I made a bet with a friend this weekend on who can gain more weight through working out, with the loser treating the winner out to a dinner at the destination of the winner's choosing.

We all agreed that tomorrow would be the start date and the end date would be the next time we see each other (which would be sometime during winter break or about 1.5 months from now).

Me:
Height - ~5'8"
Weight - ~116 lbs

Opponent:
Height - ~5'7"?
Weight - ~135 lbs

My resources:
Money (I'm assuming the only thing I need to buy is protein powder though)
College gym (plenty of equipment)
Pool (Not sure how this could be useful though)
Bike (I bike every day to and from school, not sure about this either)

I'm pretty inexperienced in working out with weights, with my only experience being in Track season and pre-season. So, I was wondering if there's any tips or suggestions for gaining muscle mass quickly in the time-frame (~1.5 months). I think my friend used to work out quite regularly before so I can use all the help I can get.

Train hard, 8-12 rep range, 3-4 sets.
Eat like a fucking monster. Look on the forum I linked above for good bulking foods.

It's reaaally easy to gain mass if you just train hard and eat right.

if you want to gain weight, do heavier weights for lower reps. that gives your muscles more bulk and strength but less endurance.

also, squat and work out th biggest muscles in your body, like your quads and chest. its about weight gain, not so much a sexy body lol.

Eat a fuck ton. You should be able to find all you need from shallow's links, but remember that unless your body is getting enough nutrients to rebuild your muscles and more then working out isn't going to help you gain weight.

You don't want to go toooooo low, like in the 1-5 rep range, because a large part of that training works your nervous system and, while you'll still gain mass, you're mostly going to increase your strength. 6-12 is generally accepted, most bodybuilders, who are all about gaining mass, do 10-12 reps from what I've read.

A valid point is raised that I forgot to mention: compound lifts. Don't do fucking bicep curls or calf raises.

Squat, Deadlift, Bench Press, Chin-up/Pull-up, Military Press...these all target multiple muscle groups and promote muuuch quicker mass gain. You can look them up online if you're unsure of proper technique.

Wow, your pretty thin (no offense). If I was you I'd buy a blender and make protein (ice cream plus milk plus protein powder) milkshakes all day. Coupled with a serious weight lighting regiment, I would surround myself with a ton of bulky foods and just eat frequently and implusively.

I apologize if what I typed previously was misinterpreted, 1-5 reps is fucking retarded.

I think 6-8reps would still be better for pure weight gain, sine that is the challenge at hand. And definitely do compound lifts; only one I don't recommend is military press. Try a standing military press. It is where you press the free weights straight up, so it is a military press (standing up) that works out the upper back as well.

Goodluck, and post naked pictures of your body!

All I ever do are standing military presses, I forgot that the seated variety exists :p

Deefinitely truth in what you say, standing works so many stabilizers and other muscles that the support from being seated doesn't.

Haha, we specified working out to gain weight since neither of us want to be unhealthily gaining weight.

Btw, thanks to everyone who posted helpful replies. I definitely have to change my diet and start working out hard.

Do it. I didn't check my weight while doing this while I was still at university, but when I finally got around to checking my weight, I found that I had gained 20 pounds, probably all/mostly muscle, since I didn't expand my gut size by a factor of 10000. I didn't even manage to consistently finish a gallon/day.

It's probably worth mentioning that spoons of peanut butter might be good to down with the milk, since a gallon of milk a day means drinking upwards of 16 oz of milk at a time (you might just get sick of it.)

Douse your meats in a bit of olive oil. White rice is delicious. Eat 16 oz of oatmeal with like 10000 eggs for breakfast.

With the gallon of milk a day, you may not even need to buy the protein powder, but if you choose to do so, you probably only need enough for pre/post workout shake, but nothing more.

anything higher than 1 percent milk in large doses destroys my insides.

i have difficulty drinking half a gallon of skim milk on workout days -- so i'm just giving up on that.

Lactase is cheap. I have some trouble drinking over a half-gallon a day even with mass lactase-supplementation, just because it's JUST A LOT OF MILK, but the lactose digestion will not be an issue at all if you supplement with this (no more gas/bloating/death.)

Oh, and also, get your metabolism roaring. Try to eat every 1.5 hours or 3 hours a day, and each meal needs protein. You want lunch to be your heaviest meal, and try not to eat carbs or dairy after 1pm.

You don't want to get jiggly, now do you?

You'll be super-sexy with rippling muscles and the body will use the protein better. I think.

there is no reason, i've never even heard that claim before.

if your destroying yourself in the gym everyday, you can't just stock up on stuff in the morning for that.

i eat food all the way until 3 in the morning before I go to bed. no problems here.

This is very specific and individualized advice. This type of thing probably only applies to specific people.

There's no reason why carbs at a certain time would be better or worse than carbs at another time.

Same goes for dairy. Why at some times but not others? If you're an ectomorph who has to work verrry hard to gain a lot of weight, whole milk throughout the day isn't going to make you fat. Getting fat is a gradual process, just like getting lean/muscular. If you're getting fat, adjust your diet.

Dairy products (like whole milk) contain both carbs and fat. Some people prefer not to have both in the same meal, but some people are so underweight/have such high metabolisms, that it doesn't matter for the first few months (or even years) of training. I'm still chugging this stuff. o_O
