I am an enthusiast of the BW scene, I'm pretty amazed about the TSL, so I will post what i think about the players acquirement divided into UPSETS and SURPRISES. I'm checking players match lists, so I'm not picking random thoughts from my ass. lol.
I know the TSL its not over and anything can happen, but until there...
Starting with the UPSETS: 1- Dreiven: I was expecting much more from him, but since his loses to Haypro he is doing really bad. He was the one who take Draco out of the WCG! 2- Paranoid: ok, maybe I was wrong, but I thought that he is one of the top ten foreigner players. 3- Notforu: WTF? after winning against mondragon he is the #41? Is ZvZ a luck based match-up or what? 4- Idra: come on, the guy is going for the ESTRO team, but can not even take a top ten spot, not even an A-? 5- Gentleman, Horror, G5, ACE, Gohan, Incontrol: hmm, they are not as good as I believed before.
Before any flame, keep in mind that these people listed can be, off course, not taking the TSL too seriously. So, if it is the case for any of them, just ignore what i wrote. Also some players can be playing too much against Koreans, so it can be the reason for a bad placement.
Now the SURPRISES: 1- Draco: this is the most WOW! WTF? the guy was completely inactive(AFAIK), but he is still able to be top 5 foreigner? It must be a gift! 2- White-RA: this guy has hundred of games against PROgamers(auto-loses) and he is still top ten. 3- hanniGan: i bet 5000 dollars that no one would even mention him in the top 100 before TSL begins. 4- Dinot: i know its early to mention him here, cause like many others he can only be in the top for few days, but anyway he is #2 at moment, with lots of wins against old know names. 5- Testie, Smuft and Leg: retired players doing well. Not so well as I wanted to see, but still good. 6- TT1 and yayba: didn't know they were good enough to be listed in the top 20.
I would also like to congratulate mondragon for his acquirement so far. He is not a surprise or an upset, but THE #1 out there. The one to be beaten, the one who showed skills, playing against all the top players in the foreigner scene.
Thats all! Maybe I will make some updates at the final of this phase of the TSL.

white-ra is the real surprise for me.
An in-shape Draco would be a reasonable favorite to take first spot on the ladder, even out of shape hes doing well, but he learned a lot in korea (just watch his first games back, amazing rape) and so I think its just a matter of losing the rust
|
Dunno about the rest but Idra said in his interview that he doesn't really care about his spot number. His goal is to just make top 16 if it's not too much of a bother, otherwise he's fine with top 48. Here's a response from Idra taken from Rage's interview with him...

Paranoid is definitely a top foreign zerg, he's just not putting any effort into it... that's generally how rafa is about these things, out of insecurity or true carelessness I don't know.
IdrA only has 1 hour a night to play ICCup after practice so that's basically all there is to that.
I'll stop there before I start flaming on kids that want credit for dodging Koreans and bashing their f lists.

... It's a ladder, people are just playing to qualify.
The judgments on how good each player is should come from the quality of their play and the circumstances, not their place on a bloody ladder.

HEY!
I'm not that bad I just play more koreans than anyone _ever_.

I just want to quote that:

skew: beat mondragon, at least in your dreams, before you say something like that. He has wins against DRACO, white-ra, xiaozi, strelok. Beat one of them too, just like him.
besides that, dodging koreans in a PRIZING TOURNAMENT is, at least, a good idea.

well, I will add that statement to the topic. dont want to be unfair.

I think at this point the only upsets and surprises we can get are those who do and don't make the ladder. We'll have to wait until farther along in the TSL to really get a good picture of the players.
PS: are you in the TSL incontrol and skew?
|
incontrol = TSL-redeemer skew = TSL-boxerz
upsets are these people playing against koreans or not putting the effort required to be on the top. for them i can only say WAKE UP! there is a HUGE amount of money in the table!
|
I've been impressed by how JF and XiaoZi have been doing, playing and beating or breaking even with the same koreans that others are getting beaten by.
|
I don't understand the issue with Mondragon dodging koreans on iccup, Koreans aren't allowed to partake in the tournament so why should he bother playing vs Koreans if the tournament will consist of only non-koreans? Seems to be the smart thing would be to play the top48 players in order to condition yourself to their style.

He really is an amazing player, and I don't see how one could be disappointed in his performance at this stage.

edit: i just realized how stupid it was to actually try to make a point to you, so i retract. have fun in your brain.

skew, you have only played against white-ra and cloud from the top 20 players. sorry, but you cant flame mondragon. i think you are a good player, but you should play more against the top players, thats all.

Gotta say I'm surprised about Idra as well. What happened? He was talking about being one of the top contenders for the TSL but he's looking kind of bad right now.
Looks like you can remove TT1 from the list by the way.
Go legionairre, I'm sure he'd have a shot at winning the whole thing if he got into shape again, same goes for nazgul, testie and smuft.

We are excited to see a new improved Idra for TSL. We have so few Terrans! Idra: Thanks. Ya I'll qualify, I don't have time to cherry pick or work my way into the top 16, but if I get close to 48th ill start playing more.

a lot of people u mentionned in upset are inactive, they are not bad, they are just inactive
Its like strelok, he won the 1st week tournament then gain a huge boost and sit down one week with a record of 63-20 and then when he was a bit on his way out he re-started playing.
Dreiven yes WTF ?
