I know they've been generally recommended on here and on other places, the only thing that's giving me pause are poor reviews on newegg due to build quality issues/keys malfunctioning. Is this a real issue or is this one of those cases where the only people reviewing the thing are people who've had it break? The one that's usually recommended is the "quickfire rapid". Do you know if the quickfire pro is any good? Occasionally I find it on slickdeals for about $50 after rebate. I haven't found any deals on the quickfire rapid though. I've used the QF Rapid, QF Stealth, QF Pro and QF TK; I prefer the QF Rapid out of them all.
At least in my experience with my old QFP, its quality is sub-par compared to other CM keyboards. Not sure if they've changed manufacturers since it's introduction (iOne), but if they haven't I'd generally say it's an okay buy if you can get it for pretty cheap. Don't buy it at full price, you can spend that on better keyboard.

I was under the impression that the Rapid and Stealth are the same just with different keycaps no?
|
They are. Not sure what I was writing exactly when I typed up that post; I'm really sleep-deprived from all the studying I've been doing for finals week. Although for the most part what I said about the QF Pro holds true if iOne is still manufacturing them.
I rarely visit TL anymore so this might be already known, but for those who haven't seen this in the past few months the world's first mechanical keyboard with RGB leds is coming in the latter half of this year! Something to look forward to for anyone that's a LED enthusiast.

If "fully programmable" means you can switch the color of each single key anytime you want, then working in emacs will be even more awesome. Fully transparent blank keycaps required!

Anyone in the Bay area know where I can get mech keyboards? :D

Elitekeyboards.com is based out of Los Alamitos, not the closest thing, but if you find yourself in the LA area for whatever reason you can walk in and take a look around. Otherwise there may be a micro center or something out there. The one near mine in Minneapolsi started stocking Ducky's and some other boards recently.

Just got the CM Storm Stealth with blues in, gotta say the difference from browns to blues is greater than I expected, a greater bump and greater stiffness than i expected. Loudness of the click was exaggerated to me as well I feel, it isn't nearly as loud as I was expecting them to be. Board itself seems solid, although I don't like the braided cable, I have it on my G9X and the braided part started fraying. Overall very pleased, maybe it's just the change of pace but I like blues a lot more than browns.
I find typing without bottoming out easier as well.
|
Yeah I have MX Browns, and even though I'm happy of having a "premium" board Filco I am kind of disappointed of having to bottom out my keys and would much rather prefer blue switches.
|
I miss the days when it was easy to find Filcos at a reasonable price, a couple years ago when the mech keyboard thing was really first taking off I'd see them on Amazon for like $125 USD all the time, can't find any under 180-200 now.
But yeah blues are so much nicer, the only time I could see myself using my browns is if I need it to be quieter, although personally I don't feel like the click of the blues are that loud, might even be quieter than bottoming out Browns although some people might find the clicking noise more annoying.
Another thing I find dumb about the Stealth is that it came with free red WASD keycaps. They printed the letters on the side like they should but put stupid up down left right arrows on top of the keys. It's a stealth keyboard, what's the point in doing that? I wasn't going to use them anyway, I prefer an all-black keyboard, but that seems like dumb design.

Which is the best keyboard that is the most quiet? My buddy has a Filco that is pretty good, but its too fucking loud and the keys are way too high.
For me, I like Microsoft Standard keyboard because the keys are lower and it's quieter, but the feel isn't as good as a mechanical one.

If you like something where the keys don't move as much, you probably won't be happy with mech. There's other very good styles of keyboards like "scissor switches" that also work well in reducing typing errors and stuff.
Cherry has this one for about 20 €:

It's not mechanical, but it's perhaps as good as normal keyboards can possibly get. It's not gaming and does not have n-key roll-over. I don't know what other keyboards from them have the same technology for the keys.

I'll show you the one I have that I like a lot, but is kinda fucked up
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-ca/p/comfort-curve-keyboard-3000/3TJ-00002
It's got a huge "hill" in the middle that makes it weird. I didn't like it at first, but now I do.
The thing I don't like about most keyboard is the F1-9 keys are too small as I need larger ones close to the 1-0 keys for my games. But I don't think any company does that.
I like the feel of mechanical keyboard, but the keys are too high (does that make sense?) and require too much effort to press for the style I type and play. I also like the sound but wish it was a bit muffled as it can be pretty loud with its clicking.
Am I just absolutely screwed in terms of preferred keyboard?
That cherry keyboard might be a bit too much like a laptop which is not what I'm after >_<

The mech keyboard you tried, what switches was it using? You might like the other ones.
There's the possibility to put rubber o-rings under each key. That will muffle the noise from the keys hitting bottom.

Ergonomics are fun, I wish there were more functional, mechanical ergonomic options. You do have some options, in that you can buy little O rings to put under the caps and dampen the click of the switch no matter which switch you went for.

As far as function keys that are close to your numeric keys, the Noppoo Choc Mini, is the only board I have seen where the function keys are directly in line with the numeric keys

The Noppoo is on top in the photo above.
The key bit may be where you run into a bit of trouble, I'll again lobby for my Noppoo which is comparatively low profile in terms of the height of the keys, but I don't think there is anything that has those... chicklet style keys for lack of a better term, that are common on Mac and other more modern boards.

It's still too "tall" meaning the keys actual width is too straining for me

So what you're saying is, you want 25% width off a 75% keyboard. I don't think I've ever seen a keyboard smaller than 75% having a function row.
