Blue Scholars
Sporting the classic hip hop lineup of one MC and one DJ and some hella dope beats a la Bay Area. There is a reason the hip hop duo is known for great quality music, it fucking ownz! This is no exception to the rule as the Blue Scholars tear down some walls and throw up some funky shit.
MCGeologic
This dude is cut straight from some old school cloth, he really likes to thrown it down lyrically rather than in his content. Reminiscent of De La Soul and Hieroglyphics style he rips on common subjects (love, life, parties and so on) but makes them personal through his talent. I like his lyrics and the way he portrays them but he could use a bit more substance to them, otherwise a fine MC.
DJ Sabzi
This guy really surprised me as he is responsible for all the music on the record and each track on both respective albums I have is just great. On their newest outing "Bayani 2007" he totally shifts gears from their self titled album, taking it closer to the Bay Area style I mention before. I would like to say these two have matching styles but I get the feeling that Sabzi just adapts to whatever is around him. A great DJ when Hip Hop DJs are far and few between in this genre.
Blue Scholars Self Titled
The first album I got from these guys was a real grabber for me, I instantly fell in love with it and let it spin in my car for months. Tracks like "Sagaba" and "Burnt Offering" were more artistic than most things I have been listening too in the past few years, and I loved it. This album was nothing compared to their next one but still is a great display of their varying styles. Definitely pick this one up if your feelin this next album...
Blue Scholars Bayani 2007
Holy fucking shit! This is in my top 3 albums for 2007 and with good reason, the intro leads slowly into the first track and from then on your hooked. "Second Chapter" "Loyalty" "50 Thousand Deep" and "Joe Metro" are just a few of the bumping tracks off this album. Like I said before their style moves much closer to a relaxed Bay Area feel and it is definitely a good fit for them. If your lookin to check these guys out grab this one first.
Overall: Blue Scholars are nothing to obsess over honestly, I love them alot and they are great Hip Hop for our time, but they are intermediate when it comes to the big picture. Of course this does not make their music any less enjoyable or beautiful so don't take that to mean they aren't worth your time cause they definitely are. On the second album Geologic picks up his substance in lyrics with songs like "Bring Em Back Home" but it doesn't make up for the startling lack of real content on their self title album, though it is still artistic. I would definitely recommend checking these guys out.
