I was always wondering, why do girls attending events like MSL/OSL/Proleague matches always hide away their faces, behind those posters of favorite progamers, or just in between their palms when the camera gets near? Is it just shyness?
I don't think so, because almost every (if not every) girl does this. I was thinking it could be some Korean-culture related thing, perhaps something similar to how Arab women always wear those robes that cover their heads in public; or perhaps it's just Korean modesty, I mean look at their mentality, I find it quite awesome - but then again, men never seem show this kind of behavior.
I can't understand the point of manually making a poster with Kang Min's face on it (and some gibberish written all around it too ), coming to the event with religiously punctuality (SC fans in Korea are not that MANY, but are LOYAL as hell, at least that's my impression), and shouting KANG MIN FIGHTING, but when the camera approaches (for a couple of seconds or whatever), you hide your face.
Maybe it's not that big of a deal, but I was always wondering.
|
As far as I know its just like koreans don't like to be on TV or Screens - because they are shy.. or its not like they would like to be there. Thats why they hide !
|
Ya they should wear veils from now on
|
Why would it be "like they don't want to be there"? They don't want to be seen there? Because obviously they enjoy coming, would attending e-sports games be regarded weird/childish/nerdy by friends/schoolmates/workmates in Korea? I had the opposite impression, I thought Koreans are open-minded enough to have a casual, or normal view towards StarCraft leagues.
|
Maybe embarassed to be on TV, for everyone to see them?

because they're super shy.

obviously because they don't want mom to find out where they go after school every day

Because they know 5,000 nerds in America will be checking them out if they don't.

lol The fact is, most of them seem past the age where "mom" has a influence anymore.... But perhaps they're more respectful towards parents than Europeans are. Oh where is Rekrul, he could lighten me up, I suppose.

I hate the creating posts with huge spaces to hide the ending fad that seems to be sweeping teamliquid. An elipse will do fine.

cause they dont want ppl to see they're strats isn't it.

I thought there was some kind of cultural superstition involving cameras, souls, and bad things happening?

I think they are just shy. I see them cover their mouths or turn away sometimes while laughing in my uni also.

its just natural for korean girls to never want a picture of themselves released unless its at perfect angle with lots of makeup and lots of photoshop
that and its just part of the culture, everyone does it, they probably see people doing it as babies and mimic

Ja I guess they dont want their parents to find out they're ditching school/extracirrucular activities to go to leagues

I answered it right the first time, and I will say it again.
Stop asking this question USE THE SEARCH BAR
Korean girls and guys hide their faces because they're supposed to be studying hard getting into a good school not at a live game match. This accounts for much more than shyness/culture/etc..

They're afriad of you touching yourself looking at them.

Because 99% of them are suppose to be in school cramming for college. The last thing you want is your mom turn on the TV to see you skipped cram school and went to watch starcraft.

he's right man hot girls are way less likely to cover their faces (some still do)
on cyworld which is a popular korean homepage like myspace except better, almost all hot girls make their pictures available to the public... but all the girls who only make their pictures available to friends are almost always busted

can we get a native korean's response on this?
|
1) All students are expected to study from 6AM ~ 2AM since # of Korean Students >>> # of colleges. So they should be studying and not be cheering for their favorite player and will get in trouble if caught. 2) They are ugly as fuck. 3) Asians are usually shy in their genes 4) What Rekrul said.

korea is a very superficial place, being ugly here absolutely blows, especially if you're a girl
it is utterly sickening as to how well hot girls get treated and how ugly girls get treated
i mean its like that anywhere, but this place is EXTREME
you will rarely see a hot girl/guy happily greeting an ugly guy/girl happy and normally in korea. thats not true so much in the usa. (of course there are exceptions in korea for like schools and people who must work together...but random get togethers, if a korean finds a new acquaintance of the opposite sex unnattractive conversation just aint gunna happen)
nor will you ever see a hot korean girl with a fat friend or an ugly friend. you see this all the time in the states. theres a big black fine line in korean culture between the ugly and the beautiful.
koreans dont spam world events and crimes on the news non stop like in usa too...its mostly whos hot and whos not, no one gives a fuck about north koreas nukes, they just wonder what 600k car Han Chae Young's new rich old husband bought her as a marriage present.

