Hello guys.
It may be quite selfish to exploit the huge knowledgebase that is held by proud teamliquidians, but I must humbly inquire for your wise advice.
My girlfriend is currently traveling in the US and is going to spend the week from september 2 to 7 in New York. She worked hard two months in a youth camp in the kitchen and now she spends all her money visiting places. Currently she is in Miami (where someone stole her phone and camera ) and leaves for NY soon.
Can you guys suggest any cheap place to crash for a week? Maybe someone can host her and her (gay) friend? I searched for some hostels but they start at ~30 USD / night / person which I find a bit expensive. Maybe I'm just a cheap fuck.
P.S.: On a side note, she earned like 1400 USD in 2 months. (edit: it was 1200 USD, I just asked her) I find that amount kind of low, what do you think? She worked 5 days a week, 10-11 hours a day as kitchen staff. She received accomodation and food though.

Try couchsurfing.org.
EDIT: $30 a night is as cheap as you're going to find. Also room/board + $700 a month is very nice, I'd say.

Yea, couchsurfing seems nice, I already started looking at it before writing this post. I'm just a little scared for her. I shouldn't have let her go alone. :\

My GF was in NY this spring, I'm gonna ask her tomorrow where she stayed, I can't remember the name of the place. It was very cheap, but also not really top notch quality (hence the low price, I guess).

Thanks Naib, that would help.
Edit: About couchsurfing: she wrote to a bunch of hosts, but they don't seem to reply. :\
Edit2: If an admin comes around, please double the 'm' in the title...

Maybe the problem is that she is not going alone, but with another guy.

Having been in NYC in a hostel (2 actually) 30$ is the price you pay (if my memory serves me right). It was even more expensive elsewhere.

She said it was "Twelve Towns YMCA", for 55 bucks a night (which seems to be more expensive than what you wrote, I remembered differently).
Her advice was that she should take a bus to Chinatown, and look around - there's bound to be very cheap hostels there (which can't be found on the internet).

Thanks a lot Naib!
