tl:dr - Is smurfing something many players are familiar with? Is smurfing generally disliked or frowned upon? Should I seriously consider changing my name from Smurphy to something else? Smurphy is essentially my real name (S. Murphy). I have lots of other name ideas (Ebil Genious etc.) and I think I have a free name change.
I am a newbie to Starcraft 2: I got the game a month ago. I didn't have any friends who played. I liked the concept that battle.net would match me with players around my skill level. So I pushed the "find me a 1v1 opponent" button a bunch of times. Apparently I was laddering. I play random because I am equally bad with all three races. My micro is non-existent: if I put Zealots in front of Stalkers or if I target fire Marauders into Roaches I consider that "good micro" for me.
However, my macro isn't as embarrassing. I understand the concept that if I have a huge income I can make oodles of guys who blow stuff up. If I think the opponent is turtling I expand several times and get a huge income and tons of production. When I see their army come out I A-move my force at them and just keep sending stuff at them until they die.
In some ladder games I received comments that I now know relate to "smurfing." At first I had no idea why some people were saying things like "damn smurfs" or "what is your real ID". Am I likely to get such comments often?
Personally, I'd prefer not to hear anything from my opponent and I don't talk in games other than a "Have a nice day" or something similar when I lose. I simply want to watch stuff get blowed up. I don't care if I win or lose. But I do dislike getting random comments after games from my opponents. Will I get more comments because of my name (Smurphy)? Should I change my name to avoid such comments?
I have read other threads on smurfing on Team Liquid. Some players have a strong dislike of it, apparently. However, because I am a newbie I'm unable to determine the overall general view on smurfing. How many people even know what the word means and how many dislike people who do it?

alot of wellknown and good players used to smurf on ICCUP

You could make your name into something more of a riddle. Like SmallAndBlueWithAWhiteHat If you like your name don't change it, but if this happens a lot and annoys you very much maybe doing a change into something a little more 'circumspect' might be better Depends on what you feel more strongly about.

At first, I thought you were CharlieMurphy smurfing. I just saw that he was banned. =)
As to your question, it's really a symptom of modern-day culture. When people undergo a set-back, whether in real life or games, they want to displace all responsibility. In the case of gamers they'll blame imbalance, mapping issues, cheese, facing a smurf, etc.
My advice to you is, you know it's going to happen. When your opponent loses they're going to find something to blame. If they blame you, just smile. Be proud of your name. =) Just keep this in mind and don't become that player.

Well, I know what it means and I don't exactly hate it. I can see why the top-notch players would want to smurf and play at peace instead of getting spammed with 50,000 messages the nanosecond they log on to their account.
If you're getting comments from random players regarding smurfing definitely change it but give your future name some thought though, due to Blizzard going the World of Warcraft-route with the name changing i.e. it costs money after the first time.

That's what I thought as well. Though if CM made this account on Nov. 4, he had some prescience about his ban.

With a name like that I can see why frustrated people would accuse you of smurfing, but unless it's a serious concern to you I wouldn't go for the name change, remember it will cost money after the first time.

Smurfing is when a really good player plays on another account so people don't know who it is. Some celebrities use it for anonymity's sake, as a lot of big names get inundated with messages by strangers. Other people might use it to beat lesser players and feel good about themselves.
People don't like smurfs because they don't like being beat by players better than them, and they see it as unfair because the smurf is not realistically at their level, so they should never have had to play each other.
However, you don't have to worry about changing your name. As you play more ladder, and you get placed into a league more suited to your skill level, the games should balance out, and the opponents will no longer consider it likely that you are a smurf.

it's hilarious that your ID is Smurphy. if i got matched against someone with that name, i would definitely be intimidated from the start.

My name "Smurphy" has nothing to do with the show "The Smurfs" and lots to do with the name my mommy gave me: "S. Murphy". I am not really attached to the name. I find "Ebil Genious" to be more humorous. How can anyone take anything someone named "Ebil Genious" says seriously? You get to say epic responses like "Really? You are trying to say that I, Ebil Genious, am somehow wrong on this topic of discussion? Surely you jest. A name like 'Ebil Genious' bespeaks of a vast intellect and keen insight."
My question is mostly focused on "will anger at smurfing happen a lot"? I don't know. I was hoping some of you might give me insight to that answer. I've had it happen on occasion but I'm unsure of how much it will happen in the future and how regularly it will occur.

That's a very good thought. Reading these boards and playing the game has taught me that some people will find a way to be angry. Will there be more anger if my name is Smurphy?
Currently I am in the Platinum league. I still have to read what some buttons do while playing. Yes, in ladder games I occasionally hover the mouse over some things in the bottom right and read what they do. If I somehow improve to diamond league will I possibly receive more or less suspicion/angry words due to my name?

Be flattered if people think you are smurfing, take it as a compliment on your superior gameplay. (most people on Bnet shouldn't really care if you're smurfing, but there will always be people that ragequit, it's just that the insult of choice is just regarding smurfing instead of your dick)

Wow you have an unfortunate tendency to pick entandraic nicks... the problem with "ebil genius" is that there is an sc2 pro team named Evil Geniuses.