That's why plastic surgeons are the shit in korea now ^^.

the main reason is bc they dont want their parents finding out.

I sense a lot of bitterness... but if you what you say is true, I honestly did not realize that any country could be more shallow and superficial than the US is right now.
|
Korea (South)17174 Posts
its not bitterness, i've actually grown to enjoy the korean superficialness, its just the way they are.
i stated facts. of course there are plenty of nice people but in comparison to other countries, as a resident here for 3 years, i can definitely say its astoundingly different than the states.
koreans also care way more about money than other cultures. (this is because they are now just developing and succeeding as a nation when not so many years ago their country was in poverty). they used to NEED IT BADLY....but now that the poverty level is decreased drastically as the country is on the come up it doesn't mean that need and desire for it is no longer in their blood.
the poverty shit is also why koreans always talk about what food they ate as casual conversation EVERY TIME, also why korean mothers force their kids to eat shitloads, and also why girls love seeing a man stuff his mouth with meat, or even like feeding it straight to their mouth.
edit: superficial and shallow are completely different things. i know korean people who are superficial as hell but at the same time completely genuine nice people. weird.
|
Uh its quite customary to talk about food they ate. Back in the day when food was scarce it was a rather good manner to ask these things around, and it just circulated for that reason.
Superficiality doesn't surprise me. As one of the most academic countries in the world, they push you to strive for obstacles brought on by competition within such a small country, and culturally, it just developed as a sense of respect to your elders' wishes to do so. But this hybrid of western/eastern culture has brought forth mutations. Materialism, idol worship, and B sitcoms/dramas all developed from biased bullshit, I mean after all, unlike USA, this is a relatively homogeneous country. You are not taught the virtues of Western idealism, you are taught to be enforced upon. You are taught where instead education defines life, and not the experiences that follow it. School, work, and discipline. Nothing else matters. I mean hell, whole fucking relationships are developed on class status. Rich people will get whatever girl they want, money > personality + virtue when it comes down to it. Money is created by a foundation a person has put on himself, either inheritance or education.
fuck, it just makes me mad, when I hear stories where a kid gets beat up by his mother just because he didn't study hard enough. These kids grow up soul-less, and sometimes go on to being extremely superficial, by the way they've developed.
|
|
I find it wierd too but i think it's because if some girl does not hide her face then the other day everyone is gonna be like "what a wierdo! you looked into the camera! xD" lol. Maybe they don't think about it and just act. And rekrul i agree with you .

Nope, some of them don't and most of them that don't are easy on the eye... have you ever watch a game?
Edit: Rekrul, I just read your posts. Thanks for your input. Somehow that's the message I was aiming at when I wrote what I wrote... but it was just a hunch, as I've never been in Korea. Most of those girls that cover their faces seem to be ashamed (more than shy) of showing their faces to the camera. Pity. On the other hand the few ones that show themselves display a defiant attitude to the camera... coz they usually are pretty. It's kinda bizarre, but I guess that goes for most foreign cultures whe analyzed from our own paradigms.

Different countries have different TV cultures. For instance, on "America's Worst Animal Videos" or something, you see a bunch of Americans cuaght on camera screaming "OH MY GOD THERE'S A MONKEY ON THAT LAMP POST DOING NOTHING! AAAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!". The British are more reserved and the Koreans cover their faces. That's why only some countries can make good reality shows. Not everyone reacts to the camera in a TV friendly way.

And yeah, Koreans are superficial as hell. It's just the way we are. You should hear my mom talk about some people -- I love her and she's a really sweet and nice lady who can be real and awesome, but it's just built into her.
Rek's got it, except it's not exactly as extreme as he says... but it's more than most people would probably think, which is why he gave the most extreme examples.

Well I know why Japanesse do.
The reason given by books and which I don't believe too much is that in Nara period(710-793) it became usual for woman to "paint" her teeth black. This was called ohaguro(お歯黒-”black teeth”). This was a sign for showing that a girl had became a woman. But in Edo period it became a sign of marriage. Most of the married woman of Japan painted their teeth black during more than 200 years.
Being something forced by society, girls didn't feel very comfortable with it and they covered her mouth when smiling, unconscious. Then, covering the face with hands became as usual as rising and moving your hand when saying hi, because everybody did it.
