Intro:
Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of the game is to lynch or kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. It's much like a game of poker because mafia members are also part of the town during the day and may manipulate the vote to their liking.

This mafia game works slightly different than the normal one (read: Mafia), so I'll explain it a bit more. During the night mafia will collectively decide on and send in their hits to me, who they want dead (it's a good idea to discuss them during day so you know ahead of time). Any player with a special role that can act during the night must PM me their actions each and every night.

If the mafia at any time outnumber or equal the townspeople, they win the game. The goal for the townspeople is to lynch all the members of the mafia by whatever analysis, teamwork, or guile they have. The goal of the mafia, of course, is to kill the townspeople with murderous precision.

The game is typically very active and there are usually numerous walls of text to wade through. If you are not a person who likes reading then I highly suggest you don't play the game because it is essential to being informed within the game. I will not compensate for ignorance.

Rules: (subject to change) (Also, my setup is quite different, so please read everything thoroughly no matter what kind of experience you have with TL Mafia. Also note that this is geared more toward players who have at least a game or two of experience)

Posting Etiquette:
In the past, many players have complained or quit because of the excessive bm and pointless flaming. If you are posting aggressively and know you couldn't get away with it anywhere else on this site, it probably isn't ok here. Besides, contrary to what you may think, yelling at someone is a great way to convince people to disagree with your arguments. Please do not post inappropriately, or it will earn you a warning based on mod discretion. If you choose to ignore the warning, you will be modkilled. Examples of inappropriate posts include excessive cursing and vulgarity, among other things.

Cheating:
Cheating includes (but is not limited to) the following and will get you banned from future games:
1. Posting after death, outside of your one allowed post (details later). Outside of this, please do not post anything which could even POSSIBLY affect the game. If you post anything which I deem game-altering, whether intended or not, you will be temp banned from my future games as per Strategic Rule Breaking. I reserve the final say on the matter. If you have any doubts to the acceptability of an after-death post, PM me before you make your post and I will try to get back to you as soon as possible.
2. Betraying your role and ruining the game for everyone by doing something like handing out your mafia's member list to the town.
3. Logging on to someone else's account / checking their PMs / looking over someone's shoulder to get their role.
4. Comparing role PM times to determine roles.
5. Posting screenshots of your inbox. This is not a photoshop competition.
6. Posting any PM you receive from a host and also any other PMs at all.
7. Editing posts. Editing posts is not allowed for any reason. The mods can see your edits, and if you are caught, you will look suspicious.
8. Strategic Rule Breaking is when you break a rule and that action leads to a net gain for your team. If you do this, you will be temp banned from my future games, and I will request that you be placed on the TL Mafia Ban List for one game longer than you would receive for inactivity bans. Again, your pleas of innocence will not be entertained. Feel free to contact me to confirm that your strategy is valid if you have any doubts.
9. Playing for the mafia when you’re town in hopes of getting recruited.

Voting rules:
1. You must post your vote in the Vote Thread (which will be in a separate thread in the mafia forum). Do not PM it to me, or send it to me in any other way.
2. You must clearly declare and bold your vote in this format ie: ##Vote Qatol.
3. You can not autochange your vote to the losing or winning bandwagon.
4. You may vote for yourself if you so choose. You may not vote for anyone dead or outside the game.
5. Voting is mandatory. You may NOT abstain. Vote, or be modkilled.
6. Person with the most votes at the end of the day dies. In the case of a tie, the first person with the most votes will by lynched.

Modkills:
Inactivity has been a problem in every mafia game so far. My rules are simple: Miss a vote and you will be modkilled. Anyone who is modkilled may not play in one of my games until they have proven themselves to be active players in another game / until I say so. ~~I am hoping I never have to modkill anyone.~~ I want to modkill someone, please let me do it, even if I don’t know how to use lightning. Please remain active. If you do not believe you can maintain the required level of activity, please do not sign up for the game in the first place. If something comes up, then please PM me ASAP and I will try to find you a replacement.

