Hey gang. TL has always been close to the center of the big wide internet for me so I thought I'd tell people here about a little disaster in my life. If you read the blog title I already told you!
I was walking home from the bars last Friday, around 11:30 so I could make the last train back up to Midorii and I got hit by some crazy driver.
Here's how I got hit: I was crossing at a crosswalk with the green pedestrian walking light lit up. A dude came around the corner making a left-hand turn (people drive on the left here so it isn't that flagrantly bad, but even that turn is illegal on a red light). I guess I got tossed a ways across the street and he drove off.
Here's how crazy the driver was: He didn't have a license because he hit someone last month or something like that (quite recently). He's an old packrat loonie with no money and I have vague recollections that he's not going to feel too heavy a ramification. He was in police custody but I don't know if he's facing charges or what. I don't know a lot about the law here. He told the cops he didn't stop when he hit me because he thought I was dead.
So some kind folks, including someone stopped at the light, got his license plate number and vehicle description and the guy go picked up. They swabbed my cheeks in the hospital and the blood and stuff on the car matched my DNA.
(This is all kinda disjointed because I'm on painkillers, but now that I started sharing it, I might as well finish.)
I'm okay though! My body seemed not to notice. There are a couple of scabs that are no worse than I might get playing a fierce game of ultimate. My head is a little worse off. My skull was cracked but it's pretty minor. There's no brain damage. I don't remember the incident and I have a flock of missing memories from all over my life. They're just minor things though, totally random, and I hear they'll come back to the nest one by one as time goes on.
(Oh shit, I forgot something big so I edited this paragraph in) I also don't have hearing in one ear. The doctors say that it will come back bit by bit over the coming weeks, though it probably won't get back to what it was. That's pretty shitty but considering what happened I'm pretty lucky to get away with only one serious result.
I'm out of the hospital as of today, which feels great. For the severity of the injury having only a week long stay seems amazing. I go back next week for surgery to mend a damaged cheekbone that is impeding the normal lateral movement of my lower jaw. It'll be intra-oral to preserve my dashing good looks (the nurses insisted, I swear).
So that's what's up with thopol these days. I just thought I'd share a big event with TL because I spend way too much time here.

Fuck that driver, I hope he eats shit and dies in the jail. I hope you're OK, and recover the rest of it pretty quickly.

nice positive attitude you got there

I hope you get better soon! :D Glad to see you're OK though :O

He told the cops he didn't stop when he hit me because he thought I was dead.
WHAAAT??!! That's one crazy dude
Glad to hear you're OK and out of the hospital soon. Hope you'll get your hearing back soon though.

Wow this kind of optimism just makes my jaw drop. My hat off to you.

get a truck and hunt him down! raaaaage!
anyways, best of luck for your several pending recoveries. I dig the optimism, don't think i could do that.

I've already seen two people get hit by cars right in front of me (in the exact same spot too, weird).
The first one was killed, the second one was paralyzed from the neck down for life. First guy was on a bike going fuck off fast down a hill when a car turned right in front of him. The guy slammed his head into the top of the suv where the back window was. The second guy was riding a moped, and got hit while turning by a car that was coming down a hill (the same hill the bike rider in the first story was coming down). Their bodies landed in literally the exact same spot. I was about to cross this intersection, so both events happened not 15 feet in front of my eyes. My friend's friend also got the front half of his foot ripped off when he got hit by a car, same road, almost the same intersection.
Needless to say, I am fucking careful when I cross the street. Sorry you got hit man, hopefully all the memories come back.

Whoa, crazy story fly.stat. Must've been terrible to watch someone get hit by a car (and die)
Easy to understand why you're carefull, should maybe be abit more carefull too after reading this and I also think people with a drivers-license should have abit more learning before entering a deathmachine.

wow, that pretty sick ! get well soon ! but that dude clearly belongs into prison ! gl to you !

wow you should thank god you made it out like that. Hope you get well soon man.

Glad to hear you're ok. One of my long-time online friends was hit and killed by a car in Japan last January. I guess gaijin are worth bonus points.
|
Wow that really sucks. Its terrifying that people can do that, and in some cases keep their lisences(in the us at least) bastard should go to jail for a long time and never be allowed within 10 feet of a car ever again

don't know what the law is like in japan, but in addition to the criminal charges you should look into filing civil suit.
fuck i hate motorists so much. this sort of shit almost-happens in my town daily. just in the last month i've had cars nearly left-turn into me (drivers drive on the right side here) while I'm crossing the street on a lit crosswalk.
hope you recover completely.

Thanks for all the big ups guys.
I really have no idea about the legal side to the whole thing but I'm certainly going to be looking into it. It would be miserable if having such a personal disaster also was a big pain financially, but I'm already expecting a blow so it won't be too hard to cope with.
It's really easy to feel optimistic when I'm in such good condition just a week after getting pummeled across the road by a speeding car. I know I'm amazingly lucky and it feels it'd be the wrong thing to be down after something so bad. I mean, I could have been killed if the angles were all just a little different. It's easy to be glad things turned out how they did with that in mind.
I really appreciate all the well wishing from you folks. TL is quite the good fellow.

wow, awesome that you're ok
probably good karma ^.^

The one that happens ALOT around here,
Crossing the street, and some guy who thinks green light = you (the pedestrian) have to stop even though you have the walky dude and he doesn't have a green arrow.
So he just whips around in a right turn of hate and evil and bump!
I got backed into by a pizza guy once! I was texting my GF walking down the sidewalk and the dude didn't see me and backed over me. Rofl.
