Yea i understand what you mean, but philosophy books are not fictions. It is highly theoretical and extremely hard to understand. I mean people are still arguing about the interpretation of some concepts developed by Nietzsche ( just one example ). You need to have a pretty good understanding of the material to make an anime dealing with that kind of concepts and even if it is done properly the result will be boring and incomprehensible for the "casual" viewer.

And since they are watching pretty bad animes you will end up with stupid questions like:
Is Naruto a modern übermench ? etc...

They should have made an "Japan culture and animes" course instead. It would be way more interesting and credible.

A book is made out of a person's thoughts and in the same way a medium like an anime can be created. "It is highly theoretical" <--that's what I said with "words in your face". Of course it is hard to understand what a person thought but with such books, you are kinda tied down. An anime instead can be(how do they say it?) "thought-provoking", leaving you with concepts etc but you have to think for youself(that's why I said you need the right mind/ability to do so). That gives you freedom which I, myself, prefer.
And the class has a teacher which makes up for the lack of a guideline which is good for the in-philosophy-interested people(casual ones shouldn't join that course anyway).
(In this case the teacher is probably useless but we were talking about the theory anyway.)

Well, I'm going to bed. It's already deep into the night and I'm really, really tired.

Definitely should of at least had an anime like Texhnolyze or Monster, would be really interesting but this is a joke...

Also they're not just "better" than Naruto, it's a whole different thing.

Ostensible syllabus materials in no particular order or designation with high potential for cross-pollination in terms of philosophies named per anime for an Anime and Philosophy (Western, continental) course that would not totally suck in terms of the anime chosen or the philosophy involved and that as an anti-bird course would be proper slacker suppressant:

- Serial Experiments Lain + Guy Debord, Jean Baudrillard
- Neon Genesis Evangelion + Jean-Paul Sartre, psychoanalysis (Freud, Jung, Bataille, Lacan)
- Death Note + Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche, Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment
- Azumanga Daioh + Simone de Beauvoir or some survey of American second wave feminism
- Revolutionary Girl Utena + Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Eve Segwick
- Ghost in the Shell + Rene Descartes, Baruch Spinoza, Bertrand Russell
- FLCL + Michel de Montaigne (selected essays), Jacques Derrida's critique of Rousseau in Of Grammatology

I haven't seen Cowboy Bebop or Monster, but I imagine they'd work too.
