It's like he is asking Melania for a golden shower.
He has no deep desire to end democracy in that moment, he just sees somebody who needs to do somthing for him, and his mind wandered to "just do it once, and you never have to do it again" to convince them.
"Hey babe, lets just try it in the shower! Only once, I promise you never have to do it again (if you don't like it)"
This is uncalled for and just plain weird. There are plenty of things to attack Trump on without bringing Melania into it.
I care about the image potentially existing in my head ><
And I can't help but lol at the notion of a
giant reality denial vortex
surrounding Trumps attempts to subvert the democratic process when there factually was an attempt made to override the legitimate democratic process, and that because the failed they first time we shouldn't worry about them having another go at it.
Yeah, the fascist definitely, definitely isn't the one who attempted a violent coup and tried to overturn the result of an election, resulting in damage to the Capitol, assault and even death of Capitol Police, and an attempt made on the life of Mike Pence, their own VP, because he didn't comply with the takeover scheme they concocted.
Trump would definitely respect the result if he loses this November, and would certainly leave peaceably in 2029 if he won. His track record wouldn't let you think otherwise.

Of course Fox News wants the debate. They'll get hundreds of hours of content for their network just talking about the debate before and after trying to spin everything that happens in it.
Even if Trump does terribly they'll happily spin how his performance was actually a win for him while running commercials for Ford trucks and Viagra.
Trump doesn't want to do it because he has nothing to gain from it. Just having the two of them on stage next to each other when his own campaign made the age of the President such a huge deal earlier in the campaign will be a loss for him. He'd need to absolutely wipe the floor with Kamala Harris just to make any kind of impact on the polls.
As it is, Joe Biden had one of the worst debate performances you can possibly have and the polls didn't move THAT much. Trump was still only narrowly ahead on SOME of them afterward.
If he couldn't get a decisive lead over Biden after THAT debate, then he stands to gain nothing from debating Harris. It could only end up bad for him.

I really don’t care, do you?
I rarely disagree with you, but i do care about the level of discourse. I joined TL for the StarCraft theorycrafting, but stuck around because I enjoyed reading the various political threads.

To be clear, I totally believe that trump will resort to crying "stolen election" again and will let others die for him in the most bizarre coup attempt since 2021.
He is also easily bored by the job of president, so he will bring in the absurd fascist "Project 2025" people as long as he can get rid of the lawsuits - and avoid paying taxes.
Jan6 weirdos storming the capitol is the sort of "helpless idiot" picture which takes all the seriousness out of what they attempted by ther obvious incompetence - (Still they got people killed that day).
Basicly the world was watching misbehaved kids..and waited for the adults to arrive and end this farce.
Would have Trump taken that that the mob had reached Mike Pence and sent him to the gallows? Yes absolutely.
He'd still deny to have led on the mob, but he would have taken his sweet time to not hand over the WH.
I just don't Like that fake MSNBC gravitas as if the Magats were even remotely smart or organized enough for a coup. This just hurts their credibility. I also don't want to overblow his excat wording at the moment, since I don't grant him the mental capacity of planning ahead, or the ability to follow a plan.
His political appeal is 100% insulting people his voters don't like. His brain is rotating through the "Professional Salesmen guide -1983".

During the next transition Biden and the people around him are in power and equipped with all the tools to deal with another insurrection, which is kinda insuring. A big part of January 6th being possible was the Trump administration not willing to respond because they kinda organised the whole thing.

If Trump wins, it is what it is.
the transition of power from biden to Trump, should it come, isn’t what people are concerned about (well, beside everything horrible Trump means.) it’s what happens four years later that is the question. January 6 2029, so to speak.
This might remain as an aberration and an outlier, but for the first time there's a Harris-Trump poll that actually shows a swing state that isn't roughly 50-50 (within a reasonable margin of error). A Bloomberg-MorningConsult poll has Harris at +11 in head-to-head, and +12 when third-party candidates are included, with a margin of error of +/-1, in Michigan: https://www.realclearpolling.com/latest-polls/president/general-election
It may be nothing, or it may be something. It's bizarre and different, that's for sure.

Was thinking about a Biden to Harris transition, fingers crossed. In that case the shennanigans of Jan 6th will not happen again because i'm confident the US government is able to deal with a situation like that IF it wants to, unlike 2021.
It's quite realistic the orange man will not be around in 2029. He's old, unhealthy and in mental decline. Not looking forward to the conspiracy bullshit around that event when it happens, but it is inevitable and will happen sooner than later.
Im not worried about civilians storming the capitol but more about Republicans trying to ratfuck the transition via Congress. Like the earlier linked idea of refusing/delaying swearing in the new Congress and trying to get the result send back to the states.
Situations that are technically not entirely illegal and thus much harder to stop.

It's indeed unfortunate that the US has an unreformed 18th century democracy with some amendments and just thinking about bullshit like that or the state of the supreme court makes me sick.
Harris is taking the lead in several swing states in a Bloomberg poll.
Can she gain enough momentum to swing Pennsylvania too?
I cannot fathom how this insane voting system has survived for so long. Any kind of campaigning in a large majority of the states is just about useless, for either party. Just focus everything on winning a small number of swing states, and you win. Just imagine if Republicans in NY and California actually mattered, and what it could have done to the party.

