Sorry for the late day, Saturday is sport day in South Africa, and I got a bit caught up with all the games! Anyway, here's another five albums; I hope you like them!
1. Kings of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak What? Indie When? 2004 Why? This has always been my favourite album by them. If you know the new music and not this, give it a try. Show me! + Show Spoiler +
2. E Elgar - Cello Concerto in E minor What? Classical When? 1919 Why? Absolutely stunning. Seriously eery and beautiful. Show me! + Show Spoiler +
3. Percee P - Perseverance What? Hip Hop When? 2007 Why? This really is a killer album. Produced by madlib, featuring some killer guest spots like Vinnie Paz, and killer samples. Show me! + Show Spoiler +
4. Blackfield - Blackfield II What? Prog rock When? 2007 Why? Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree meets up with an Israeli glam rocker to make this stunning album. Show me! + Show Spoiler +
5. DreamEvil - Evilized What? Heavy Metal When? 2003 Why? Heavy metal often sounds cheesy, DreamEvil manages to sound cheesy and awesome at the same time. Epic songs! Show me! + Show Spoiler +
There we go. I think today is fairly good mix. Nice power metal, nice hip hop, killer classical. Hopefully you all like it. Also, since no-one got the e-cookie from yesterday, I will extend it today. Does anyone know what the Percee P track is sampling?
Disclaimer: The title says that it is Daigomi's guide to good listening. That means its my opinion. Feel free to disagree as long as you provide reasons; I enjoy a good discussion as much as the next person. Also, I just like listening to music, I don't give a shit for the political implications of any music.
+ Show Spoiler [E-Cookie winners to date] +Eti307 - Wale sampling Yann Tiersen

I LOVE the Elgar concerto. Good pick!

Why do you only post cello music whenever you post classical music?
|
maybe that's all he likes?

Steven Wilson is a baller.
So's Elgar.

that is not heavy metal lol

DreamEvil is an ok band. They seem to try to sound like Hammerfall a lot on their albums, but they lack the distinct 'epic' feeling that most power metal bands deliver. My biggest problem with them is that their riffs are very bland sounding, just a couple palm muted notes and then a chord. Then they proceed to repeat that one riff for the rest of the song :/
I guess it's not just the blandness of the riffs, but also the way they play them. HammerFall does a good job of making the music energetic, but with DreamEvil it feels like a heavy slab, not exactly what power metal or heavy metal should be :/

Still what John Coltrane said is true, I love cello's, more than any other instrument. Still, I'll spread it out a bit more from now

So's Elgar. Steve Wilson definitely. I pretty much like everything he does. Elgar on the other hand... I only really like his cello concerto. Still, I do love that, so maybe you're right!

The easiest way to think of heavy metal is that it is that it is metal similar to the first pure metal bands (ala Judas Priest / Iron Maiden). Similar to Power Metal and Speed Metal, but its more inspired by traditional metal, and less on showing off the skills of the guitarist.

Heavy metal guitars focus on epic sounding riffs that are slightly more basic (think perhaps of classic rock which did a similar thing). They do have guitar spammage, but its usually restricted to solos. That's actually why I prefer heavy metal to power metal mostly, it seems less show-offy and self-indulgent. There are power metal bands I like (specifically older power metal like Helloween, Gamma Ray, and even Hammerfall), but in general I enjoy heavy metal to power metal.

I like Only By The Night, but they really had to tone down their sound for that album. Aha Shake Heartbreak, on the other hand, has their sound on full display. Its really a good cd!
Also, surely someone must be able to identify the sample from the Percee P track. A whole forum full of computer gamers and no-one gets it...
