It has now been four and a half year since the release of Starcraft2 and the dwindling interest and playerbase is evident. The reason as to why is easy to see. Starcraft2 is so casual unfriendly a game can be. Micro units in battles is probably the easiest and funnest thing you can do in an RTS and blizzard for some reason wanted lightningfast battles in sc2 because "esports" which only produces anxiety and stress.
Blizzard tried to solve this by introducing a bunch of useless features for casuals in HoTS which ofcourse didn't work. Playing for decals is fine and all but if the core gameplay is not mad fun then you will quit the game sooner rather than later unless you are a competative person who is obsessed with improving.
Blizzard is trying in LoTV (their last chance) to introduce more micro based units and thus hoping the game will become more fun again. Sadly this will not be enough because battles will still be decided in 5 seconds due to the sick dps and low health and exceptional pathing and clumping of units.
Most of you from teamliquid will probably not agree since most are competative here but none if my irl friends would ever stick with sc2 due to this and why would they? Its so much more relaxing and fun to micro in League of Legends where if you make a mistake its not the end of the game yet that game is still highly competative. Same thing back in wc3, many of my friends like that game because it didnt stress them out completly due to the higher health and lower damage of units which leave room for lots of micro which is the highpoint of most RTS.
To save sc2 and make it GROW again Blizzard NEEDS to increase unit model collision so its not the most efficient way to clump up your entire army which will lead to more spread out armies and more skirmishes = a much better gameplay, less stress and higher skill ceiling. They need to reduce dps across the board, seeing 2 max armies battle should be an epic and interesting back and forth battle with reinforcements coming in but in its current state; Lots of explosions, one army melt and the battle lasted 5 seconds. Starcraft2 feels to me like a game of Tennis, only that its sudden death... First one to miss instantly loses the game...
Ofcourse Blizzard needs revamp the economy and mining efficiency and make it worthwhile to have 6+ bases. Without these changes this game has reached its peak already and is gonna fade away right after LoTV. Im suprised sc2 has lasted as long as it has. I just can't understand how the people at blizzard who is supposed to be the best in the industry didnt see this problem at wol beta and not even for hots. They seem totally clueless.
To Clarify: The game is not too hard for casual in its mechanics. Casuals don't need to master every mechanic to enjoy the game. The game is simply not FUN enough for casuals because casuals and new players are mostly interested in the battles and microing units and feeling awesome doing so (which is again proven by LoL). They don't care at all about complicated build orders or timings and such. I would say Broodwar is more fun for casuals than sc2 for the simple fact it has more room for micro. Casuals fighting casuals in broodwar didn't need 300 apm to enjoy a game.

Interesting point. I think it has never been brought up so far. Never as in 100000 times.

I have not been involved in the scene since HoTS so i have missed a couple of posts. And if it has been brought up so many times then there must be some truth in it? =)

There were huge posts that also showed how blizzard could change SC2 and examples with the help of the editor with increased unit collision size and such, you might want to read those. I agree with the general idea of imprvoving also core mechanics, but I do not agree that SC2 is dying. Keep in mind that the units are balanced around the mechanics as they are, a complete rework would imply a consecutive necessary complete rework on balance, that is nothing blizz will do I guess.

the simple and cold truth is that 90's game design was dope and post 2000 we entered a different world when the gaming industry became the widest form of entertainement around the globe
the very core of the game design job changed completly
people that designed starcraft also wrote the game code whereas now it doesnt work at all this way
everquest destroyed the blizzard that was RTS king

You get somewhat used to that thought once the game is ten years old.

I think most of us hardcore brood war fans knew, after playing less than a few months, that this game was not going to be as popular. Blizzard killed the StarCraft pro scene in Korea and it's dying an extremely slow death. Should have just not made SC2 and let Kespa handle things. GOMTV fucking blows.
Blizzard destroyed something beautiful.

The argument uses about the same amount and quality of evidence as this one.

Balance is perfect rn. I'd say HotS right now is more balanced than BW ever was. It's more of "how do we shake this game up to make it even more entertaining?"

SC2 is not gonna be saved... all the skilled people at blizzard got promoted to some bullshit titles and dont need to work anymore and they hire they new hotshot designers with their head up their asses who thinks they know best... just look at diablo3 what a fuckin travesty.

IDK why people keep talking shit on diablo, have you even seen any gameplay for RoS? Most people agree that the game is in a good state now.

actually in Broodwar a new or casual player get's trained so hard to just focus focus focus on mechanics (because they make sc2 mechanics look easy) so most people dont micro too much at the very beginner level. It's just not cost effecte to "overmicro" every small fight, when your 2 base 80 supply 2k overmins xD
besides: yes sc2 bad gaem And no Gecko, i did, the fuck, not get used to it! You did and look where it brought you

sc2 is great. but the world has changed. gaming has become huge, which means that the number of so-called casuals has also extremely grown. those casuals play to relax. sc2 is a very hard game, so is broodwar. there are tons of games out there that aren't as hard to learn as starcraft. When sc2 came out in 2010, it was was the biggest game of the world, which it remained for about 1,5 years. After that, LoL, Dota and CS took over. Is that a problem? No, it is not. The WCS finals had great viewership, and as another guy here has already stated: The game has never been balanced better. Does it have design flaws? Of course it does. So does BW.
Why can't people just relax and enjoy the games they like?
