My dad works for the WHO (World Health Organization) and he's been doing investigative work on new flu strains ever since late last year. He's in Laos right now and his work takes him all around Southeast Asia. His team discovered a new strain of flu that looks like it's a combination of avian (bird) flu and swine flu. I'm too lazy to find the wikipedia page for "recombination" or whatever the process is called that makes the joining of strains possible.

Anyway, the reason I'm posting this blog is to give TL a scoop on what is sure to be a pretty big news story in the next couple weeks. What is going to make this so big is that the flu physically affects hosts structurally.

Basically aside from normal flu symptoms (in animals, "normal flu symptoms" usually means "death") this new strain makes some pretty weird changes to the structure of the body. My dad sent me some pics and I think you guys (and the press, eventually) will find them interesting. You huys will probably think the pics are interesting in an "oh cool" kind of way... the press will probably find them interesting in an "OMG WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE HYPE HYPE HYPE" kind of way.

recombination short version:

Human flu RNA mixes with Avian flu RNA in pig cells and makes new flu strains. This is why virtually all new flu strains come from SE Asia where people live with their chickens and ducks and pigs.
