So the second day arrived and I got my ID in which I clock in and out and then I was assigned to the "smalls" section. I was given a belt that I attached a small scanner on to, and then I put on my two fingers another scanner/reader than I moved over one of two-three barcodes on the packages. I basically scanned, sorted, then bagged then when full throw onto the conveyor belt. These bags were pretty big and could hold, depending on the size of the packages, 25-50 packages. My fingers are sore after messing with the zippers and pulling the bags which don't have any handles. But it was a cool experience nonetheless.
My supervisor was cool, at first when we were leaving the break room to get our scanners, and ID's I was a little intimidated, they appeared like drill sergeants. During the break one of them, ironically called Chris, walk up to me and ask me how was everything going. I said I was still a little slow but he said that he wanted me to go slow that way there was less chance of screwing the zip codes up. He said he had never seen a new hire being put straight into the "smalls" area because it was deemed more skilled/complicated.
At the end of my shift I was shown how to put the equipment back on the chargers, then told to keep the belt. So it looks like so far so good with UPS.