*Furthermore, you must post at least once in this thread by the end of the first day to avoid being modkilled. Simply voting doesn't work. This is to confirm your presence in the game. And again, you must vote every day.

Strategic modkills are NOT allowed, either. A strategic modkill is defined as anything that will better the position of your team. You cannot threaten with the words "well if you kill X and he's not mafia I'll get myself modkilled" or anything in that vein. Essentially, you may not use your non-majority-decided death as a bargaining chip. If you do happen to be modkilled, you will be put on Qatol's ban list, and cannot play in an "official" game till you have served your sentence.

Clues:
There are no clues.

Time Cycle:
This game will follow a strict 24 hour night/48 hour day cycle. In case I will not be there, any votes after the 48 hour mark will not count and the game will be put on halt until the night post is up. Currently the tentative time deadline is 02:00 GMT (+00:00), but that is subject to change.

Roles

This is an semi-open setup. Roles will be disclosed, but role counts will not. Read this section carefully, as the roles may be different from what you are familiar with.

Townie
You may just be a normal player but you are the backbone of the town! Your goal, with the special roles of the town, is to help bring the Mafia to justice. You get no special powers but the ability to vote during day. Blue Roles may look pretty but the real power lies with you!

Detective
You have the ability to make night investigations. Once per night, starting on Night 2, you may ask for the role of any player. I will PM you the results at the end of the night (the results will reflect that night’s recruitment).

Jailkeeper
You have the ability to prevent all night actions on a player of your choice during the night. This includes DT checks, bombs, night hits, and recruitment. It does not prevent roleblocks. You may not protect yourself. No one will be notified of any results. Jailkeeper can protect someone the night she/he gets killed.

Mad Hatter
You have the ability to lay bombs on people at night. Once per night, you may place a bomb on a person, or switch a bomb from target to target. If you happen to die for any reason, the person (people) upon whom you have placed the bomb will take a hit, and will die unless they have protection. You may place up to two bombs maximum. If a person with a bomb upon them is lynched, the bomb is not refunded. Your bombs go through extra night lives.

Veteran
You get two night lives instead of one! This means it takes at least two successful hits in one night to kill you, or one hit on each of two separate nights. A veteran will be told when they lose one of their night lives. If you get lynched or bombed, you die, regardless of whether you have an extra night life remaining.

Roleblocker
You have the ability to prevent a player from performing a night action. You must inform me of your target before the night begins, and your target will be blocked for that night. Your target will be informed that they have been role blocked only if they can perform a night action. You may not roleblock the same player more than twice in a row. You do not lose your ability upon recruitment.

Coroner
You have the ability to reveal the true identities of the dead once during the game. Your ability can be activated at night and used on that night’s and all previous deaths. In the following beginning-of-day post, it will be mentioned that your power (your name will not be specified) was used, and I will reveal all of the true roles / identities / alignments of the dead players. Your ability can be roleblocked.

Dream Catcher
You start out as a regular townie. But if any blue role dies or gets recruited by the mafia, you will be given a random blue role (Detective, Jailkeeper, Mad Hatter, Veteran, Roleblocker, or Coroner). If you are recruited at any point, you lose whatever role you have.

Traitor
You are a townie who is tired of the injustice towards the so-called mafia. You have no abilities but you want the Mafia to exterminate the town. You do not know who the Mafia members are, and the Mafia do not know who you are. You do not affect the Mafia's KP, even if they find you. If the Mafia win the game, you win as well. You show up as Townie to rolechecks and count toward town population. Note: Traitor is NOT a third party / mafia member. You stop being a 'Traitor' if you are ever recruited (but you become a real Mafia lolol).

