Thinking of getting my father an iPod Touch but I don't really know too much about it. I just know it plays music, has support for a number of apps and games, and it can browse the web via wifi.
I'm most worried about whether or not it's intuitive enough for him as he's not the most tech savvy person when it comes to this type of stuff. I was thinking of getting him the Nano instead but he's going to be working at a university so he'll have access to wifi all the time so I figured that combined with the PDA like features of the Touch would make it worth the extra cash.
Any thoughts? Yay or nay on the iPod Touch?

At first I was one of those people who really hated iPods but after I a touch for my birthday I was actually pretty pleased with it. Having wifi is really nice and there are a bunch of pretty nice (free) apps. I vote yes.

the ipod touch has saved my ass numerous times its very easy to use and is fairly user friendly you can learn as you go, and its very flexible only thing is its a bit expensive.
|
Well iPod Touch can be pretty interesting. But if you're a cheap ass person who won't pay a single app like me, then it would be boring after a while since everytime I see the apps you have to pay, they're actually decent compared to the cheap no-cost free apps. And since I don't have much music (only 300), I haven't touched my iPod Touch nor even care to charge it (as it is dead) for the past 2 months... yes, it's buried within the deeps of my papers and unorganized stuff in my room.
However, I'll say Yay since it's pretty wicked when you first get it. Much better than iPod nano or anything below.

i would definitely reccomend it. it's very intuitive to use, and much easier to use than most devices...

If he has wifi access most of the time I would recommend it as well over the nano. I've had mine for quite a while now and it really, really comes in handy. Watching movies on it is cool too.

Can you commonly go out and find a working wifi that can be used?
Oh and of course the iPod touch can be jailbroken.. voids your warranty but I'd do it for the advantages :p

I've been pretty satisfied with mine. Kind of annoyed that I can't use it as a hard drive, or with media players that aren't iTunes, but other than that it's been good.

I suggest waiting until September 9th when the new one comes out.

I got one in april, jail broke it, and I love it. It's a music player, has internet, and my gameboy (if you jailbreak your ipod you can run emulators on it which is pretty sweet imo). It's expensive, but it's going to last me for a loooong time. It's also shiny and fun to show off.

When you buy an ipod, you support greedy corporatism. Get any other brand tbh, save money and support the competition ;p

I've had the first gen 32g touch since release and it really made me use it more often than my old Mini. It's very user friendly as everything's seperate (settings, music, photos, videos, you get the point). Using iTunes you can set it to upload specific folder(s) for videos and music so it's really simple to choose what you want to put. I found the wifi a bit iffy to use at school though, don't know if it's only me though.
free apps aren't that great (usually limited and buggy), but starting ~1.99 they're pretty good. Don't buy the dictionnaries though, they suck. I practiced a lot of poker and blackjack with cheap apps that worked well, checking the ratings and comments is probably the safest way to know what to buy or not buy.
oh, and to increase the lifetime I'd suggest buying that plastic screen protector and maybe a protective leather case or something. I mean to keep it clean and cute. Cause those things are invincible, really. Some dude at college was bragging he had dropped his iPhone 32 times, spilt beer on it a few dozen times and even if the thing was cracked everywhere it still fucking worked

Personally I am waiting for the Zune HD cuz its coming with an HD Radio which is pretty handy on the go. Plus the radio service is free so no payment!

I would definately go for it, it's really easy to figure out and it's pretty awesome generally speaking. Btw, props for being a good son

You could also check out the Zune HD. It's pretty similiar to the ipod touch, touchscreen player with wifi internet browsing. But, the Zune HD comes with a full featured web browser, HD radio, and a OLED screen. But it won't be out until September 15. The Ipod Touch's hardware is old by comparison.

IPODs and other proprietary media players are trash. look around and get another mp3 player.

I got an ipod touch (2nd generation) early this year and haven't regretted it at all. Incredibly cheap compared to getting an iphone, well at least that's the case in New Zealand. It just lacks the phone, camera and GPS, but othen that it's pretty much the same. Being able to browse using wifi is awesome. I use the wifi at my university and it works well. I use mainly free apps, like to do lists, and they work well. Interface is easy to use after getting to know it for a day. Keyboard might take a bit longer to get used to be but now I can type on it fairly quickly (certainly faster than pen and paper). I'd definitely recommend it seeing as your dad's gonna have internet access.

apple's likely going to make some new additions the ipod touch pretty soon, so if you buy it wait til the additions
