Cyro & bluegarfield, back when I just received my GTX980 there was a 15-20 fps drop in the Thief benchmark while streaming compared to not streaming. I remember that the drivers hadn't optimized for the new hardware encoder of the 900 series at release so it might be different today, but back then there was definitely a performance hit. Granted this was done using Nvidia's own shadowplay software and not OBS.

Hey guys!

I'm looking to buy a gaming new pc since my current one is 6.5 years old and doesn't run very well anymore.

What is your budget?
1000-1200€

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1920x1080

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Overwatch, h1z1, csgo, bf4

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Regular stuff, browsing, yt, school stuff

Do you intend to overclock?
I don't think so

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No

Do you need an operating system?
No

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
No

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
Nvidia GPU is preferred (mainly due to shadowplay), but not a 100% must

What country will you be buying your parts in?
The Netherlands

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
https://azerty.nl/

This is what I had put together myself:

https://azerty.nl/winkelmandje/winkelmandje/?legen=1&product[280735]=1&product[733773]=1&product[848742]=1&product[794627]=1&product[818369]=1&product[7517]=1&product[452330]=1&product[732664]=1&product[837548]=1&product[566778]=1&product[458903]=1

But I'm not sure whether the 6600K is worth it, if I'm not going to OC. Also not sure about the gpu/psu/soundcard/case/soundcard ;D

I could also go for something like this and spend less (not sure if 1228€ is worth it for me):

https://azerty.nl/winkelmandje/winkelmandje/?legen=1&product[280735]=1&product[733773]=1&product[848742]=1&product[794627]=1&product[818369]=1&product[7517]=1&product[452330]=1&product[566778]=1&product[837550]=1&product[810483]=1

I could even leave out the soundcard and use the one from my current pc x-fi titanium, I believe. Not sure how big the difference is between the cards. Also my old pc would be going to my brother so not sure if I want to take out any parts.

All input is appreciated!

Thanks for the info. I dont stream things so idk, only read up about the NVENC thing and it seem to be good.

6600K cant be overclocked on B150 motherboard anyway (?!?). If you dont intend to overclock anything, just buy i5-6500. However 6600k comes with higher clock speed out of the box, so you might want to factor that in if you want the most fps possible. 6500 should still handle your needs fine. Then use the saved money to get GTX970 instead of 960. sure 960 can run things fine, but 970 should do a much smoother job for ultra settings.

Also, onboard sound are good enough. unless you are audiophile/planning to do music recording/whatever, onboard sound can serve your daily basic needs, so you can save 80€ and skip the sound card all together.

not sure what is this "Azerty PC Montage 1 jaar garantie", but seem expensive for assembling service and extra warranty.

iirc, Sea Sonic S12II-520 Bronze is non-modular, so do reconsider if you have trouble with cable management. Can consider the M12II series for modular cable.

^an i5 6600 would run the same and save you 55 euro there (6600k would need a decent z170 board anyway, too)

it has the same effective clocks as a 6600k @ stock (200mhz lower base clocks and 200mhz more turbo's to compensate for that.. which should be up all of the time)

oops i had this open for like an hour and didn't see replies yet :D

@Cyro: I am actually still debating about the cost effectiveness between i5 6500 (3.2-3.6 GHz) and i5 6600 (3.3-3.9GHz) in non-oc case as compared to 6600k (3.5-3.9GHz). In my area the difference in price between the 3 are $30 apart. So going from 6500 to 6600 will cost $30 for the gain of 0.1-0.3GHz, or may be $10 per 0.1GHz gain (sorry math), which sound like quite a bad upgrade, the gain will be like 1-2fps??? Of course when going for maximum fps it's different story. but when trying to maximize value while not compromising too much of horsepower, the 6500 seem more reasonable to me. But then again, I am not sure how the 0.1-0.3GHz gain will actually affect real world performance.

The 6600 is likely never at 3.3ghz - the turbo ratio's should put it always 300mhz ahead. That's a performance lead of 8.3% to 9.1% which is fairly low but not completely negligable

Yeah, I tried digging benchmarks online and they show similar numbers. However I'm not sure if 8-9% benchmark difference will translate to noticeable fps difference at all, like about >= 5fps. There isn't any benchmark that do comparison with games, programs, etc it seem

Actually I have been delaying getting my own pc for so long still cant decide between 6500 vs 6600 and 380 vs 960 vs 380X. all are about $20-$30 difference T____T things are hard when there are many choices

FPS always depends where you are, 6fps at 30fps is a way bigger deal than 6fps at 100fps. 8% more FPS is 8% more FPS

i would say a performance difference of only up to ~10-15% (with the CPU being ~8%, it's not even that) is not really noticable but it is still notable, small gains can become very noticable when stacked

Thanks guys!