Mafia – (starting 0, Max 5)
Your goal is to eliminate everyone else in the town. Your ability, as a group, is killing off whomever you decide on at night and being able to communicate with each other outside the thread. You may kill your own members. You may choose to kill no one. No one will be killed if you do not send in your night action.
Mafia will be informed of their new member every night, if there is one. They are never informed of who the Godfather is.
If any mafia member is roleblocked, all mafia lose their killing power that night.
Starting Mafia KP: 1.

***The Godfather***
You are the head of the mafia, but none of them will be informed of who you are. You control them from a distance, and have the ability to, each night, recruit one person. At the end of the night, that person will join your team of mafia. You have two night lives. The Godfather cannot be any secondary role (Free Mason/Lover).

More about recruiting: The maximum number of mafia at any point is 5. Send your choice in to me every night (do so every night to be safe) – if there are already 5 mafia (if one will die that night, it still counts), the recruitment will fail. Any recruited blues lose their powers, unless otherwise stated.
If you try to recruit a Free Mason, that person will remain a townsperson (will not become mafia), and no new mafia will be recruited for that night. The Free Mason will notified that the Godfather tried to recruit him/her that night.
You will never be notified the results of your recruitment .

The Godfather will recruit a new mafia member before the game begins (after role PMs). No other night actions will be carried out on “Night 0,” and the mafia member will be notified of his status before the game begins. For this reason, role PMs will be sent out 24 hours before the game begins. If the Godfather fails to PM me during Night 0, no one will be recruited.

Secondary Roles: (Godfather may not be either)

*In addition to the roles above, you may also be one of the following roles:

Free Mason
There are two of you. You have the ability to PM each other. You may not be recruited as mafia, but will be notified if someone tries to recruit you. If a Free Mason is roleblocked and recruited by the Godfather on the same night, he/she will become a member of the mafia, but will still be able to PM his fellow Free Mason.

Lovers (codename: Romeo & Juliet)
There are two of you. You have the ability to PM each other. If one of you dies, the other will also die (or “commit suicide” if you prefer).

Other Game Rules:

No PMs except if your role allows it. Play to win. Don't play against the spirit of the game. No cheating. Do not quote your role PM or even refer to it in any manner. Don't screen shot or copy/paste it either. Mods have the final say in any matter. If you have any questions or assumptions it's best to ask a mod before taking action.

Double Lynch
Usable twice per game, the town lynches two people instead of one. This means on the next day everyone gets two votes to distribute between two different people. The double lynch is activated by voting for it in addition to a player (or players if a double lynch is currently activated). The vote must exceed half the number of players voting that day. IE: If there are 20 players voting then the town needs 11 votes to use a double lynch. Double lynches may be voted on starting Day 2. Double lynches may be used on consecutive days. Players cannot place both of their votes on one player when a double lynch is in effect.

Regarding Mod Day/Night Posts: No information will be revealed about the people who die, except that they, well, died. I may or may not choose to include funny stories about how they died, but these stories will not contain any clues of any sort – they will solely be for my (and your) entertainment.
Example: DarthThienAn has died.

Death Post: When you die, you are allowed to post one of the following: a player’s name, a player’s name backwards, or a role. A name implies that the person is innocent, a name backwards implies that the person is not innocent, and a role is assumed to be a death-roleclaim from you.

You are free to lie or say nothing if you wish but must maintain the correct “format.” If you plan on making any other death comments such as “Good luck town!” please post it separately, and after your Death Post. Your Death Post should be completely isolated from anything else, and should be one word, unless it is a role that consists of two English words (such as “Free Mason” or “Mad Hatter”). You may not post a combination of names and roles of any sort. PM me if you have any questions about the validity of what you plan to post.

Example posts (bold helps): “Qatol.” “lotaQ.” “Medic.”

