Should I: -Get a 1440p FreeSync monitor and see how my 7990 handles it, upgrade to Fury X if I need more horsepower -Just go all in with 980Ti and 1440p G-Sync monitor Obviously the second option will net the best performance, but is it worth the extra cost vs the first option? I can hold 100+ FPS on high/max settings on most games at 1080p, for reference.

I can tell you that a single GTX 780 6GB runs Witcher 3 on ultra 1440p at ~30fps average and two in SLI ~60. If I did everything over again I'd go with 1080p instead of the 1440p I use. I can't really speak to FreeSync vs G-Sync, though.

1440p is going to be about double the load of a 1080p. 1.78x more pixels, but actual FPS drop seems to be a bit less than that - so 1080p would run likely ~1.65x higher FPS. It varies depending on the architecture a bit I can tell you that a single GTX 780 6GB runs Witcher 3 on ultra 1440p at ~30fps average and two in SLI ~60. Yeah, but i gained 50fps with a single 980 by disabling hairworks @ launch - that game gave me like 40fps at ultra, 140fps at med-upper settings at launch lol (it was sub-60fps on 1080p on the fastest single GPU at launch with everything up because of the amount of very inefficient settings) I'd rather run 1080p w/ a 980ti IMO - to run higher is to turn down graphics, run lower framerates or take the awkwardness and latency penalties of multi-GPU. You also force yourself into a cycle of aggressive upgrades to stay on the cutting edge needed to run new games on 1440p + high graphics and FPS, unless you cut back on one or more of those things.

My 7990 is still pretty strong at this res so maybe I should just get a 1080p FreeSync monitor? But then I'm locked into AMD GPUs...

It's not that hard to find games that you can't max and run at super high framerates - you can even add 2-4x msaa etc if you have the horsepower. Crysis 3 at 1080p with no AA only runs at ~100fps on a stock 980ti and that game is coming on three years old. You don't need the power especially if you're turning down the settings that hurt performance a lot, but it is helpful. Single GPU is notably better latency than dual IMO just buy 2016 flagship. You can do 1440p either way but it will mean turning down a lot of settings to get that ~1.7x FPS hit back on the demanding games (the beauty of a setup like that is running less demanding/older games at full resolution and FPS) 7990 and 980ti are fairly similar perf if you judge by FPS alone. 980ti is just a bit higher, single GPU, lower power, maybe more OC headroom, double VRAM, better drivers etc - all around better, but not as great as taking a big upgrade in performance at the same time

i5-2500k ASUS P8P67 motherboard GTX 705 Ti 16GB (4x4GB) G-skill ripjaws ram 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD 2TB WD Green 1TB Toshiba HD 500GB WD Black 550W Antec modular PSU Cooler Master Hyper 212+ cpu cooler generic dvd drive NZXT Lexa S case I'm selling it to a friend, so there is some flexibility in the pricing. Is $500-600 a good ballpark? It still runs great and can run sc2 easily, which is the heaviest thing he'll be using it for. Thanks!

Is this a good purchase as in I should take the bite? (I need to replace my laptop eventually ; but not replacing it now wouldn't kill me)

the GPU should be fine for low, but low end old gen and not great for raising graphics or other games. I don't think you should upgrade from one ~7 year old CPU to another ~7 year old CPU. If you're looking for low budget, you could get used sandy bridge or something like a haswell/skylake pentium.
