Is the game too volatile, or is the skill gap at the top level just too close unlike last year? I wonder.
I think the skill gap is a bit closer. But is it that much more volatile at the top? Remember, GSLs are more spread out this year so there is more time for player skill to change between GSLs. If we only look at the 2011 GSLs that would have happened during the 2012 schedule
Season 1 - Jan 2011 - Mvp MKP
Season 2 - Mar 2011 - MC July
Season 3 - Jul 2011 - Nestea Losira
Season 4 - Oct 2011 - Mvp MMA
Season 5 - Nov 2011 - Jjajki Leenock
I think people has just forgotten how hard it is to make Ro8 in GSL. You would be surprise if you look at the 2011 Ro8, there aren't that many players that have made 3 Ro8s.

But..But... Life 4-3ed Leenock at MLG ?! What in the world is happening ?!
I guess "If A>B and B>C, then A>C" doesn't apply in SC2 :D
Life is superman. He can defeat anyone except... those with kryptonite! But yeah, different players have different play styles. Some people are better against other players than others.
Edit - On a more serious note, this is a common occurrence and doesn't speak volatility of anything.
See Nestea vs Losira GSL July finals (Nestea never lost a single game in GSL July).
Lets take Dota for example (since it's popular here on TL) - There are carries that can take out nearly every other hero once they're fully farmed and there are anti carries that specialize in taking out specifically carries (but maybe being useless in other areas).
Lets take someone like Outworld Destroyer for example. He went mid is the carry + farmed hero of the team, he's wrecking the enemy team.... EXCEPT they have have Pugna! Sneak in a Nether Ward, and Outworld Destroyer becomes basically useless unless he's stacked with high life items (his orb ability costs 100 mana to cost, which means Pugna's Netherward at level 4 deals 175 damage to him, everytime he uses it).
(Of course inb4 who uses OD as their carry considering BKB, silence, etc.)
Anyway that's a quick example but the point is, in any game or competition, just because someone defeats 90% of other players doesn't mean they can't be defeated by a "lower level" player (especially if the supposed lower level player specializes against that 90% win rate guy).

it is realistic to call leenock the biggest favorite to win the season now?

Probably. Creator and MKP aren't far behind. Haven't seen enough from Bogus/Soulkey to make a judgement. HyuN, Sniper and Ryung are the underdogs but who knows. Seed was the least favored to win (1% on polls) when he made Ro8.

There is too much randomness in this game and much less micro than in BW. When maps were smaller MC, MVP, Nestea could micro units more and therefore skill in micro really mattered. Now on big maps games often last more than 20 minutes and in late game success depends on how well players have casted vortex, fungal in final battle.

Why than in you opinion MC, Nestea, MVP managed to win GSL several times? And why for a year and a half there is always new champion in GSL?
And by the way micro doesn’t consist only in splitting marines.

So the answer to your question is that MKP was worse than those 3 and couldn't adapt to sc2.

Nope, smaller maps and ability to micro allowed to MC, Nestea, MVP to show that they are better than the others.

Not so hard, best 8 players of previous GSL just need to win 4 best of 3 in a row or win 4 best of 3 out of 6.
