I feel like this has happene before to other TL users. Well I was hanging out with a family friend of mine in Paris and we were walking around somewhere (Im not even too sure where it was...) ... needless to say, it was kind of cold so I gave my jacket to my friend (because Im a super nice gentelman). Anyways I was a dumbass and I had stuff in my jacket pockets.
Some African guy runs up and takes the jacket from my friends shoulders and runs off. He must have been Usain Bolts cousin or something. Needless to say, GG drivers lisence, credit card, dads credit card (ruh roh Im dead), bank card, hotel card, phone card, and money. Most importantly though, I lost my notebook in which I had written over 40 pages of poems since I got to France.
Lesson learned: dont leave stuff in jacket pockets, and dont give your jackets to girls. Lol.
Luckily, her dad owns a market and gave me enough food to last me a day and my dad Western Uniond me money. But ya.
FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK. End of story.

it sucks because it was the only day that I didnt keep my stuff in my direct pockets (ie my front shirt pocket is where i usually kept my notebook)... bad timing for the lose. plus it was a 250 jacket. I mainly care about the poems tho.
Ah well, I went to the modern art museum with my cousin and I wrote for about 10 hours yesterday.

When I went to France I found it quite intimidating seeing 20+ black youths standing in a group. Then I saw they were all eating breadsticks and laughed.

"from what I hear" isn't really a reliable source, mostly because no one says "I was walking down the street one day, and I didn't get robed", ie the evidence bias that comes from people more likely to remember robbery than the lack of it.
Also, as a European, some guy have only tried to mug me once, 3 guys on the train nearly stole my calculator, so I don't think that really counts as a mugging/theft/robbery/whatever.

My parents recently traveled to Italy. My father had just come off surgery for his right foot, and one evening while walking alone in Venice he was accosted by two thieves who made off with his wallet. On one foot he followed them, crying Police, Polizia at every breath. The thief ended up pulling the cash out of his wallet and tossing the rest into the air to slow my hobbled father from pursuing him.

However it is not normal, that's why you see such topics and no "hi, I haven't been robbed, bye" topics.
TBH in every major city you really should be aware of pickpocketers, especially when you look like tourist - because this implies you are do have money/camera/anything with you and that you're unfamiliar with city...
P.S. I'm 23 years old, study in Gdańsk (aka Danzig) - one of major Polish cities and have never been robbed, plus almost every year i visit my friends in UK and nobody robbed me, neither my friends there, so heres example if you want to find single person from Europe who didn't have this problem.
|
Well Paris is still safer than Port Moresby. I guess you run the chance of getting robbed in most larger cities in europe. Especially those with alot of newly arrived immigrants. Poverty brings that out in people I guess.
|

Well if you want to be specific, they attempted to mug me, but they failed and not in a Kennigit, "I nearly killed the mugger" way but in a, "I had nothing valuable on me, so they gave up" way.
Also I wanted to say that it was an attempted mugging, but I was struggling with the wording at the time, because as we all know, all Europeans are inbred retards.
To keep you happy, I'l change it.

Big cities = tourists + lot of poor people and/or thugs ---> you can get robbed.
I highly doubt it is better in the big American cities.
|
Shit, that sucks.
My dad was on a work trip to Spain and he got his laptop bag robbed... it was too heavy for the thief so while he was being chased, he threw it on the ground and ran away. Fail.
You're right, it happens in very crowded places popular with tourists.
|
Summer and big cities are always dangerous, i travel a lot but still it never happend to me that i get robbed, but i never bring all i have when i walk arround, as a tourist i would be carefull to sit in park with notebook or iphone :D. I am sry that happend to you Xeris.
But it´s really funny how all the US guys here pretand that the United States are so more save then Europe

on topic: that sucks happens quite a lot in Paris depending on the sectors thankfully since I'm french/canadian and often very loud when I go there they're scared as fuck as to even approach me lololol
|
Actually, it never happened to me but I guess they target tourists very well.
I don't think France is such a safe place, you won't get killed in a gunfight here, but if you're a tourist, your money ain't safe. Also, people are taking as much from tourists as they can. If they notice you have no clue about french, the bills won't be the same...
When I come back from work, I use the metro line that runs past the Eiffel tower, very crowded with tourists. Every day I see backpacks open, cameras / ipods in an open purse etc.
I guess it's a big temptation for all the african / "eastern european" people coming to Paris to make cash.

I'm not a violent person, but if you calculate your honor and lost things against the value of your life, in certain situations it can be worth it. To count on the police to get your things back from pickpockets is just plain stupid. Also, I wasn't being a dick, I just stated that you come off as a coward. Be more self conscious and stand for it instead of making lame jokes and trying to act defensive, unrelated to this story.
That last remark, haha? If someone steals something very precious to you, I believe being embarassed is last thing you'd worry about.

Trust me you wouldn't get hurt in paris especially near the Seine St Denis. To the op, suck to be you, but paris and tourist places are really common to pickpockets. I always keep my passport, money, cards etc in a neckpouch under my shirt. For added unexpectedness I wear it backwards, so the pouch is between my back and my shirt (no visible lump, fits nicely in the small of my back). To do anything else when travelling is asking for it^H^H^H^H^H not doing all you can to protect yourself, especially in a city where snatch and grabs are endemic.
I don't mean this like "haha you moron", just some advice for next time, or for anyone else planning on travelling. Whenever the local french teacher takes a group of students over there, at leat one of them loses a wallet. Hide that shit.

FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK. End of story.
I was in Paris two weeks ago and was having a ridiculously overpriced Bulmer's cider in a pub, when all of a sudden from a table not far away from me, a black guy jumps up, grabs a cell phone/ipod or similar and runs like Bolt down the street (it was at Grands Boulevard). Then the apparent owner this said device tried to catch him but he had to return without anything at all because the guy was so fast.
This all happened in a mere second and it seemed to me that these gents were actually sitting at the same table for a while having a chat, so I was really confused after this incident. o_O
Lesson: be extra cautious with your valuables in Paris (and don't talk to the Romanian women asking you if you spoke English^^)!
