On April 22 2012 03:16 hacklebeast wrote: + Show Spoiler + Guess I'll be the party pooper for this. It just wasn't very good. Random brother we've never heard of marrying random alicorn princess we've never heard of and twilight needs to break out of secret underground ancient prison and get the elements of harmony to fight off a hoard of shape shifting zombie ponies? Really? MLP hasn't revolved around spectacles or fight scenes, but I feel that's all this episode really had to offer. If i wanted to watch action cartoon I'd watch GI Joe or Bleach. That's not the think that MLP does well. Acknowledgement that luna and dj aren't dead is nice, and the duet between the Candices was pretty cool, but that's not enough to float an episode on, and certainly not a two parter. There were minimal funny parts (and the few that happened were all sight gags) and the characters were as shallow and uninteresting as they have ever been. Isn't this what G1 was? Ponies fighting monsters coupled with horrible cheesy emotions? + Show Spoiler + A fair assessment, and I agree that the show's strengths shine in slice-of-life, but let's consider the Hasbro mandate for a moment. The characters and the 2011 royal wedding theme were pre-dictated by merchandising. That much we know for a fact, and given it, the epic angle sounds like the most bearable course of action for handling it. The last thing we want is forty-five minutes of forced chick-flick comedy/drama. The advertising was quite enough. As for G1… G1 was lame because the designated protagonists never actually did anything beyond running away and whimpering like little girls until the plot forces dealt with the monsters. It gets way too much credit for "darkness" and "danger" and shit.

Clearly 10/10, awesome episode, easily on one level with the best of the best, a more than worthy season finale - a couple of good jokes and well drawn like always - the song ROCKED - everypony acts 100% in character - the two new characters are awesome, interesting and have depths. Twilights brother is cool and powerful. I could immediately accept him as a part of the series and wouldn't mind seeing him more. He just fits. Princess Kerrigan is interesting, too. A powerful magic user who was good once but turned evil. But maybe she is under the influence of somepony else? So curious for part 2!!! - the story is awesome and makes 100% sense. There was this point when I thought "oh and now Twilight isn't going to do the obvious thing and just tell Princess Celestia what she saw because it wouldn't fit the story". But then she went and told and instead of ending it, it only fueled the story because the evil Princess has accounted for that. EDIT: ARG PART 2 IS ALREADY OUT OH MY GOSH!!!! HOW LUCKY THAT I DIDNT SPOILER MYSELF YIYIYIYIY Edit 2: watched part 2 now: 10/10 too - the story was only 8/10 because a) it was a bit odd that suddenly a thousand Changeling Ponies appeared out of nowwhere and b) the ending was a bit a sudden, but it was still GOOD. - the song, oh my good the song! so insanely good. "I could care less about the dress/ I won't partake in any cake/ vows will I be lying when I say / that through any kind of weather I want us to be together/ the truth is I don't care for him of aaaaall" 10/10 with 5 extra stars! so good, so good, so good, so good!!! I will listen to it so many times. - the ending was perfect, the Sonic Rainboom "best wedding ever", Rarity's catch, Pinkie Party, the wedding marsh sung by cute Flutterbirds

+ Show Spoiler + not too bad not too great ether probably a strong 7/10 or a weak 8/10. the introduction was a little awkward with twis brother, he felt pretty flat and just was used as a plot devise. they managed to give him some feeling at the very end but overall he was still pretty meh. other then that the episode was pretty cool, a few minor pacing issues and redundancies but the songs were pretty fun. overall it felt like a disney movie (not that that is a bad thing) also + Show Spoiler + FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

My only criticism is the songs should have been longer. Perhaps the dialogue and the introduction part of part 1 was a bit lacklustre in comparison. I really find it hard to fault. It exceeded expectations in that I suspected a boring Wedding Episode with a bit of Twilight anxiety that was aimed at selling pink princess pony merchandise. It turned out to be much, much better than that though.

It wasn't the most original or quality story ever told, but it still worked fantastic by throwing these great characters into that sort of situation. Had me entertained to the end. Changeling really does look like a zerg unit.

