About the whole changing behavior part: If you want to change some behavior your best bet is documenting an exact goal (write it down) and keep a daily check on if it's going according to plan (don't set any unrealistic goals). Making your plan concrete makes it much more likely to actually engage in this behavior, use rewards, not punishment to reward certain behavior, make sure to do it right away after you accomplished a behavioral goal, the maintaining behavior part is where it gets tricky, you basically need to prepare yourself for any stressful scenario that will make you fall back into the old behavior. Also check for underlying causes of negative behavior before you try to change it, people who can't quit smoking usually have stress factors that could be taken away for example which makes quitting a lot easier. I have to write a small paper on this subject for a personality/clinical/health psychology course.

If you feel like all you do is go to work, go home and watch TV, sleep, and repeat... You just need to find some new hobbies, maybe take up a fun side career that has to do with your hobbies and enjoy that. For example, take our very own forum gosu Chill. I don't know him well, but I do know he has a pretty stable job. It's probably got static hours, and he just does the grind daily. But I also think he's a pretty happy guy. Why is this? He has this whole second career as a StarCraft caster, which, despite it being voluntary, he obviously enjoys it a lot, and it spices of the routine in his life. You can really tell that he's very happy and enjoying himself when he does Team Liquid attack and these other activities. Sure, they're a lot of work, and take commitment, but that's what makes them feel like accomplishments (as I assume he feels the same, since he puts this stuff on his resume). If you feel like your life is a never ending circle, all you have to do is add some new things to do.

Surely it's worth it to take a moment now and then to appreciate the state of things and enjoy yourself, if that was actually what you're talking about. Oh, and if you really want to change something about your life, and can't decide what, go find a charity to donate a dollar to (unless you do that habitually already), or go kick a dog (don't), try drone rushing some noob.

"Just accepting" everything in life isn't humanly possible and I suspect that anyone who claims to is lying. That's ironic, considering we're indoctrinated from day one to be docile bodies. I'd say the average person accepts a whole lot of things that don't make much sense, and rejects very few.

Just to add something to the conversation, I think that you can easily change your behavior by taking small steps. For example, if you're going to try to stop playing starcraft, then start by finding something else to do, and slowly replace starcraft by your other activity.

Oh, fine, everything that happens happens because it was going to happen, is happening, and will happen. We're all bound by physical laws and have no say about how our brains, and we, behave. But if we pretend to have a thing called a will (be it free or otherwise), then we can pretend to make choices. Certainly these choices will be affected by things that cannot be described as being part of our "conscious decision-making," if that's what you mean. I don't think it's a critical aspect. Even if you choose apple juice over orange juice every single time, it's still your decision and you can, in principle, decide to change.

I am on that quest myself lately. All the great minds emphasize this and I think I realized their point. You REALLY need to know WHO YOU ARE. Try to ask yourself, Who am I? But do it seriously. Then think. Then ask yourself again. Once you know who you really are, and what you're about, the rest should be easy. Because when you know where you are right now, you just go from there, where ever you want.

How does one bring change and free themselves from their daily routines, habits, fears, failures, and inner demons and meet the road down the horizon? First you have to ask yourself what it is about your daily routine, habits, etc, that are causing you problems. Ask yourself what you want - money, friends, things, philosophical insight, more work, less work, prestige, inner peace, enlightenment - whatever. Ask yourself what you need to do to get what you want. Look around at other people who have what you want and see what they had to do to get it. Ask yourself again if you are prepared to do what you need to do to get what you want. Where's the problem? Do you not know what you want? Do you know what you want but not know how to get it? Do you know how to get what you want but don't want to do it? Do you disagree with the things you have to do to get what you want? If so, is there a way to realistically change what one needs to do - is there a different way to get what you want? There are two ways to deal with life - you don't worry about it and take things as they come, or you set goals and try to achieve them. Since you're worried about the whole ordeal, I'm suspecting you would fit into the latter category. The solution then is to use your brain - analyse your situation and evaluate your options. Introspection and self-awareness are all one needs.
