So uh... My computer went kapoot And no, not because of porn.
So I was browsing softpedia for a while and I found this cool program called the "vistamizer." Apparently it allows your XP OS look like a Vista interface and since I used XP for 913048328949032 years I decided to try it out
I downloaded it and started the installation. During the installation process I decided it was time for a smoke, so I left the room and headed outside to smoke my sweet little Mild Seven.
As I got halfway through the cig I realized something that I should've never forgotten....
I had edited my utheme.dll file so I can use thaat craaaaaazy Royal Noir Theme! And before the installation started I forgot to revert the edited utheme.dll file to the old one
In full panic mode, I dropped my cig and ran as fast as possible back to my room, only to see that the installation has finished and the computer started rebooting itself. As the rebooting process started I prayed to god hoping that my computer is safe...
But then i was greeted with something I really didn't want to see in my life ever again.
A blue screen of death. Man I thought those things disappeared or something but fuck it came back
After 4 seconds of the blue screen, my computer resets itself and it comes back to the blue screen.
I tried doing this in ever mode; safe mode, debug mode cmd promt mode etc etc and none of them work. Hell I can't even get passed the loading screen
Can't you still figure out where that "Royal Noir Theme".dll file is and replace it with the normal .dll file? Do you have an internal hard drive reader or have another computer to connect your troubled hard drive to? If you can answer yes to these questions just try to replace the file this way and see if it helps.
Try getting into safe mode(F8 repeatedly) if you can get into safe mode(any of them) you may be able to reverse/uninstall/replace the files you need. Otherwise like meeple said your only other real option is a repair/complete reinstallation. That or buying a new computer =p, but thats wasteful.
Take a picture (no not screenshot you silly man) of the bluescreen error message, try googling it. If you are lucky there'll be a way to fix it from the recovery console without having to reformat.
If you have another hard drive or another computer, make this drive a slave or just attach it with an additional SATA cable and plug the file you need back into your old main drive.
Since you just need your XP CD to access the recovery console, and in case you can't find your XP CD, Microsoft provides files for setup disks that include the recovery console, which you can find here, where you can find a link for a CD image of the SP3 setup disk. Unfortunately, if you have a version of XP earlier than SP3 the files are only available as floppy images. Even if you do have a floppy drive, it's much more convenient to use this software package to create an image on a CD (just follow the instructions in the readme; it's very simple).
yea boot from disc, if not possible. Go into bios and change your main drive to the slave and your slave drive to master and reinstall windows on that drive (assuming you have two - and switch the cables and jumpers around on the hardware too ofc). Then when you get on go into the other drive and try and remove the previous bad files.
If you have a second computer, laptop or anything. It's pretty easy to DL a XP iso and burn it to a disk. Most computers these days come standard with CD/DVD burners.