This is what I have right now:

https://azerty.nl/winkelmandje/winkelmandje/?legen=1&product[733773]=1&product[848742]=1&product[794627]=1&product[818369]=1&product[7517]=1&product[452330]=1&product[732664]=1&product[662598]=1&product[837550]=1

I still have some questions.

Do I need to buy a seperate CPU cooler, or is this stock 6500 enough?

And are there any differences between these two cases?

https://azerty.nl/0-1043-818369/fractal-design-define-s-.html (or another fractal case)

@vioqor14: intel stock cooler on 6500 is perfectly fine. It's just loud.

between the 2 case, functionalities are similar except the availability of 5.25" cd drive bay. They are visually different with side window. Cooling performance should also be similar, although the Define S should be more silent and slightly more well-built with more stuff equipped due to being top-end fractal design case. Go with whatever look nice to you

@vioqor: sorry but I have to ask, are you Gertjan? I know, this is the most random question out of nowhere and it's got nothing to do with your question, but still, I couldn't resist myself.

regarding your question(s), a stock cooler should be fine, but like garfield said, it's gony be loud, and (imo) a custom cooler never really hurts but throwing money out the window when it isn't necessary... It's up to you.

About the cases: The only "notable" difference I noticed immediately is the amount of space for a gpu that you can place in those cases, the corsair description mentions 425mm, the fractal 450mm, and the drive bay like garfield already mentioned but other than that... yeah, the fractal has like a gap between the plate where your mobo is attached to and the sidepanel so you can run cables through that space (possible with the majority of the cases nowadays but with the fractal it seems they've made the space even larger), I have a case like that (a Be Quiet case), imo, depending on how many cables etc etc etc.. that might be quite annoying. With the Be Quiet system, I had to screw my ssd in that space (so basically at the other side of the mobo plate), and with all the cables running through that space as well, me no likey. Do have to admit I didn't put in lots of effort to make it as clean as possible, but it's still a pain in the ass (imo).

So if the Fractal case is similar, and the SSD "slots" are at the back of the mobo plate, then you might want to go for a different case.

@pEcul!Ar yeah I am Gertjan.. haha wtf, who are you and how do you know me? ;D

And thanks But im probably going to let them assemble it (even though it costs 60 euro ;() cos im a total noob with that stuff and I dont know anyone who can do it for me or help me.. So im not sure how important the cable problems with the fractal case are for me.. i think the fractal cases look much better than the corsair one ;p

It's placid, but with one of the many nicknames and couldn't remember my old login so aye.. D: Been lurking on TL since the beginning more or less, at some point I decided to make an account, used it for 2 weeks didn't log in again, forgot login, etc etc etc.. same old shite, just like on tek9 & cg.

Well if Bob lives nearby I'm sure he could do it.

And with the Fractal case, well, if the SSD placement is really at the back, for me at least, it was more of a hassle than it should've been, but then again, the case I used for my other system is completely different so can't really judge the fractal by the experience I have with a different case.

Added you on steam (via Claudio).

@pEcul!Ar @vioqor: there are still drive cage for HDD and SSD in front of the case for Define S, so you dont really need to place the SSD at the back. Anyway the back panel cable management allowance is so spacious in Define case I really loved it when built one for my friend months back in the Define R5, easiest to work with so far. Define S is just R5 with more water cooling support and no cd driver bay, so should be the same experience

Somehow missed this comment. That FPS drop is a little hard to put into context (a 15fps drop from 200fps isn't a big deal but it's a massive performance loss if it's from 50fps) - the performance loss now should be minimal, i'l do a few quick tests

with an sc2 benchmark (CPU bound) ran 3x with and without 1920x1080, 60fps NVENC recording (on good quality preset) i got 144fps avg without recording, 140fps average with recording. Minimum FPS had a slight variance so not possible to say exact difference other than it was a few percent slower

Not able to test WoW because game capture won't work with it as usual - would have to download another game to do a gpu bound test but my previous results with maxwell nvenc were excellent (like 5-10% hits IIRC)

@Cyro:
Yeah for Sc2 it probably wouldn't do much difference, Thief was GPU bottlenecked even with the 980. I went from somewhere in the range of about 100 without streaming to 80 iirc which was a bit of a surprise to me, Shadowplay could have been the big factor though as that software was in early beta at the time.

Shadowplay has been in beta for like 3 years, i always use nvenc with OBS because it's better than nvidia's software.. but OBS has a lot of difficulty capturing half of the games that i play, which is unfortunate

100$, dunno, http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=558&item_id=065929 <- 160$ canadian for a brand new one so dunno, personally I'd not go for it when I know that for 60+ I can get a brand new one.

In terms of performance, it's definitely a "decent" upgrade, but it's the price they put on a used 270 that'd be a turnoff for me, again, because you can get a new one for 160$. It's a clearance sale on that website though.

Thank you for replying!

I just noticed that the kijiji ad says 270x (but in the message text, he wrote 270, not sure if mistake or not). Would the "x" edition change your opinion on the matter?
