Before reading this, I would like to let you know that English is my 2nd language, and I suck with grammars so please take into consideration. Also, it would be appreciated if you let me know if something is grammatically wrong or sounds hella weird.
I'm a bit cautious writing this because I know that people are very sensitive when it comes to the balance of the game. So, please think that everything is my personal idea and feel free to leave a comment if you disagree with my ideas =]
I did not really play LotV after it came out because I did not like the idea of starting with 12 workers instead of 6, I tried out campaigns and off-raced on ladder a few times a month, and that was it.
However, recently I figured out this game is quite fun to play, and as my MMR goes up, I realized that I cannot really win with my off-races, so I started to play Terran. Basically I'm new in this game, and I want to share my first impression of the game.
I played about 200 games with Terran on ladder. I changed my account name to Minou from FnaticRain cause I got sick of people asking me if I am SKTRain.
In this blog, I wanna talk about the different between WoL + HotS and LotV, little bit about, and how I feel about the game.
Starting with 12 workers prevents lots of early strategies such as 11/11 proxy 2 raxs and some kind of unusual stuff. I was good at these kind of stuff back in WoL so, I didn't like it at first. Yea but there are still decent amount of aggressive semi all-in style strategies, which makes the game more interesting.
I believe LotV is more balanced than other 2 previous series, it is more skill based and most importantly it's more fun to play.
TvT is my favorite match up since WoL, and I strongly believe it is all about pure skills.
There aren't not too many things to do in the early game, you can either go for standard reaper opening, or gas first. I rarely see people going for fast 2nd gas, skip the reaper, and do some kinda semi all-in 1/1/1.
You can do some sort of mind games with a reaper in early games, if you don't want to do it you can leave your reaper at the ramp with a marine. Losing reaper is crucial in early games, so be careful with that.
After the reaper phase, it's pretty easy to expect what your opponent is going to do, because most of the time your opponents are going to play defensively ex) tanks and vikings or try to harass with some kinda drops or banshees
Mid-late game is about your army positioning, try to take tactical spots with tank-medivac. Marines are significantly less important compare to WoL or HotS. (Back in WoL the most important thing in TvT was having a superior marine upgrades than your opponent and tanks were not as effective as it is right now).
TvZ is pretty much about which player has better macro. Early game is pretty much the same every time, 90% of the time, zergs will go hatch first then 8 lings, terrans gonna go for reaper expend and try do some damage or delay 3rd of zerg's(Most of the time, there is going to small micro battle.
Terrans gonna try to do some damage with hellions, banshee, tank drop or liberator and zerg players know exactly how to deal with it. So terran players have to harrass multiple places at a time, and if zerg falls behind in APM or Macro then they will take huge damage. Then, zergs gonna have map control with mutas, and Terrans gonna try do something before hive.
Late game is mostly ultra vs ghost, liberator and widowmine, and those are really hard to control for terrans(not sure how hard it is for zergs), so, I think zerg is slightly favored in the late game.
TvP, acutally I do not know much about it. What I think is most games are pretty standard. Terran goes for reaper expend, then probably factory or 2 more raxes, widow mine, or hellion drop to try to figure out what is going on, and liberators are quite hard to deal with for protoss players, so I see lot of protoss players going for stargate opening. Game changing thing in TvP is liberator and warp prism. Once adepts land on your base, you are basically fucked. Same for protoss. Once libertor takes a good spot, and there's no pylon for photon charge, its game over.
This is my statistic on ladder.
TvZ has been my worst nightmare since WoL, and it is even worse because I'm not a pro player anymore(I often fall behind in macro). TvT has been always best match up of mine, and TvP is a lot easier than it was.
Imo, TvZ is slightly favored for zergs. I'd say... (52:48) and TvP is slightly favored for Terrans somewhere like (51:49)
Besides the balance, people are less nicer than before, it is hard to see GG after the game. I was one of them, but now I'm trying to GG after every game and be nice to people no matter how angry I am =)
I don't play SC2 too much cause I have other things to do. I play about 5 games on weekdays and 10 to 20 games on weekends.
I'm doing pretty well on NA ladder so far, and I kinda wanna give a shot for WCS during the summer vacation. On the other hand, I kinda don't want to lol. I believe I did okay in WoL and don't want my career to be tarnished. I would like to stream sometimes, but I don't think my internet is fast enough to stream(Thanks to AT&T)
