IF you want to get started with something, I reccomend modplug tracker! It's free and easy to use! It doesn't support VST plugins or anything but basically you grab any .wav (or lots of other formats) sound files and use them as instruments, and then you're off! I use Modplug tracker when I just want to write something quick and fun, (But with some practice you can create very professional sounding songs) when I'm composing something seriously I'll use a sequencer like FL studio. Using a sequencer like fruityloops will require more time and effort to produce something that sounds good For examples of songs made in Modplug tracker, goto Modarchive.org, all the songs there have been made by tracker

Logic is basically designed around sequencing and mixing, and it's a bit clumsy for audio editing (as opposed to Cubase, or Pro Tools)... but Logic's automation features, its ease of use with midi (matrix editor especially) and its plug-ins are WICKED. Almost every advanced music editing program takes a long time to learn, by the way, so keep that in mind when you're starting out.

Sasha uses Logic for sequencing his samples, and then uses Ableton to import those samples and edit them and mix them from there.
