counter argument" are not the same thing. Nor is "lets be honest, you know you could of done better than that" the same as "Let's be honest. My ethics are moral and yours aren't." So cut that out, it's not how you reference somebody. I can see a lot of what I said to try and help the quality of your posts improve went over your head, hence your giant mess of a reply with terrible referencing and confusion stricken mini-paragraphs which you halfheartedly admit. Since this confusion I take it is almost guaranteed (2 for 2 now) I will do it your way to help as best I can to avoid such daunting logic to fail again:

If you want to take it to PMs, then take it to PMs. Instead of posting it why not just do it? There you go with your abysmal attempt at referencing me. I sincerely hope you never write any type of sourcing material. I'm not saying your post warranted a ban either, that's why I didn't take it to a moderator. But I believe you know full well it could of used a major boost in quality, even though you don't admit it with what I assume is overflowing pride.
And the fact that he was on your friends list was oh so implied in your original post, right? I don't need you to give him feedback for my sake, feedback in this thread is purely for the sake of Gosu. How you expected me to know you are friends and give him feedback separately is beyond me.
I don't know if I can facepalm harder from reading this. You completely missed the point. Your brilliant for not finding where I implied that we were friends in my original post. I hope you didn't waste too much time doing so. Do you see where I expected you to know? Neither do I.
Recognition comes over time. In the OP there is a comparison of him to featured streamers, easily noted in the first line of that paragraph
Obvious statement is obvious. I don't think we need to plot recognition on the y-axis and time on the x-axis. Let's not recite what we already know. I did however, acknowledge that this is the first time you've properly referenced something without the added Grobyc twist.
You are correct. However, I can see from your (now third) post that you don't and won't understand, hence the failure to see where it stems from. I expect your follow up to be the same. I guess my sentence about the pedestal was a bit harsh, but I was merely inferring that if you dish some out, be ready to be able to take some in. In your case, you dished out in the most useless of ways, which brings me to my next point...
An arrogant post deserves an arrogant reply sometimes. I already noted that what I said was harsh, but it was the truth, and if I had the chance to go back I would say it again. I'm sorry King Grobyc, I didn't mean to go against the almighty bible of arguing that you have so conveniently written. It's not a point I can argue, it's my opinion on your post. Again, lose the atrocious attempt at the cross reference, it's not happening. Everyone does need to learn at some point, and I'm glad you think your the one to do so. It's good to be confident in yourself, but maybe that has to do with the pedestal sentence perhaps? Eureka, I've invented the cure for confusion.
I'm just overall confused by this...Maybe you need to re-read it
No. I'm not the one confused, you are. I cannot re-read something to alleviate your confusion. Unfortunately I cannot read a book to myself and ask you to give me a summary of the story. Oh how easy teachers would have it if life worked that way. I will demonstrate my cure once more however:
Edit: To the below poster: I can't help but laugh how your post reinforces the first line in my original post.
...but I just read that he is in fact 15 so I'll shrug it off me since he probably doesn't know how...
Grobyc, I can't help but say that your comment shows that your a complete asshole. He's 15 and...
I'm off to get this patented. *Sigh* Will I be expecting a PM?
@Horrde Ah I understand your post now. You meant the first post in this thread you made instead of your original post in which you commented at me.
Yes I do agree with you there and it does share the same view. So basically you are also saying he comes off as arrogant but he is only 15 years old so his maturity compared to the majority of TL is lower because of his age and experience so we all should just try and teach him how to express himself mannerfull to others which seems to be the case in his latest replies in this blog so my opinion has already changed about him.
I think I was confused just like Grobyc about that part because it wasn't really stated or atleast implied anywhere in that post (the one you said @below post) that my post was reinforcing yours.
