Just a heads up, blizzard tried to make realid for korean purposes. Korean law requires real ID when posting in forums.

lol

Trying to attract the Koreans to the Blizzard forums? Don't know how that would work out!

Otherwise, I think that strict moderation has always been a cornerstone to any good forum, especially one that's popular like TL. The problem is that when you have an even bigger community in terms of Blizzard, that has players from WoW, WCIII, and SC, it becomes infinitely harder to manage such a large community.

I think the blame definitely goes to poor moderation, but you also have to consider how much spam a human can handle before calling it a night.

Until they realise that foreigners are using KSSN generators and proxies. Real ID is a joke.

Korean law does not apply to the following countries:
  • Canada
  • United States
  • France
  • Itality
  • Germany
  • Russia
  • Country which is not called Korea

Errr umm. Blizzard does have moderators, the problem is that we (the trolls) have unlimited keys and accounts (not on the new forums unfortunately).

There's no point in comparing the forums because they provide two different things.

If I want to post something trollish, silly or just anything random I want, I will post on Bnet forums, or bodybuilding.com forums, or somewhere else.

If I want to post about Starcraft, or have semi-intelligent discussion, I will post here. I see no reason why the forums need to overlap and all be the same. What's wrong with the bnet forums NOT being TeamLiquid? I mean is there really that much to talk about Starcraft on the Bnet forums? Are we going to talk about the campaign levels dozens of times and have the same discussions on the same things day in and day out? If you want a level of moderation and discussion between the bnet forums and TeamLiquid there are lots of quality sites:

GosuGamers
GameFaqs
NeoGaf

Bnet forums have a charm that I like.

That's actually pretty convincing. B.net provides for random shit that you can't get away with here....and TL lets you talk to people that have more than half a brain without being drowned by spam....

Cool.

You summed up your point pretty accurately in the end of the video, lol. I never visit bnet or bnet forums so obviously i dont care at all. For me, bnet forums have always been a shithole and will continue to be so. I have TL.net and thats all i need

I wasn't aware of the fact that Korean law required real ID. I find that very crazy. Korea is crazy-- but then again-- it explains why my Korean friend, who is a full grown man, was reduced to tears when the government tried to deport him back to Korea. ** He is still here with us, if you're wondering.

But like TossFloss wrote-- its silly to apply them to every other person in the world. I actually LOL'd at his post.

I have to say that as a first time viewer, I was very impressed with the video and I think you express your ideas rather clearly. I was entertained, and really enjoyed watching it.

Pineapple dumptruck!

Anyways on topic, I think some of your points are very legit. On one end of the spectrum, you've got Blizzard forums and on the other end you have Teamliquid forums. Very minimal moderation to Very strict moderation. However, from my perspective, as the community grows, the tight moderation only serves to help the community better. As you said and you've learned from, pointless +1 posts and dumb image macros are disallowed simply because they don't add anything to the conversation.

If TL were loosely moderated like BNet forums, god knows what it would turn into. Might be another recreation of 4chan. But at the same time, tight moderation on TL can possibly discourage some posters from posting. As you said, some posters might be very timid, very shy, and feel like it's too hard to post here without making a mistake or two.

From my point of view, I think while TL is doing a great job of moderation, I fear that some newcomers might find it hard to post here simply because of the intimidation factor. Newbie mistakes aren't really tolerated here, but for some kids, they really just might be some newbie who's trying to find something out here on TL only to get shut down immediately.

yay mike heres your favorite comment-poster from utube ...

well the biggest problem of the blizzard bnet forums is that its actually a company. And a company need to hire people to moderate and do stuff. And also they have a redonculous amount of forum members...

Here comes in the huge advantage of community driven sites and forums... they can easily pick volunteers or other people they maybe partly know from real life and say "hey if you spare some free time you can make our forums a bit better and stuff"

so theres my part on this seeyaaa dudes

I don't think this is a huge issue. Any smart newcomer to a forum will lurk the forum. After lurking for a little while, it isn't that hard to make a post. Its not like you have to have perfect grammar or formatting, you just need to not be dumb and provide evidence if you have a claim.

If you never lurked the site, sure, you should be scared to post and you shouldn't anyway unless it is a simple reply. And those noobs who do get shot down deserve to because they probably didn't search or make a quality post.

