So, I've been trying to play some BW lately when I have some free time and don't want to play SC2 for wahtever reason, and it's pretty frustrating so far.
I've only gotten to play a few times thus far because it's been so damn hard to find a game. I downloaded Iccup and got on and 3/4 of the people in the D ladder channel don't speak english. I've asked for 1v1's in the D ladder channel, OP Teamliquid, and another channel that had quite a few people in it and noones ever responded. I try to join open games, but most people are either high d/low c and don't want to play people much worse than them, and half the time I get banned/booted as soon as I join a game (what few there are). I realize I'm going to get completely raped when I play, but I can't even play. I know a lot of people still play BW, where are they all, and why can't I find a game!?
I've won 2 games, and lost a few so far. My First win was a PvT. I got 3 bases up and the terran did a failed push (neither of us was macroing too well) and my macro was really screwed up at this point, so I just kept rallying my gates rather than try to get arbiters or do anything fancy. I eventually won, and it felt pretty good.
My second win was from a zerg game. I 3 hatched, and made way too many lings because I don't really know waht I'm doing. In VODs I see zergs have relitively few drones compared to what I'm used to in SC2, so I got waht looked like good saturation on 2 base, then made some mutalisks with my gas, Took a third, and spammed lings. He pushed me with a handful of marines, 2 firebats and a medic. I overmade lings, so with a sunk I defended, but I didn't feel confident, because my followup wasn't great. As the mutas popped out, I dropped a hydra den and an evo because I see people do that, and sent my mutas in (I can't micro them, and I'm not even going to try until I have a basic understanding of what to do. When I flew in, however, he had like 3 marines, a firebat, 2 medics and a tank. So I just attacked and won.
Here are my thoughts so far on each race Protoss I think I'm best at protoss, because I find it a lot easier to macro with protoss, but I don't particularly enjoy playing protoss. It's very fun, don't get me wrong, but I just prefer playing terran or zerg. I think I have a good hold on PvT, PvP I just make pure dragoons because I don't know waht's going on there, and I hate playing versus zerg. I don't know how to FFE safely (I misplace something and block a nexus, or lings run right by, etc) and that's really the only thing that you see protoss in VODs do.
Terran
TvZ is so fun. I get how it works and I feel like I can actually give people a good game (I'll probably lose, but it's not a complete 1 sided rape). I do have some problems timing out turrets, and I've gotten busted 1 or 2 times by lurker openings, but other than that, it's going well. I'm really bad with mech, so TvT and especially TvP is a debocle. I'm just making a lot of tanks and then amoving at some point, and I've gotten destroyed every time
Zerg My favorite race I think. It's my race in Star2, and it's so fun. I don't have a super good idea of what to do, so it's a bit frustrating, but I have some broad strokes in my mind. In ZvT I can 3 hatch, and get the gas timings to go for mutalisks, but I don't really know when I'm making to many or too few drones, I don't really get when to expand, and when/how to transition out of lurker/ling (I mean, I know to get defilers, then ultras, but that's all I know). In ZvP, I'm a bit lost. I know you're supposed to get a super fast third and then power drones and get a quick spire for scourge, but sometimes protoss doesn't go for corsairs and even when they do, I feel like I don't know what to do next (I make hydras, but then I just get stormed or killed by reavers). In ZvZ I just immediately die all the time, but I know it's a really unforgiving matchup, so I'm not expecting much here
Frustrations
-I can't find a game for shit
-When I'm playing zerg I get drones going to weird places because of the rally system. I rally to the front after the very early game, and I have a hard time keeping track of my rallies later and I'll make some drones and they'll end up in the middle of a bunch of lurkers and lings.
-People flame you for being new or being a noob a lot
-I want to play zerg exclusively, but it's a little frustrating only being able to play versus terran, really. The same kind of applies to Terran. I can play TvZ, but not either of the other mu
-Edit* I have a hard time scouting unless the mains are laid out in a really easy spot (like on FS), I just end up having my drone go somewhere weird :/
Just a random collection of thoughts. I hope some people could give me advice on some of the stuff I wrote about, if not, that's cool too. I just like writing stuff down.
The best way to find a game is in an active channel like sGs, and add people to your friend list after you play them (if you actually want to add them, of course)
Basically, connect with the few remaining BW players, it tends to be a bit more gratifying than playing on ladder against random people, depending on what kind of experience you're looking for, of course.

