Age of Empires?
there's so many PC games out there that are entertain that don't require much graphics. Just go to your local mall. Also most of them are really cheap so you can just try all of them. I usually go around electric section and see many brand names that are old. most of the brand games are the "better" ones.

Oops didn't see edit. well if you don't want to pay for them then there's such a limited amount of games that are decent.

$10 (AUS) for Diablo 2, why the fuck not?
|
Soldat is pretty popular for this sort of thing. It's a sort of free, 2D Quake 3.

It's been mentioned, but none of us really like the idea of dying...then having to start over.

That's only in hardcore, and you don't have to play hardcore, lol. In fact, the "hardcore" option isnt even available until you beat the game once normally first.
I definately agree with diablo2, by the way.

Do you drop items when you die?

Um, ShotOnline (Golf MMO) is actually pretty fun. or Rappelz (MMORPG) if you're into that. Combat Arms (FPS) is fun too for a while.

No. The only thing you drop is a bit of gold, iirc. But you can run back to your body and pick it up again. The game is very friendly in that regards, you can also insta-exit the game at any moment and not die, even at like 10hp.
The game was fun back in the day, I'm not sure how enjoyable it would be now, but if you're playing with friends, I definitely suggest getting d2 and the expansion pack and finishing the game together a few times through the difficulty levels.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with D2. It's a classic.

How about Magic: The Gathering. Some people used to play it in the cafeteria all the time while I was trying to study. This was after-hours at like 6pm and stuff. Really really annoying. I don't know why they were in college. You could try that.
