Awesome groups, I'm so excited. Its too bad there are so many bye's this year though, last year we had like 90 players out of 96 and it was epic.

not enough players so basicelly, almost eveyrone in stage 1 will also play in stage 2

Finally some Jaedong action.

These groups leave a lot to be desired, the talent pool is awesome, and I am hoping Impact goes deep, but I feel like there are more clear favorites for each one than you generally see.

why isn't Flash competing in these tourneys? Like DH and others

Lol now Liquid even have teamkill in the first group stage. This is some next level bad luck

Thank goodness Group H is a two-bye group, otherwise we would have had a truly tragic teamkill.

Because if he has to play more than one pre-determined map against one pre-determined player with a week's advance notice to practice, he's not even good enough to earn a seed into Stage 2.

can't imagine a good group stage 2 for me .. really...

Easy groups for Jaedong and TY. Glad to see it!

Cool groups! One Korean too many for the perfect symmetry, Mr. Monk would be really upset with this, but thanks to YearOfHarstem i suspect it will all be all right in group stage 3.

Two team liquid team kill groups :S haha
and with TY in one of them...

Ofcourse, my two fav players in the same group, Snute and HerO -.-

Really? They clearly doctored the groups so that there would be one high profile Korean per group and no avoidable shocking early exits, and yet there are TWO Liquid Teamkills. D:

^ ya, it seems like they fixed the groups. Isn't that umm bad? lol.
hmm I can see all the Koreans making it out of their groups lol
|
or you know, all the koreans have the highest seedings when they do the group drawings
makes more sense, but doesn't cause as much drama, so lets go with your version

What would the ranking be based on in that case? Something objective like WCS? A quick look at WCS EU reveals that this cannot be the case, as premier league players like Snute and TLO are lower ranked than some 4-5 Koreans that just made it in the WCS EU challenger league this season. So yeah, the groups are obviously fixed, at least when it comes to spreading Koreans as thin as possible over all the groups.
Logically there would be 2 group winners and 2 group runner ups in each group in the 3rd group stage, but maybe these groups will fixed too? I wonder how many (if any) foreigners will be left in the tournament after the third group stage. We shall see.

are we really going to complain about groups being made in such a way as to try and avoid good players knocking each other out early on?

I think the question here is, if you want to achieve that good players aren't knocking out each other early on, exactly how you define who are the good, better and best players? Also, we got to talk about something before the tournament starts!

'Koreans = good, not Koreans = not good' is a pretty safe way to do it, I'd say!

Yeah, Korean flag = top seed appears to be the case, the rest I seems rather random? I don't know, this approach feels a bit... boring perhaps? A different design could have put all PL players in the highest ranking group, challenger league players in the next and qualified players for challenger league in the third and then the rest (if there are any). I think that would have been more interesting, although by and large it wouldn't change much, but at least it would give a bit of a recognition to players like Welmu, TLO, Snute and Bunny, who now appears to be lower ranked than players that just now made it to the challenger league. I think the organizers made it easy for themselves simply. In any case, later today we will see who is to boss! Looking forward to it!
|
I personally feel that XMG got screwed especially hard with the teamkill, since Ryung is likely to take a spot (unless he fucks up), which means 50% of the roster is gone in Group stage 2.
Snute and Hero should be fine in their group, but likely Ret is going to get eliminated. Then again, I don't want to sound like an asshole but there was a good chance that Ret could have been eliminated in Group Stage 2 anyways.
