Last time I went to China, I got terribly, massively sick from the water I ordered at a restaurant (dumb I know). Don't get sick and be unable to play to your full potential TL! I've been to China numerous times and had never experienced this. Probably it's just the water from that particular restaurant.

Great blog! Some tips for Shanghai:
1) Air quality downtown can be sort of dodgy but shouldn't be too terrible yet because it hasn't hit June/July when the temperature raises to boiling the mirages shimmer in the air. I kid you not. If any of you guys are sensitive to air quality and stuff, you can pick up one of those white mask thingies if it helps you.
2) Vegetarian dishes..... Is Bulba vegetarian or pesco-vegetarian? If he can eat fish, it should be fairly easy to get stuff especially since Shanghai has a lot of seafood. Of course their pork chops are better, but those aren't fish >.>. If he doesn't eat fish, I'd probably stick to shi fan (rice porridge) with some pickled vegetables/steamed vegetables. You should be able to get that a lot of places. Fried rice also should be safe if you tell them what to leave out. If he likes spicy food, suan la mian (sour/spicy) noodles are typically vegetarian and come with some kind of green leafy vegetable depending on the restaurant/food stall. Gan bian si ji dou (Dry stir fried beans) are also quite nice and can be made without meat (some places add ground meat, some don't, but that's easy to fix). If he doesn't hate tofu, there's a lot of fried tofu/vegetable things out there. Hope that helps! Also vegetable buns!!! And if everything else fails, super cheap chong you bing (scallion pancakes) that you can buy at any random food cart for like 10 cents lol. You probably might be able to find some places that have vegetable dumplings as well. Oh yeah, ca ye dan (tea eggs, or eggs that have been boiled in a mixture of spices and tea, really good) can be bought from most food carts and should fulfill protein requirements if Bulba doesn't like tofu
3) Bottled water only from convenience stores should be fine; However, bottled water sold off the street is sometimes not actually bottled water >.> In restaurants, unless it's one of the nicer ones, it's probably better just to get some variety of tea (jasmine/oolong/etc) since that's boiled. Usually ends up costing less too, haha.
Good luck over there, and stay healthy! Hope you guys all have a safe trip
