Ya, pretty much any anime I know would've had more philosophical depth in it.

Seriously. Naruto. Good lord there are SOOOO many great animes that target philosophical subjects. But an anime with >200 episodes? Bad choice. AM I THE ONLY ONE NOTICING SOMETHING HORRENDOUSLY WRONG HERE? Anime has become quite an important part of Japanse culture over the years. It's certainly a subject with lots of depth to it. However, an anime like Naruto (or Sailormoon, or Dragon Ball, or One Piece, or Detective Conan, all the stuff that runs forever) is usually just simple and mindless entertainment.

I mean Paprika or Ghost in the Shell have fun subject matter for philosophically oriented critique but neither really deserve a whole class, and maybe this is just the elitist in me talking but I don't feel they deserve to really be taken seriously as philosophy. I can't think of better examples of philosophy in anime. You can't? How about Boogiepop Phantom? Texhnolyze? Lain? Casshern Sins? Kaiba? Noir? To name a few examples...

Even if they are better than Naruto, they are just animes. If you want to learn philosophy read the ancient greek philosophers and Nietzsche. I could understand if it was some "art" class but philosophy ? Come on... LOL

Animes, films and dramas are work of fiction, for entairtainment. How can you make a comparison with Philosophy books ? At best animes are regurgitating some cliché philosophical concepts ( often misunderstood ). Read the original authors.

Words are just a form of communication and in the end it comes down to it that you, yourself have to think about something. When you read a book and don't think, it's just empty words. The words can be replaced by something like a story+animation etc because the way doesn't matter. It's less blunt than having the words thrown into your face but it still works. The question is whether you actually have the right mind and can do something like this. Hm, my english is pretty bad but I hope you understand what I want to say
