So long story short. My new roommate is a nice guy and it happened that we have ofc the common interest of the computer games. After a brief talk it turned out he is a total super smash bros melee freak and I introduced myself as a StarCraft disciple. The thing is I only know how his favorite game looks like so I couldn't quite understand his fascination.
To convince me how great his game is, he decided to show me some VODs in the net, but I didnt knew where and what to look at. Which brings me to the question - How to introduce an outsider to the professional gaming? Sure, we played some SSBM on his gamecube after that and I realized just how difficult and skill demanding this game actually is. It wasnt much fun getting raped, but in general I liked the game. The fact that I insisted to play with Pikachu couldnt help either But nevermind that, tomorrow its my turn to show what the competitive gaming is all about. The thing is thou, my roommate played BW when it first came out so long ago and all he knows about the game are the name of the races the units and the fact that you have to mine minerals and gas...
So, what is the best way to get him interested. I'm planning to show him some TvZ PvZ and TvP vods but I must pick the games very carefully. I dont thing some modern age stuff will be the best choice, because the games are very fast paced and he will lose track. I think I will go for some GARIMTO vs Boxer games, firstly because they are full of cute micro tricks and secondly the game speed is very slow so a new guy to the game can say "ahaa I see what he did there". The other problem is to explain the nature of match ups - with simple words so that he can understand what is important in the game and to which components he must pay attention. I dont want to use the word "metagame", so to put it simple
1. Which game will a new to StarCraft guy enjoy watching mostly? (give example like Bisu vs Flash on Katrina, smth like that)
2. Before playing each VOD I must prepare my roommate for what he is going to see, so how to explain each MU with maximum 3-4 sentences and simple words?
Its really important for me to get him into StarCraft cause I think I need just a little spark to ignite a new passion in his gamers heart.

show him some of boxer's micro. hey, thats what got me into competitive starcraft
|
boxer vs anytime on Neo Forte cheese =p i think he would enjoy watching anything with the fans going batshit insane and there being a lot of energy, with charismatic players playing.

yeah, and add the commentary too!

If he's into competitive gaming, definitely show him the pimpest play or other highlight videos. That's what got me and a few of my friends into competitive starcraft.

Haha that commentary actually made one of my friends decide to start playing starcraft. Show it to him and i'm sure he'll like it.

Show him Savior vs Nal_rA on Peaks, the long epic one --- it's one of the games that got me hooked when I was first getting into professional BW. Everything about that game is just plain awesome. I haven't seen it in a while, but I remember Nal_rA's reaver drops, Savior hiding hydras in ovies so they wouldn't get harassed, the elimination race at the end... so exciting. + Show Spoiler +
Then show him this game + Show Spoiler +http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCMVgZmmcEc&eurl=http

lol that must be the worst way ever ^^
since the tower defences lack so much compared to the ones in wc3 I bet he will just go "wow this sucks"

The best must be to show him highlights like pimpest plays.

My best friend of about 7 yrs was never really into starcraft (we played some back in the day, but once it became one-sided enough he lost interest). He and I are both gamers, we just aren't into the same genres. However, I linked him to the Chill vs. Combat-Ex because I thought that even if he wasn't a huge sc fan, the commentary would be entertaining enough. He watched it (and I re-watched it at the same time) and we lol'ed the entire time.
Yesterday, I was really excited about July vs. sKyHigh, so I said something to him through IM like "wooooooo 3 mins until July vs. sKyHigh!" (He hears me talk about it enough to recognize names and such.) Anyways, I was astounded when his response was "link?".
Day[9] may have turned my friend into a pro-sc fan, and that's pretty awesome.
Edit: tl;dr: Show him Chill vs. Combat-Ex.

Bisu vs Jaedong on blue storm or the recent Yellow vs Bisu on heatbreakridge.
The fiurst one have a lot of harrasment from P with big nice battles, drops and what not. The seocnd one is very intense as wlel with zerg droping and the AUDIENCE and commentators go crazy.

If he's played sc at all before casually, you should show him some highlight videos and hopefully it'll have that "wow! I had no idea you could play like that" effect. For example the "EPIC moments of Starcraft" video that recently came out.
Also I hope you get into SSBM as well =) It's a really fun and deep game.
