Actually I think the show is pretty fucking hilarious. The 'shock' value or whatever isnt really there yet but I think the humor is just great.

first episode of season 3 was great :D

I just finished watching all of season two (I know, I'm a season late, but I kind of like it that way. I can watch the whole story all in a row. It kills the suspense a little bit (not much though), but I like having that instant gratification :p). Amazing season, satisfying ending too.
I'll watch the first ep of season three I suppose.

I watched the whole season of 1 Dexter just out of curiosity, but then at the start of season 2 I just couldn't stand so much dumbness anymore and stopped watching it.
Dexter = 90% lame soap opera drama + 5% police thriller/action + 5% innovative comedy
The only thing that keeps you watching is the curiosity to know what's gonna happen on next episode. Good shows don't need to rely solely on that. If dexter's episodes were independent from each other it wouldn't have half it's fans.
It's the kind of dumb written scripts where all characters are inhumanly dumb then most of the drama derives exclusively from these dumb people being dumb. The ONLY positive point in the whole series is the creative innovative idea of having a serial killer cop working on forensics. But even that loses many of it's potential when they put so much hypocrisy in the dumb confused mind of that character.
2/10

jesus ... could you be a harsher critic?
what are those other great tv shows you speak of?
|
The other characters on the show suck. That's the problem. Other than the girl with the kid there is really no point at all for the other characters other than bad story / bad dialogue / filler.

what are those other great tv shows you speak of? You talking to me? If so, House and CSI: Las Vegas would be two of the shows I love which would be great to compare against Dexter. When you put Dexter side by side with CSI you'll clearly see how dumb and predictable the stuff on Dexter is. And if you compare House to Dexter you clearly see how the dramas on Dexter are all caused exclusively from dumb people doing dumb stuff. Which, imho, isn't fun to watch.. it's just... dumb to watch.
To a lesser extent, Numb3rs and Medium are also comparable to Dexter in style (police thriller + peculiar differential character) but are also much more insightful and fun. (tho these two are not as close as good as House and CSI: LV).
None of these need to rely on keeping you curious on what's gonna happen on the next episode just to keep you watching. And are better than Dexter.

CSI Numbers medium House all blow compared to Dexter thx
|
VIB you really think Dexter is more predictable than CSI and House ? i'm a fan of House but it's about as formulaic as you will find in prime time. and then you go and say that these other shows don't need to keep you curious, but that's because they always end in the same way at the end of the hour long show. so what is dumber to watch, a mainstream show that uses the same formula over and over again each and every episode, or a show about an intriguing person full of self-revelation and unexpected plots?
|
I agree with you that the per episode flow of a repetitive formulaic series like CSI and House are more predictable than a non-linear one like Dexter in which every episode changes. But that wasn't what I was talking about, I was referring to the interactions between characters, plot and the mystery puzzle of each episode. The dumb <-> predictable relationship. Dumb characters are predictable because they always choose the dumb path. House often makes decisions that I could have predicted if I have though faster, but I didn't. He makes clever and insightful conclusions from the facts that are hard to predict because it was intelligent. In Dexter that never happens, the stuff that you cannot predict is because there is some information they're not giving you. When he tries to make whatever decision you can always predict that he will do something dumb or simple.
A good example of what I'm trying to say is comparing CSI: LV to CSI: NY. Both use the same repetitive formula per episode. But LV has a smart script, stories, intelligent characters with insightful comments and decisions. NY on the other side is just like Dexter: dumb scripts, dumb stories, dumb characters doing dumb stuff. So even tho both series are almost identical in it's formula, LV is much better than NY only because it's much more insightful. (of course "better" is just my opinion, I'm sure CSI:NY was made that way to reach a different target audience who might even prefer watching NY over LV)
Another point that I said that I didn't like on Dexter is that it's too much drama. House/CSI/numb3rs are 90% scientific puzzles, 10% silly drama. Dexter is the opposite. Well, some people like dramas others don't. I personally don't see anything interesting it which is why I dislike Dexter so much. I *specially* dislike Dexter's drama because it's consists all of dumb characters interacting with dumb characters doing dumb stuff. I don't like watching that.
This gets me a bit curious. Do YOU like that kind of drama? What's so fun about it? It's always "dumb people being dumb" -> "dumbness results in some problem" -> "story about the drama caused by this problem and how dumb people interact with it". I don't mean to offend or anything, I see lots of movies that use this kind of drama and get really high ratings by top movie critics. I just don't understand it, what's so fun to watch that?
(sorry for overusing the same word over and over, my english vocabulary is really weak )

I think Dexter is a great show, and comparing a lousy retarded show like Medium to dexter is an insult. Everyone doesnt like everything I guess, but I fail to grasp how Medium can even be watched, its such a lousy show.
Third season has started, and I hope the show picks up slightly, but either way its still great. Now all I gotta do is wait for Heroes and Entourage to start as well ^^
The shows im currently watching are :
Dexter Prison Break Heroes (when it starts) Entourage (when it starts) Generation kill (really great miniseries, alot like Band of Brothers actually) Eureka Psych (really love this show, I laugh every time Sarah Conner Chronicles Supernatural Rome (cancelled :/ ) Burn Notice (timefiller nothing more nothing less) Criminal Minds (kinda cool show, I got 2,5 half seasons left to enjoy Shark The Wire (great show, got 2 seasons left to watch Sopranos (Completed now, but if you havent seen it, I really recommand it
And the more "girly" shows I watch ;O
Greek Gossip Girl One Tree Hill Home and Away
And yes, I do watch alot of series, but thats what happens when you dont have a TV :D

Dexter's good without being brilliant.
I enjoyed the first season, but season 2 fizzed out horribly. The ending was dumb and contradicotory imo. =/
Nothing is quite as good when Entourage is on though. When's it coming back? I miss it more than I would sex.
|
It's a decent show but anything that doesn't relate to dexter himself sucks so hard it's cringe worthy.
|
Overview TV Series: "Entourage" (2004) Original Air Date: 7 September 2008 (Season 5, Episode 1)
So im guessing I will get it tomorow morning then ^^

I watched so much stuff
Simpsons(always good) Family Guy(owned) Dexter(yeh!) How I met your Mother(meh/yeh) First 4 seasons of Scrubs(meh) Entourage(weeee!!!!!!!) Arrested development(owns) Weeds(meh) Californication(yeh)
|
the series i enjoyed are:
house mc (though it repeats ifself a lot) oz (great, but it's lack of realism tires me sometimes) the wire (really good, ultrarealistic. I am the guy who cannot stand fantasy stuff at all for it's lack of realism, so "the wire" is the best show to me, add it's great directing, acting and other stuff, it's a 10/10) family guy (got tired after sometime because it's lack of a story and only stand-up comedy) the simpsons (same as family guy)