I was a low C on iccup when I played BW and playing complete or semi noobs is just a waste of time for both parties, I just host my own games wuahaha so i can cherry pick who i play against
Can you host? Look into it and host a game like "1v1 Python d-" and tell me that you can't find opponents.
Also regarding your dilemma about choosing race, just race pick like many others do on iccup. For example, if opponent selects terran, go zerg. If he's zerg, go terran. If he's toss, I guess you should go toss.

I have and can't. Sure, I've gotten 1 here and there (I'm talking like 1 per hour if that), but not enough to really practice. Most of the time I'll sit there for 10 mins, noone will join and I'll tab out to the internet and someone joins, says gogo, then leaves before I tab back a minute or two later. That or they join and immediately drop (yes, I'm running Antihack)
Oooooh, and another thing that's frustrating me. I can't scout for shit unless the starting locations are really really easy to find (ie, FS, because you just click in the corners)

That's strange; your portforwarding settings might not be right. You can at least try close/opening slots to refresh it. Usually when I host, I get players almost instantaneously. Are you using a mac by any chance?
Regarding scouting, I mean I'd just stick with 1-2 maps especially when you are just starting -- it's hard enough learning the game as it is.

-Understand port forward, and you shall find games easily -Try asking for help in op teamliquid, or in simple question simple answer bw version. Or pm me maybe, I shall play you for a few games. -You have to learn map, play one or two game in single player. You'd need to learn walls as protoss if you want to play PvZ, or try one base play. -P is usually considered the easiest race at low level, so everything's normal. -I guess TvZ makes the most sense for someone with a sc2 background, as long as you make medics^^ Lots of possible gameplans too -You can't invent TvP like that I think, it's too hard. You need vultures and mines with your tanks, and you need a sense of timing :/ -ZvT has a very precise gameplan that you seem to be getting the hang of. Try to get a more precise build order though, it will help a lot. Lurkers are good, and defilers are very good. -ZvP : no decent guide to modern ZvP on tl. I'd advice to overpool, 11 hatch, 14 gas, 13 hatch, but you have to adapt to what you see and scout for cannon rush and so on. The idea after is to scout the protoss build and to make more or less drones and defenses depending on what you see. I really don't understand it very well though. Harem advised this build in another thread :
I don't understand the whole portforward thing and how to know if lyou have a problem. Most of the language used in those threads doesn't make any sense to me (i'm not particularly computer literate). Most people who ask about portforwarding seem to not be able to create games or join games. I've done both, so I don't know if that's the proboem. I've gone to portforwarding.com (most of the threads say that) and tried following their guide for my model, and can't figure outthe password. THe provided one doesn't work, none of the default ones for cisco work, and I don't have any paperwork on my router that has this info :/
Should be this clan if I remember correctly. If you join a clan on iccup, you can easily see who's online with the /c online command. Sorry, I guess they hang out in OP teamliquid.
But yeah, judging from the iCCup team page, there are still a fair amount of active players.
Yeah its becoming harder and harder to get a game nowadays, all thanks to SC2 and the coming end of the BW pro-scene. Fucking bullshit isn't it?
Anyway, I can host and whenever you find me on op teamliquid just message me and I will play you. If I'm not responding I'm probably trying to figure out how to fix FMLE+Camtasia for streaming
finding a decent game is to hard for me to play BW these days. It takes so long to get one, and yes lot's of flamers, so it's pretty much dead for me . For me at least, not speaking for everyone, RIP one of the best games made.
Well, I hear Koreans still primarily play BW atm, do they not play on Iccup or something? Do they have a service like that over there? Can you play on that?

Koreans mainly play on Fish server i think.
You're goign to have to forgive me, I don't know what this means :/ Is Fish a service like iccup? Can foreigners play on it, or is everyone like super gosu there aren't any newer/weaker players to play agaisnt

It's another server like iCCup. Out of the two Korean servers (Brain and Fish), it's supposed to be the "easier" one, though of course that's a relative term. I'd say it would be best to wait until you can hit at least D+/C- consistently on iCCup before you go on Fish to make it worthwhile.