More on recruiting/cheating: Anyone can be recruited to join the mafia team, except for Free Masons (see exception under Free Masons). **If you are recruited as mafia and play against your new team, you will be modkilled, banned from all of my future games, and banned as per the Strategic Rule Breaking clause. This would be an example of betraying your team. Playing for the town when you are mafia is unacceptable. In the same way, townies should play for the town, even if they might get recruited later. For an example, I do not want a repeat of what happened in Caller’s Three Kingdom’s Mafia game.

Furthermore, there are to be no deals made by or with the Godfather along the lines of “I’ll help the mafia if you recruit me later,” or anything of that sort. The Godfather is not allowed to PM anyway, so this shouldn’t even be able to happen.

Q&A/clarifications

Does the town win if they kill the Godfather?
No, they have to kill the GF + all mafia.

If the Godfather is checked by a DT, do you return "Godfather"?
Yes, all DT checks are 100% (minus roleblock).

If there are mafia when the Godfather dies, what happens to them?
They stay alive and continue to play the game normally.

How to write L's name backwards?
"_|" for names that are impossible to type backwards, you may clarify, ie. "L (backwards)".

If you roleblock one lover the night the other lover dies, does the first lover stay alive?
Yes, the first lover will stay alive. This does not apply to lynches.

***About Win Conditions***
Townies / Blues: Your goal is to eliminate the Godfather and anyone he has made into a mafia member. The game ends when all of the mafia and the Godfather are dead.
Godfather / Mafia: Your goal is to take control of the town. If your numbers (Godfather included) ever outnumber the remaining town members, you win.
Third parties: Only third party is the Traitor. The Traitor's goal is to have the mafia win.You count as a town member.

If we lynch someone who would be modkilled...
Lynching takes precedence over modkill. The "runner-up" for being lynched would not be lynched if the person with the most votes would have been modkilled anyway.

Did you port this setup or does it need balancing? It seems really powerful for mafia unless there's at least two free mason pairs. It doesn't specify in the rules does mafia KP ever go up?

Roleblocking mafia KP seems really swingy - if the roleblocker finds one and notes that kills stopped (obviously), they don't even necessarily want to point the scum finger at that target. Stifling the KP indefinitely seems immensely powerful while trying to find the other scum/godfather.

Just my first thoughts off the top of my head.

port? like import? Nah, I just kinda made this up / took it from personal (IRL) experience. Edit: also did some balancing with some random nubs here. It's far from being perfectly balanced but I'm okay with it as it is.

The whole mafia KP + roleblocking thing is a part of the game, helps balance against the mafia and can work for both sides - it all depends on how well the roleblocker plays.

This is why I say it's swingy. It makes the roleblocker ridiculously powerful. It's like a super powered medic that needs to find a mafia among presumably several (and can just stick to that target) rather than trying to match up and predict who the mafia wants to kill.

One of the tenants of mafia game design is that you don't want too much power in any one role.

Compare what a game would look like if the roleblocker(s) eventually mafia vs roleblocker(s) never finding mafia. If the games play out too much differently, we're playing a game more of luck than of mafia. Some chance is fine, this just seems huge.

At best, roleblocker is keeping town's numbers even while townies join the Dark Side and you lose track of who might/might not be mafia. It's not that gamebreaking.

So then let's see. Assuming no extraneous things happen, at start there are 2 mafia (one mafia, one GF). Town mislynches. After night, there are 18 people, with 3 mafia. Town mislynches. After night there are 16 people with 4 mafia. Town mislynches. After night there are 14 people with 5 mafia. Say town kills the GF (if they don't they'll probably lose since GF can keep recruiting). 13 people with 4 mafia. After night there's 12 people with 4 mafia. That's pretty bad odds for the town although doable. Even harder though since the mafia haven't been mafia the whole game, making it harder to figure out who's scum. Seems bad for the town.

It basically boils down to: town has 3 days to kill the GF. Any other mafia kills by the town only delay the game a bit. In fact at some point even if the town knows a mafia member, it's probably better to not kill them and gun for the GF.

ok. read the entire rules. seems pretty basic to me except for recruitment
