Competition has always been something embedded in my DNA. From the very first time I laid my hands on an Atari 64, I remember that I had to be the best at what I do. Being the best among 5 kids (my brother and 4 friends) wasn't really demanding by any stretch. But it was special.

The first time we loaded up a screen to the final score. I loved etching my name and going ha ha you lose. It was never you suck, but always you lose.

The elitest feeling of superiority.

Fast forward 20 odd years. Those friends, some married, and my brother are doing their own thing. They have very strong skill sets to boast of while I'm still searching. The competitive spirit hasn't died. Yet. But what has this amounted to? The need to play the game to have fun and win?

People didn't understand the burst of competition. People don't get why a 27 year old is spending his one sat night and sunday morning playing a computer game. How about getting a girl banging her up, getting sloshed till you are banged up.

I mean dude, isn't that computer game for fucking kids?
No it's not asshole.

30,000 of my friends at TL would disagree. Starcraft 2 is strategy in its purity. I often wonder where this is going to take me. I had won the national levels at Quake 3. That didn't amount to much to anyone else. To me that gold medal is something I still cherish. Kinda like Day[9]'s medal which symobilized 4 years of hard work.

I'm content playing. Because it struck me, that it takes a gamer to know a gamer. When I learn how to get better at the game. When I learn that keeping my macro and recon are important aspects of RTS. When flanking was first introduced to me. I went from Ah I'm fucked to Ah Hah what depth.

There was a thrill in learning something new. Not a hotkey to press but a strategy to push. A structured mindset. An efficient way of thinking.

From ah to ah hah! The reason gaming is so much fun.

I completely agree, and I get the same feeling. There's some people who give weird looks and question it, but I just ignore them. Do what you love; haters gonna hate.

I could bet anything on people five hundred years ago giving weird looks to people who spent their time playing Chess rather than waste their gold pieces or whatever in the local tavern.

I agree so much, it also sucks none of my friends share this spirit, they only wanna play to have fun and as soon as I start beating them they move to another game because "it's not fun anymore".

First it was CS 1.6, then WoW (pvp and pve), then Starcraft (they quit quickly after a 2-3 months), then other games I picked up together with them like Smash. Right now we're playing HoN which probably won't end up like this cuz for once we're on the same team. I know this comes out like bragging but the reason I mostly beat them is not because I'm better I just put in more effort because I WANT to win.

I wish I had more competative friends.

I feel the same way I discouraged most of my friends away from starcraft, now I just don't play with them and they've kindof started to pick it back up and play a little, but completely exclusive of me
but really, has anyone REALLY been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

I think alot of it has to do with video games not being seen as a legit competative ground, alot people just consider it being a video game.

I share same stories, I don't really have the same intensity to win as you OP but I still enjoy it, my friends however don't or they're more prone to casual experiences. Oh well what can you do right? Good thing about our time is internet can easily bring likeminded people together, exactly like TL.

You can be competitive in other aspects of life, whether it be sports, academic, work or your social life. The drive to want to be better at someone at something doesn't have to be isolated to video games. I still maintain the same competitive attitude and edge I had in my gaming days, I merely just concentrate that energy into other things.

I implore you to put the same amount of effort into something productive or creative you'll be much more fulfilled for it.

Thanks I do keep that in mind. Nothing gets me going like gaming though!