Agreed. Parts of the country have been unifying behind the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, though it's uncertain why red states would want to make it harder for conservative presidents to get elected. God forbid Republicans start listening to the people and come up with policies that are actually popular, rather than just skating by on the electoral college (or explicitly trying to steal elections).
J.D. Vance's viral weirdness and Donald Trump's viral creepiness have apparently been bringing out the worst in Fox News anchors, especially Jesse Watters:
1. Jesse Watters has been requesting videos of J.D. Vance having sex with a couch, to see if the rumors are true and because he doesn't understand the Streisand effect (the rumors probably aren't true, and Watters is skeptical, but Vance already looks up images of women with dolphins, and publicly shares ones that involve women being violated by dolphins, so who knows what other kinks Vance has);
2. Jesse Watters said that scientists believe that when a man votes for a woman, the man actually transitions into a woman (if my voting record is Obama -> Clinton -> Biden -> Harris, am I transitioning four times, or have I been stuck as a woman since Clinton's 2016 run);
3. Jesse Watters touched his very uncomfortable, very pregnant co-host's stomach without her permission, even as she and his other co-hosts on The Five told him not to (as he was assaulting her on public television, he remarked that he now knows how to shut her up);
4. A story that Jesse Watters told a few years ago is also being recirculated, where he stalked a female colleague while he was already married, secretly deflated his colleague's car's tires, offered to drive his colleague home because she was stranded (by him), and then used this fake act of heroism as leverage to date her (he said that his actions were justified because they ended up dating and getting married - she became his second wife - and then he later told people that he was merely joking about being a sexual predator).
Weird and creepy. Given that Trump and Vance are running for president and vice president, it sounds like Jesse Watters would fit in perfectly as their Secretary of State. Trump, Vance, and Fox News... This is the Republican party.
[1] "Fox News is facing ridicule online after host Jesse Watters demanded to see video of JD Vance making love to a couch. In a segment on Monday evening, Watters claimed that the online joke involving Vance and living room furniture was orchestrated by the Democratic Party before asking for evidence of such an act. “If you’re going to accuse someone of having sex with a couch, you better have video,” Watters said." https://www.dailydot.com/debug/fox-news-jesse-watters-jd-vance-couch-video/
[2] "“Now, I don’t see why any man would vote Democrat. It’s not the party of virtue, security. It’s not the party of strength. It’s definitely not the party of family. And to be a man and then vote for a woman just because she’s a woman is either childish, that person has mommy issues, or they are just trying to be accepted by other women,” Watters went on, before saving one of his more bizarre points for last. “I heard the scientists say the other day that when a man votes for a woman, he actually transitions into a woman,” he said." https://www.thedailybeast.com/fox-panel-loses-their-minds-over-white-dudes-for-harris-fundraising-call
[4] "Fox News host Jesse Watters made a bizarre on-air admission Monday, saying that he deflated the car tires of a 25-year-old colleague in order to be in a position where he could offer her a ride home. Watters, who was 39 at the time and already married, also said that the woman in question was Emma DiGiovina - who ultimately became his second wife. The two were married in December 2019. 'When I was trying to get Emma to date me, first thing I did, let the air out of her tires,' he said with a smile last week. 'She couldn't go anywhere, she needed a lift,' Watters said. 'I said "Hey you need a lift?" She got right into the car,' he bragged. After his co-hosts expressed surprise, Watters claimed that his wife was unaware of his antics to this day. Watters then appeared to justify the trick by stating that the pair are now married. 'It has a happy ending,' Watters declared." https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10730313/Fox-News-Jesse-Watters-admits-deflated-25-year-old-colleagues-tires-drive-home.html
Careful, DPB, you're just showing Trump that this is exactly the man to tap for his cabinet. You know, after everyone else quit or was fired or was nailed by prosecutors and tax authorities... #OnlyTheBest
Word is we should know who Harris's VP is by next week, and that it's likely to be a current state governor, specifically.
It's been interesting to see polls of Harris vs. Trump, and how she's been energizing her base and gaining ground, but I only expect it to look more in her favor once she announces her running mate. We've been evaluating her in a vacuum, but running with someone like Shapiro will make for a rounded ticket with lots to support for a lot of different voters. It will also bring into stark relief just how much Vance fucking sucks, since contrast between the two VP picks will be inevitable.
I wish the whole Fox News possé would get on the same plane and strand on a small island paradise in the pacific and never be found again.
I don't want them to die or get injured, they shouldn't starve, but just put as much real distance between them and humanity as they portrait every day to have removed themselves moraly from any spark of honesty.

Signs are pointing at Shapiro. I don't think many people know much about him, but being pro-police and anti-corporate taxes sounds about right for Democrats.
Shapiro specifically is proposing to slash the state's nearly 10% corporate tax rate to 4% by 2025.
To bolster public safety, Shapiro is pledging to boost funding for law enforcement and add more than 2,000 police officers across Pennsylvania.
Harris needs to be consistently polling ahead by the time the convention is over and in the polls. If she's still behind/tied at that point, I think Democrats will be in serious trouble.
