Don Van Vliet (Cpt.Beefhart) Died due to complications with multiple sclerosis last night. He was my Idol in music and held a special place for me personally as a man. I am sad. As anyone else lost an idol?
Rolling stone magazine says the following,
"Don Van Vliet was a complex and influential figure in the visual and performing arts," the gallery said in a statement. "He is perhaps best known as the incomparable Captain Beefheart who, together with his Magic Band, rose to prominence in the 1960s with a totally unique style of blues-inspired, experimental rock & roll. This would ultimately secure Van Vliet's place in music history as one of the most original recording artists of his time. After two decades in the spotlight as an avant-garde composer and performer, Van Vliet retired from performing to devote himself wholeheartedly to painting and drawing. Like his music, Van Vliet's lush paintings are the product of a truly rare and unique vision."
Hes survived by his wife of 40 years.
RIP Captain Beefhart
We loved you.

I'm really choked up about his death, and I never thought it would happen. I have high standards when it comes to music and people, and there's no doubt in my mind the man was a genius. It's difficult to find the right words to express how I feel, as I don't often feel bad hearing news. Somehow, through listening to the various stories and songs over the years, I felt like I had become part of his strange vision. It doesn't make sense, really, but there's a void now where there ought not to be one.

An extremely talented guy. I'm a huge Zappa fan, so I first started to appreciate him though their collaborations. Now that he's gone it sort of feels like that chapter in music history is over. Sort of like what will happen to the Beatles once McCartney dies.

I've always wanted to check out Cpt Beefheart since I'm a huge Frank Zappa fan but never really got around to it. RIP

it is a sad day indeed R.I.P

I'll just add to the general bummedoutness over the death of the Captain.
Apparently his illness meant he wasn't able to paint in his last few years, which was probably hell for him.

this post has given me a faith in TL. I listened to Bongo Fury at least 100 times its one of my favorite Zappa albums and its cause the Captain is in there. He was a True rocker. A real Rock and Roller and also a heavy bluesman. Its been quite sad, as I know that he was a very special kind of genius in music and he broadend the horizons of music and that kind of artists/musitian doesnt come very often. Hell he was one of a kind! RIP Captain Beefheart

"A squid in a polyethylene bag is fast bulbous, got me?"
I've got the fondest memories of walking alongside the Thames in London and seeing some sand sculptors down on the banks making a giant squid for change while singing that song.
He will be sorely missed.

It seem retarded but this is the best tribute i can give too Cpt.beefhart for TL. I played under his name in 2006 if i won a game it would of been nice but still... I loved the guy and i wanted you to know.
I still use his name to play even now and i get the odd "fasten bulbous" comment which makes me smile. maybe now I'll sad face it when I hear it but II'll try too remember the man not the moment of sadness that was his passing. Thanks TL it's nice to feel completely understood.
