His stand-up is awful, like Jimmy Carr with all the comedy surgically removed. He can't act. Oh, and at live 8 he disgusted me.

Saying "yeah, but seriously, my penis is tiny". That's not a joke, that's just a fat guy talking about his dick.

I'm not a huge fan of Jimmy Carr either but Jimmy Carr does rude jokes that are actually funny. Ricky Gervais just rambles on tangents, then attempts to be self deprecating, then says something rude (not a rude joke, just something you wouldn't say in a normal conversation) and comes off as continually, overwhelmingly smug. Basically his entire comic style is based around saying and doing things that you wouldn't normally do. I prefer my comedians with a little more comedy and a little less hugely exaggerated utterly unconvincing self deprecation.

I always thought his comedy catered more to english than american audiences. I think his comedy is genious and subtle. Nah I know, he threads a fine line between comedy and honesty. He is very ironic and calls alot of bullshit, which sometimes makes people cringe.

He makes me cringe because I'm embarassed to belong to a species that encourages his kind of behavior. He got famous through the UK Office in which he basically did and said things you wouldn't normally do while believing he was competent. The character was hugely dislikeable and the show would only be enjoyable if you're the kind of person who enjoys sitting back and thinking "you're a huge douche, I'm so much better than you" about a fictional character. He then took that style and became a comedian with it. He doesn't understand how to do edgy humour. Making ironic jokes referencing something that's too soon or rude or whatever, fine. Just talking about masturbation, not actually funny. It'd be okay if he wasn't so self deprecating because it's a complete act, he's a smug bastard. Not all English people have the same sense of humour.

I just think David Brent is an awesome character and Ricky Gervais just kills in that series. The Extras is seriously awesome too He can convey alot besides the actual words that come out of his mouth; body language, tonality etc

I know your not going to change your mind about him, but before he was in The Office, he was presenting a radio station on XFM with Karl PIlkington and Stephen Merchant and that was, collectively, the funniest thing I have EVER heard. Also I disagree with his standup being bad, his Fame and Animals Tours were amazing, maybe some of this later stuff isn't so good, maybe he sold out I don't know, I haven't watched it yet but I really think he's an incredible comedian.
