After following Starcraft for 2 years I can safely say this game is bad. Well bad to play at any rate. I don't like it anymore and I know a few people that have been feeling like this for a while too. So why am I still here? Well, I can still watch it and gain some sort of entertainment so it's not completely gone from my life like some games have.
With the disappearance of Starcraft 2 from my schedule, it marks the end of something I've been for as long as I can remember. I've played games since I was 4 years old and I'm going on 19 in a few months. Suddenly I'm not a gamer anymore. No modern games are any good to me. Starcraft was the last game I played and probably is going to be the second last game I'll ever play. As I'm getting Diablo 3 for free I might as well play a character to the end of the game. Likely a Barbarian character because it's simple brute force which is all I can spare effort for anymore.
It's kind of a liberating thought to be honest. I have all this free time which, arguably, was already there to begin with and yet all I did when I was younger was play games. It literally was my existence. Get up, go to school, come home and play video games all night. I don't want to blame games for my errors in education. I fucked up. I have to leave university now but I actually think that's a good idea. I think if I wasn't so stuck on play games all the time I would have passed this year but I wouldn't have enjoyed the course anyway so it's a blessing in disguise I guess. I was studying game programming by the way. Soul destroying stuff and I'm so glad to be rid of it.
But now I have nothing to do. I've been sitting here at my computer every night just wondering what the fuck I'm supposed to do. I kept launching Starcraft only to close it again after a game or two. I have the WoW beta but premade character templates aren't available so I'm not playing that currently. As if WoW was a game anyway
I have a keyboard and guitar sitting there unused so I think I'll turn to music for my spare time. I have 4 months of holiday and I'll be damned if I sit here for all 4 months doing nothing. I always wanted to learn instruments so I guess I'll be doing that soon. I believe music is key to being happy in life but have never had the time due to, you guessed it, games being in the way.
Maybe it wasn't the games but the personality. I'm hesitant to blame either games or myself so I'll just leave it alone. It was probably both. Games are such an excellent procrastination medium after all.
At least with all this talk of Brood War players playing SC2 I might get to see a game that I can't call out what's going to happen after the players place their first couple of buildings. I doubt it though SC2 just seems designed for stale repetitive builds being played against each other again and again. It's all very monotonous.
I think all my new found spare time will be put towards learning Korean and learning how to play guitar and piano. I'm actually pretty happy about that. I also recently bought Chessmaster 9000 from gog.com which I don't count as a computer game as such. I love chess so maybe I'll get half decent at that.
Well see you all around.
Actually now that I think about I'll likely buy HotS and Legacy so I can finish the story. I hate leaving things unfinished like that.

^^ Do you really carea bout the story at this point? This was the game that killed the starcraft storyline for me

whatever floats your boat man. if its not making you happy or entertaining you like it was, drop it. whatever you want, keep yourself happy ^^

I never played BW campaign so yes I still do.

Yeah exactly ^^
I can't wait until college starts again. I'm itching for things to do and for the first time in my life I want to be studious.

TURN THAT FROWN UPSIDE DOWN.

Damn, I really loved reading this blog.
The way you put words together... and the content.

If you want to do something useful get a job. Don't spend the next 4 months doing nothing.

SC2 is pretty bad... story line is beyond crap.
I still can't get over why they had to get rid of dragoon and replace it with stalker which is 100% uglier.

I still can't get over why they had to get rid of dragoon and replace it with stalker which is 100% uglier. Out of all the units they removed in sc2, you mention the stalker? lol what about reavers, or lurkers, or even scourge.
|
Reaver was replaced with collosi which is a better unit :D so i didn't mind really.
Lurkers and scourge don't care, glad they are gone, make pvz easier. I only play protoss. I understood the reasoning behind them at least, with new mechanics, lurkers and scourge are obsolete, lurker will be useless because protoss have a reasonable seige unit in collosi and storm can really rofl over it now.
I was mad with stalker as there is absolutely no point in replacing it. Dragoon did exactly the same role as stalker... what was the point?
|
^^ They were meant to be upgraded dragoons, dragoon shells with dark templar tech, hence the silvery color as opposed to the golden tinge that dragoons had.
My biggest problems with stalkers is that they shoot like wimps, compare that to the dragoon animation, the goon feels so powerful and nice when the plasma ball strikes.
|
yeah true. very unsatisfying microing stalker compare to dragoon.
|
But why ? If you don't support sc2 is e-sport is doom.
|
How about Broodwar? Surely, one cannot become tired of playing it.

You notice this being a starcraft forum when an OP talking about leaving games in generel becomes a talk about sc vs sc2 =)
What you are experiencing are "getting older" Might sound silly but its the truth. You need something deeper then what games can provide and thus games don't have you're attention anymore. I've experienced this myself in the past. But don't give up on games, just enjoy them differently.
When I was younger I played games basicly because that was what I did. Most of the time it wasn't even that fun, I just did it. But for the last couple of years I only play when I enjoy it and when I actually want to play. Its rare that I play any game. SC2 isn't even installed. So play when you want to play and not because you feel like you have to. =) And do something else stupid with your time... Learn juggling (i did) or do the music =)

Starcraft has no RPG element too it. One has to create their own motivation.
There is no leveling up, no acquiring armor, no statistical advantage over your opponent other than skill. As you improve, the matches get harder and more frustrating. No wonder LoL is more popular than SC2.
I won't get into whether or not SC is a balanced or exciting game. But, for a competitive RTS that's played 1v1, its pretty good.
Good luck on your studies.

This is the exact reason why I play this game.

I once also tought that i was getting older.
Sad fact is, no.. Thats only half the story.. It's just that SC2 is boring and bland. I can waste tons of time on Dota 2 and various other games. I bite my ass of to get thru Trials Evolution, i "learned" EU Imperialis.... ... Your not getting older, SC2 is just underwhelming to say the least...
Sure i got some other top priorities now (i'm 28)... But i can still dig into a game as deep as i want, if it's worth it.
SC2 just isn't.

it's pretty cool to make blogs about quitting starcraft
instead of just doing it and not giving a fuck
