Maybe they are relying on him because he is the most reliable person for the job. @OP I you are busy, postpone it, but I don't see why you have to get mad about it. It makes you seem kind of petulant. Get it done and take satisfaction in helping out someone that you care about. totally agreed i dont see why theres any need to get 'pissed off' thats just what moms do (even tho her approach was quite condescending just be like lol mom busy this weekend but i'll take care of it asap and stop caring its a fking shed
While I agree that the task in this situation is menial and stuff, I think that it's really the principle of the situation. A 24 year old, busy college student with a job, being volunteered to do other people's bitch work, for no apparent reason. Even if it is family, this should give you more reason to not be passive aggressive about it. Of all people, they should understand what your circumstances are.
Your cousin doesn't even seem to have any reason not to do it...

while they should understand your circumstances you cannot expect them to, and when they dont, its pointless getting mad
if it was me i'd just say 'sure thing' then hire some PeurtoRicans to do it and send them to grandma's house to complete the task to a. get the job done without inconveniencing myself and to b. lol at my mom

like 1.5 yrs ago i was back home over the summer and my parents said 'daniel ur mowing the lawn tonight' after dinner
so i was like 'ok' then i got out the phone book and started looking through it
my mom was like what are u doing?
me: 'looking for a lawn mowing service...ill just hire them then play poker in the meanwhile to make that money plus some'
then my parents said forget about it and my dad mowed the lawn
does this make me a bad son?

I hired a homeless guy to sell water for me to pay my rent.
I hire A LOT of homeless people for random things, then go eat lunch with them and talk about the craziest shit.
You're not a bad son rekrul =(

does this make me a bad son? No, but doing it like that is acting a bit like a douche. Many do a lot of things that they just as well could have hired others to do and done their real job and earned more in the same time, its the social aspect of scratching each others backs.
Like, you are giving presents to each other not to give them the moneys worth but more as a thought.
And yes, I know you like to think rationally about these kind of things and just say "My time is worth more than that suckers!", it is just that not everyone are thinking only in terms of money and time needed to spend said money.

I guess you and I see the principle of the thing differently. I don't see it as bitch work, and I don't see it as "no apparent reason". Obviously I do not have all the facts, but if his cousin is as useless as he makes him out to be, there is a reason not to use him. And if the work needs to be done it isn't bitch work. It isn't like he is doing chores, he is doing maintenance.
I don't think being 24 gets you out of family obligations, I think it gets you more involved in them because you are more competent. But of course, the shed sin't falling down, and if he is busy this weekend he can easily say next weekend or whenever. The mother's tact is also lacking, but that may be a casualty of the ability to text with cc.

PS. Yes Dan, it makes you a bad son. It was a test. Your parents wanted to see if there was anything left of the boy they raised, the boy who, a few years ago, would have been mowing the lawn and crossing it off of the fridge door afterwards. I hope you can buy your parents new hearts to replace the ones you crushed.

Actually the son they knew would demand payment for mowing the lawn as a kid so nothings really changed LOLOL

I would make it abudantly clear that they do not plan my schedules.
I have people in my family try to pull this shit with me and it does not fly.
It has nothing to do with wanting or not wanting to help out your family. It's about common courtesy and respect for others. but I think most people here already get that
