Things to keep in mind:
I hate tourist traps like going into the statue of liberty
I don't mind doing anything else.
I'm going with a bunch of friends.

You might be able to find a place that doesn't check IDs in NYC, give it a try. I'm pretty sure I did back in a day. What do you plan on doing anyways? Walk around and try food at different places? Go to clubs and bars? Boston has very little nightlife unless you can go to a party. Everything closes at 2am besides a couple of semi-gay clubs (Rise and something else). On the other hand NYC is crazy at night.

That said, Boston is awesome. I am a big salsa dancer, the club scene there is friendly and a blast. The ethnic food is the best I've ever had in the states and almost as well overseas. If you find a Thai or Indian place, particularly, they are unbelievable. I'd probably say the Chinese and Mexican is worse than average. The North End has the best Italian food you'll ever have. Also, Mike's Pastries is the BEST desserts ever. Their tiramisu changed my life. If you are into sports, you can try to get to a Sox game, I'm a Yankees fan, and I've still enjoyed Fenway. The college hockey is just getting going, if that is your thing. BU's team is solid, BC's is fine, and tickets are cheap. Even after years, I still loved walking around Boston. The city is huge, gorgeous, and too big to really take it all in. The Commons are great to relax in, be stupid in. There are a ton of music shows ALL the time, look it up on LiveNation.com. Also, there is a ton of live music from local bands but mostly in bars. You can't go wrong though if you can get to hear them though, Berkeley bands are everywhere and they are really good. The Prudential center has crazy shopping, if you are into that, and you can walk Newbury and Boylston for finding all kinds of stuff as well. My only tips? Stick to the center of the city, go West as much as you want, East no further than the North End, and really no further South than the Financial district. Jamaica Plain, Roxbury are fine if you know the area. You just don't want to be unfamiliar and out there. Boston is a city where everything exists, you just have to decide what you want to do, and find it.

I've always thought that Boston is such a special place. I have no idea why, I keep going there every time I can, never gets old.

Are you looking to party? Go to the Lower East Side of Manhattan (you can start at Union Square on the subway among other places) and simply walk. On any night of the week, New York City is packed with people and energy on every block. There are more bars than you can imagine. Looking for a show? BrooklynVegan.com (for all of NYC), search for some dates and voila- cheap, regular shows with some of the best bands in the world. Central Park is GREAT to walk around during the day. You could hit up a couple of the many awesome museums we have, then get outside, grab a hotdog and a breath of fresh air and lay in the great lawn for a few minutes. Avoid uptown and avoid midtown except for the park, museums, shows and places you've specifically scouted out. It's too expensive to bet that you'll find awesome cheap places just wandering. That said, it's chock full of stuff if you put in 10 minutes of research online. Downtown NYC has everything, all day and all night. You will be able to get into bars even at 20, though I don't know what you look like and you have to use intuition as to which bars to try.. Brooklyn is awesome. If you like music, it's got everything. Its bars are cheaper than Manhattan's, its shows are cheaper than Manhattan's and everything about it is cheaper! That said, you have to know where to go. Take the L to Bedford and walk around Williamsburg. Take the Q to 7th Ave and walk around Park Slope and visit Prospect Park. Take the Q to Coney Island and eat Nathan's (better than any other Nathan's you've ever had), ride a roller coaster and take a dip in the ocean if its a nice day. Queens sucks. Sorry, Queens. Astoria is an alright neighborhood and if you have someone showing you around, it can be good for a night. The rest of the borough sucks. I guess you could go to Flushing for authentic Asian cuisine that you could have eaten in Manhattan or Brooklyn but you'd be an idiot if you did. In conclusion: Downtown Manhattan at all times of day. Midtown when the sun is up and uptown never unless you have a lot of money to drop. Brooklyn if you are looking for a cheaper but still rowdy experience. Queens if your crazy asian Aunt lives in Flushing and you really just want to play on your cousin's XBox. Bronx never, Staten Island even less than never. New York is the greatest city in the world, I really recommend getting a few events down to go to (museum, concerts, food) and spending the rest of the time walking around and soaking it all in.
