makes more sense, but doesn't cause as much drama, so lets go with your version
What would the ranking be based on in that case? Something objective like WCS? A quick look at WCS EU reveals that this cannot be the case, as premier league players like Snute and TLO are lower ranked than some 4-5 Koreans that just made it in the WCS EU challenger league this season. So yeah, the groups are obviously fixed, at least when it comes to spreading Koreans as thin as possible over all the groups.
Logically there would be 2 group winners and 2 group runner ups in each group in the 3rd group stage, but maybe these groups will fixed too? I wonder how many (if any) foreigners will be left in the tournament after the third group stage. We shall see.

are we really going to complain about groups being made in such a way as to try and avoid good players knocking each other out early on?

I think the question here is, if you want to achieve that good players aren't knocking out each other early on, exactly how you define who are the good, better and best players? Also, we got to talk about something before the tournament starts!

'Koreans = good, not Koreans = not good' is a pretty safe way to do it, I'd say!

Remember that Vortix made it to game 3 in a bo5 vs jjakji! Certainly a good player, isnt he?

Yeah, Korean flag = top seed appears to be the case, the rest I seems rather random? I don't know, this approach feels a bit... boring perhaps? A different design could have put all PL players in the highest ranking group, challenger league players in the next and qualified players for challenger league in the third and then the rest (if there are any). I think that would have been more interesting, although by and large it wouldn't change much, but at least it would give a bit of a recognition to players like Welmu, TLO, Snute and Bunny, who now appears to be lower ranked than players that just now made it to the challenger league. I think the organizers made it easy for themselves simply. In any case, later today we will see who is to boss! Looking forward to it!

I personally feel that XMG got screwed especially hard with the teamkill, since Ryung is likely to take a spot (unless he fucks up), which means 50% of the roster is gone in Group stage 2.
Snute and Hero should be fine in their group, but likely Ret is going to get eliminated. Then again, I don't want to sound like an asshole but there was a good chance that Ret could have been eliminated in Group Stage 2 anyways.
