another thing to keep in mind is that shiv works with displacement abilities like vayne tumble.

Solely compared to phantom dancer's stats, it sacrifices 10% as and 10% crit chance for 1% movement + its passive. Can someone do the math and give me a rough overview of which is better in what situations? Strictly from a stats perspective, PD is probably better. The passive on Shiv is nice, but not amazing. However, something to think about is not the total cost of the two items, but rather what you get from upgrading the Zeal which you need for both items. I'm of the opinion that the stats you get from upgrading to PD from Zeal isn't really worth the cost when compared to Shiv. There is also the fact that BT is a much stronger alternative to IE now, combined with the way penetration works, that BT + LW seems to be the new core, over IE + PD for a lot of the popular carries right now. No longer is the holy trinity of AD/Crit/AS completely dominant, and fitting in an IE is much more awkward now. Without the early IE, I'm hesitant to value the crit and as from the PD as favorably when compared to the Shiv passive. Also, 1% more MS. MS op!

This is Kayle's DPS with BT PD 361 http://leaguecraft.com/builder/kayle/?items=73,89&level=18&fspells=true This is Kayle's DPS with BT Shiv 315 http://leaguecraft.com/builder/kayle/?items=73,261&level=18&fspells=true After two seconds of autoattacking PD will start doing more dps to the primary target. At which point shiv's proc becomes trivial. Here's Kayle with IE PD BT http://leaguecraft.com/builder/kayle/?items=73,89,60&level=18&fspells=true Here it is with IE BT Shiv http://leaguecraft.com/builder/kayle/?items=73,261,60&level=18&fspells=true You now make the proc damage back in a bit over 1 second with PD. Leaguecraft assumes BT is fully stacked It also has the wrong base stats for Kayle No masteries or runes were added Kayle is level 18 Often times leaguecraft has a buggy calculator. I prefer to do mine by hand but w/e.

Also constant AA is not always practical, as is pointed out time and time again. Also pushing power on ADs without easily accesible waveclear isn't factored into the calculation of pure DPS.

Those crit chain lightning pokes are pretty great if you have a champ that can abuse the range like Caitlyn or Ezreal or Ashe.

Ashe's passive means it's a guaranteed crit though. Something's gotta work with Ashe's passive. It cries at night because nobody loves it.

Similarly, I dont think it would be that bad an option for Trist. Possibly Kog if I knew I needed a lot of wave clear, but even then I would lean towards PD. Both have long enough range to make the poke really come out to play. Edit: whoa damn, when did I hit 7k posts?

Its perfect for Ez because of his ability to bounce around like a pinball, and his ability to have long range poke. Similarly, I dont think it would be that bad an option for Trist. Right, the actual AoE of Lay Waste is larger than the "skittle", so if you cast it in a bush that an enemy has vision of they'll see it. However if you just fire them in the depths of the Fog of War they can't be seen.