Personally, I think they need to lay down an iron fist on the SC2 forums. I see too many threads without replay evidence. Replay evidence is key and it not that difficult to do. You normally experienced something in game to warrant a thread anyway, so you could just save a replay and upload it. It isn't difficult, but people are really eager to post and too lazy for replays. That should be punished.

About the vlog: Yeah, Blizzard forums suck and need moderation. But they have a HUGE userbase and they need to pay moderators. It isn't much to ask because I'm sure Blizzard is swimming in cash, but they're too money hungry so they won't. It sucks, but what can you do?

I can't watch that with the jumping, so I just listened to it. I liked the content, however, I think there needs to be a place for spam. For every TL there needs to be a bnet or ggnet so people who get banned from the good society have somewhere to go and associate with their kind. Some forums are needed to just let people thoerycraft to their hearts content and have people go, "yeah! good idea, I'm gonna try that on ladder."

@count9

The more I listen to posts like yours, and the rest of the TL members. The more I agree with you.

It is hard to assume that everyone who plays Starcraft has something useful to say in the first place. I appreciate the moderators in this forum. I am glad to have found it after so many years of playing Broodwar.

However-- I do believe that as a major company, and gaming benchmark Blizzard needs to control the way their forum is run. I logged on the other day, and found 82 threads by the same poster, all with the same title.

It turns the forum where people can theory craft, and hang out-- and be newbs.. into a place where spam, and douche-baggery brings down the overall appeal of getting to know your fellow players.

Even an older, more mature player who is new to Starcraft will goto these forums first in search of companionship within the game.. and I think the bar needs to be raised. Even to just an acceptable level for the overall expereience to be enjoyable overall.

Thanks for the feedback, and the comments.. I do really appreciate it. <3

dude, just because someone theorized it doesn't make it true!

btw, this logic doesn't even make sense. north americans don't live in korea. debunked. the end.

I can't imagine how paying customers could ever be reconciled with our style of moderation. The reason tl is so good is because people can't come here with a sense of entitlement, this community is what we make it. All the tools made available to everyone, awesome stuff like liquipedia and the news and all the topics explaining everything, happens because people make it happen.
When you get that for free then you treat it with humility and you too want to be a part of it.
When you pay for it you treat it as a right and want to shit on it.

Still, welcome to the community, enjoy your stay.

I enjoyed the video, and not just because of my fancy new icon.

I actually lurked for a while before joining, and even then, I felt really nervous when I was making my first post. I've been a part of other big forums, but I really respected this community so I didn't make posts unless I was confident about what I was saying and just tried to make sure there was some content.

Things definitely lighten up as you become a vet, though.

Im sure Blizzard realizes how big a market korea is, and it would be smart of them to keep in line with korea's laws as long as it doesnt dramatically hinder the interaction with other countries, which it doesnt. would be terribly stupid for them to completely kill half their markets ability to post in their forums.. just making it more comfortable for everyone i suppose

plus everyone knows anonymity sucks ass.

Well we already know how they had to reduce the gore in the game for the Korean market. Starcraft is a religion in Korea.

@ Gene

I see how they might want to make the game fall in line with all of their existing rules to stream line its acceptance in the foreign market. But its foolish to think the rest of the world is just going to comply to something as controversial as Real IDs.

@Jibba

TeamLiquid forums are great, and the more I post here, and read through the different threads, even the off topic, and general forums. The members aside from light flaming here and there, are very much stand up people.

The Koreans can keep their rules. Blizzard can keep their shitty forum. And hopefully TeamLiquid sticks around for another billion years.

A forum I used to visit had the best moderation I've ever seen... and it was 10x as harsh there. Posts that either weren't on topic or funny were deleted. A couple of repeats and the user is banned. Had bad typing or English skills weren't up to snuff? Banned (obviously on a more multi-cultural site as this I wouldn't encourage or expect that).

Obviously this made it as intimidating as hell for newcomers but it also weeded out the vast majority of people who couldn't hack it. In real life people learn to shut up (usually) and let their betters talk. On the internet, this quickly falls through and people instead feel their opinions are relevant or needed in the discussion. This leads to tens or hundreds of people basically wanting to hear their own voice (or read their own text in this case) instead of actually encouraging proper discussion or discourse on any number of topics. I could rant about this for hours given the time I've spent on too many forums.
