(of course there are exceptions in korea for like schools and people who must work together...but random get togethers, if a korean finds a new acquaintance of the opposite sex unnattractive conversation just aint gunna happen) nor will you ever see a hot korean girl with a fat friend or an ugly friend. you see this all the time in the states. theres a big black fine line in korean culture between the ugly and the beautiful. koreans dont spam world events and crimes on the news non stop like in usa too...its mostly whos hot and whos not, no one gives a fuck about north koreas nukes, they just wonder what 600k car Han Chae Young's new rich old husband bought her as a marriage present. I sense a lot of bitterness... but if you what you say is true, I honestly did not realize that any country could be more shallow and superficial than the US is right now.

i stated facts. of course there are plenty of nice people but in comparison to other countries, as a resident here for 3 years, i can definitely say its astoundingly different than the states. koreans also care way more about money than other cultures. (this is because they are now just developing and succeeding as a nation when not so many years ago their country was in poverty). they used to NEED IT BADLY....but now that the poverty level is decreased drastically as the country is on the come up it doesn't mean that need and desire for it is no longer in their blood. the poverty shit is also why koreans always talk about what food they ate as casual conversation EVERY TIME, also why korean mothers force their kids to eat shitloads, and also why girls love seeing a man stuff his mouth with meat, or even like feeding it straight to their mouth. edit: superficial and shallow are completely different things. i know korean people who are superficial as hell but at the same time completely genuine nice people. weird.

Superficiality doesn't surprise me. As one of the most academic countries in the world, they push you to strive for obstacles brought on by competition within such a small country, and culturally, it just developed as a sense of respect to your elders' wishes to do so. But this hybrid of western/eastern culture has brought forth mutations. Materialism, idol worship, and B sitcoms/dramas all developed from biased bullshit, I mean after all, unlike USA, this is a relatively homogeneous country. You are not taught the virtues of Western idealism, you are taught to be enforced upon. You are taught where instead education defines life, and not the experiences that follow it. School, work, and discipline. Nothing else matters. I mean hell, whole fucking relationships are developed on class status. Rich people will get whatever girl they want, money > personality + virtue when it comes down to it. Money is created by a foundation a person has put on himself, either inheritance or education. fuck, it just makes me mad, when I hear stories where a kid gets beat up by his mother just because he didn't study hard enough. These kids grow up soul-less, and sometimes go on to being extremely superficial, by the way they've developed.

Nope, some of them don't and most of them that don't are easy on the eye... have you ever watch a game? Edit: Rekrul, I just read your posts. Thanks for your input. Somehow that's the message I was aiming at when I wrote what I wrote... but it was just a hunch, as I've never been in Korea. Most of those girls that cover their faces seem to be ashamed (more than shy) of showing their faces to the camera. Pity. On the other hand the few ones that show themselves display a defiant attitude to the camera... coz they usually are pretty. It's kinda bizarre, but I guess that goes for most foreign cultures whe analyzed from our own paradigms.

Rek's got it, except it's not exactly as extreme as he says... but it's more than most people would probably think, which is why he gave the most extreme examples.

The reason given by books and which I don't believe too much is that in Nara period(710-793) it became usual for woman to "paint" her teeth black. This was called ohaguro(お歯黒-”black teeth”). This was a sign for showing that a girl had became a woman. But in Edo period it became a sign of marriage. Most of the married woman of Japan painted their teeth black during more than 200 years. Being something forced by society, girls didn't feel very comfortable with it and they covered her mouth when smiling, unconscious. Then, covering the face with hands became as usual as rising and moving your hand when saying hi, because everybody did it. Wikipedia: Ohaguro
