Finally got around to hosting my own website through my own web server. I always was really interested in doing it beyond the proxy I hosted in high school to browse wow.com lol. I plan on using it for a platform to expand my home business and android apps. Just so excited =D, ended up only costing me ~30$ a year since I already pay for internet and I'm using a slightly older machine to host the actual server. Hell maybe I'll mirror files if anyone needs me too.

Oh cool, you're just hosting it at home then? Much cheaper than paying for a virtual server and managing it remotely, as well as it's physically right there so you can tend to it if there's any kind of outage.
When I worked at a local datacenter last year they gave each of the techs our own virtual server to do w/e with basically and it's pretty fun to just tinker around with it.
Running a Linux platform or Windows?

Windows. Im looking to kind of emulate a corporate hierarchy as much as possible in networking and security without having larger machines like you were talking about. Thankfully i wont be installing a cc/payment system except through paypal so that way i dont have to mess with the ssl and https stuff. Right now its just hosting a blank template for my pc repair biz.But since i have a few sub domains under my personal one i may lease it out to my friends to host their blogs. Also hooray for salvaging an old pc in addition to hosting my web server it also hosts my filezilla server, plus any lan game servers i need it too.
Just got done actually jacking around on jedi knight ii jedi outcast since them releasing the source code caused me to dig my old cd out. Also remote control it only after getting it setup made a snapshot using acronis and then removed all keyboards mice monitors to save room.
