doesn't work like that iirc, the steam code is ONLY for a new account. My friend was bitching to this effect recently as he had a steam code he tried putting on a trial.

Yes you can do that, as the CCP site asks for a steam cd key as method for payment of your first month, so you can 21 day + $5 1st month. Every month after that though... not so much.

According to Steam, "Product keys will not work with existing EVE Online accounts."

Just bought the game on Steam and got the message that this could not be added to an existing account. So after much deliberation and searching I decided I may as well bite the bullet and just start anew, this is after trying the code Steam gives you as authentication of you purchase as a time and CD code.
So I went to proprieties is Steam and went to create a new EVE account when I saw my URL
https://secure.eveonline.com/activation/?cdkey=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Obviously I won't post the legit key, but this pops up for a bit when the page is loading. So I figured it was worth a shot, and copy pasted it into my trials Upgrade with a CD Key area. And it worked, just F.Y.I. as a workaround.
EDIT: Or as I just found out, Steam has the CD key easily accessible through a button in the Steam menus, but who wants the easy way anyway?

You can use:
- A Steam CD Key (post above mine tells you how to get it) - A box CD Key (which also says does not work with existing account) - Buy PLEX (works with all accounts)
Either way, I knew it would work simply because when you go into your account info on the eve website, and try to activate a trial there is a spot for a steam CD key specifically there.

So just to be 100% sure. It is possible to buy EvE on steam and then use the CD key to upgrade a trial?

Dude ... check the posts above yours. Cheesedawg and Insanious both stated it worked and where the key could be found.

i think it is but people wont get the +30 day on buddy invites cause people used to exploit that. they used to buddy invite a new char they themselves made, buy the sub for 5 bucks for that char, and they gained 30 days on their main. so they could basically buy 90 days for their main for 15 bucks, while regular sub gave only 30 days for 15 bucks.

I wish i knew if this was true or not... or i would do this and just put time on my main account for $5

Whether or not the person who provided your buddy link gets added time, I do not know. However, it is clearly in the terms and conditions that Steam Store CD Keys are not eligible payment methods for activating your buddy account:
Eligible subscription activations can be funded by Credit/Debit cards, Direct Debit, WebMoney Transfer, paysafecard, ETC, PLEX, iDeal and PayPal. Payments not eligible for this offer: CD Keys, including CD Keys purchased or received from non-CCP sources and online stores such as, but not limited to: Steam Store, Direct2Drive, Gamers Gate, Impulse Driven. Source (Click terms and conditions)
Also, CCP has commented on simply signing up for a buddy account to give yourself cheap play time (which I am aware is not what you are planning), stating:
This process of gaining extra days is considered a billing exploit as stated in the terms and conditions of the Buddy Program. Source
Proceed at your own risk, I suppose.

Bweeee.. gonna edit all of this, this sale could have created a lot of issues with how the corp works but since it was only a 1 day sale we might be lucky and not have to deal with too many people coming in saying ''Sup i never played eve but I bought my account already for 5$''

This is what I get when i try to use my steam cdkey, though i read on eve forums that if u upgrade a trial u wont get free 30 dyas