On April 22 2012 09:15 1337n00b wrote:+ Show Spoiler + Since we are officially entering the great pony drought, I thought that I'd share some fics that I really enjoyed. Please don't expect things to be at Cam or Bio's level of analysis. I'll be paraphrasing some of the descriptions, as well as highlighting grimdark, incomplete, shipping, comedy, and human fics since some of those may be unappealing. + Show Spoiler [Putting on the rose-tinted glasses!] + Fallout Equestria -- Kkat [Grimdark] First off, I'd like to say that I am in no way biased towards FoE (you know, the same way as how none you cried while reading Circle of Friends). Anyways, this fic, is definitely one of the best of the fandom. You don't need to have played or even touched Fallout to understand it; my experience with Fallout is seeing my friend play 5 minutes of it and knowing a weapon called the Board of Education or something. It's action-packed from beginning to end, but still maintains an extremely engaging plot line. While this fic is listed as grimdark, there's actually very little gore that I can think of. If you need more encouragement, check out Midnight Shadow's description of FoE. Word count: This fic is over 600K words, making it longer (and just as epic) as the LotR trilogy, so expect to be reading for a while if you start. Description: + Show Spoiler + Fallout. With ponies! Set in an alternate future, one pony must learn to survive in a blasted, poisoned land... and possibly, with the aid of friends made along the way, bring new light into the darkness of post-apocalyptic Equestria. Fallout Equestria: Heroes -- No One [Grimdark], [Incomplete] You can tell a FoE fic will be good when it gets its own post in EqD. In fact, those are the only ones that I look at. From what I know of Fallout, this one follows the New Vegas plotline. Of course, I don't know anything about Fallout, so feel free to enlighten me if I'm being stupid again. Word count: Currently 218,356 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Inspired by the heroics of the mysterious mare known as the Stable Dweller, Silver Storm, a guard of the town of Marefort, decides to go on a daring mission to rescue her captured brother. Of course things rarely go as planned and her attempts at heroism drags her into a tangled web of plots and conspiracies as warring factions vie for control over the last great city: Dise. Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons -- Somber [Grimdark], [Incomplete] Possibly my favorite fic. Somber has taken Kkat's legendary FoE, and added so much more to it. Everything that made the original great is right in this fic - and even more! This fic is huge! It's at least ~30K words longer than the original. Word count: >630K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Forced into the life of a security mare, Blackjack is far more interested in eking out what fun she can in the dim halls of Stable 99. All that changes as she becomes enveloped in a plot that not only endangers her stable but the remaining world as well. Fallout Equestria - Pink Eyes -- Mimezinga Po [Grimdark] I imagine that this author read FoE and thought: "What if I put in the most innocent character imaginable into post-apocalyptic Equestria and wrote a story about it?" Don't take it as seriously as other FoE fics, a lot of it is based on the perspectives of a foal. Regardless, this story was also very well done - and the ending was strong (as opposed to, unfortunately, The Games We Play). If you enjoyed Fallout Equestria, you'll probably like this one as well. Word count: 134,537 Description: + Show Spoiler + Hope is the faith of the young. Losing everything she holds dear, Puppysmiles embarks on the adventure of her life to find her mother, her hopes of meeting her again driving her through the horrors of a world not of her making. Too bad the Wasteland doesn't care about hope. It's a Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door -- Jetfire I love adventure fics. Dangerous Business is one of the best of them. Unlike FoE, it maintains a close resemblance to the show, by that I mean less gore and death. The beginning was kind of slow for me, but it's definitely worth reading. Word count: ~140K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + When an accident leaves Twilight Sparkle seriously ill, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity must undertake a perilous journey to find her a cure. What adventures await them beyond Equestria's borders? Past Sins -- Pen Stroke Past Sins was the second fic that I have ever read, so I may be hazy on the details. When you have over 2300 ratings on EqD and you still have 6 stars, you're probably doing something right. The OP compares it to Harry Potter, which I disagree with since I didn't actually like HP all that much. Anyways, it's worth a read - even Gary took the time to read it. Some people don't like Past Sins because it has a large amount of redundant prose, but it's a fic that you need to read to decide for yourself. Word count: Didn't check, but it's ~500 pages, so it's quite large. Description: + Show Spoiler + On a dark night filled with even darker magics, an insane cult attempts to give Nightmare Moon a body and life of her own, utterly separate from Princess Luna. But, when the spell is interrupted by Celestia, something unexpected is created. Now, an little black alicorn filly named Nyx finds herself living under the care of Twilight Sparkle, only to be haunted by memories and emotions from her past. Is the filly Nightmare Moon reborn or is she simply a doppelganger with a soul and mind of her own? Can Twilight Sparkle protect Nyx from those refuse to see past her dragon eyes and black coat? Or, will Nyx be forced to inherit the sins that may not even be hers and become the greatest evil Equestria has ever known? Pony Psychology -- SaddlesoapOpera [Shipping], [some Dark] While this is more of a collection of short stories, I didn't feel like writing something for each individual story. Watch as the Mane 6 fight their inner demons, and do their best to understand what it truly means to be bearers of the Elements of Harmony. After that, you can look at some more stories involving the Princesses, Derpy, and Trixie. The entire collection has a sad tag, and Derpy's part has a dark tag if you want to avoid that. Word count: The Mane 6 part has around ~25K words, when you include the 3 extra it reaches ~57K words. Each individual short story has its own description, so you may want to see it for yourself. Basically, the Mane 6 go crazy. The Games We Play -- AbsoluteAnonymous [Shipping] No other fic has kept me reading as long as this one. A story about Rainbow Dash (the best pony) and by AbsoluteAnonymous (my favorite fic author) probably helps, but it's still to date one of my favorite shipfics. Pretty much everyone is in character, the romance is solid, etc. In general, it did not disappoint. Also, once you finish reading, you can look at the Supplementary Materials, many of them are funny as hell, and others are just really well written. Don't focus too much on the mystery aspect, you won't have much difficulty guessing who Mare-Do-Well is if you do. The ending may or may not be lackluster to you though. Word count: 138,266 Description: + Show Spoiler + Man, I really like this one: There's been another sighting of the mysterious Mare Do Well...but this time, all of Rainbow Dash's friends plead ignorance, insisting that they've put aside their costumes for good. Rainbow Dash is determined to uncover the masked mare's true identity before she's humiliated yet again, but this time around, the vigilante seems especially interested in her as well. Will Rainbow Dash be able to solve the mystery before the culprit takes the hoax too far? Or is she in danger of losing not only her mind, but her heart? Off The Edge Of The Map -- Daetrin [Friendshipping] It's a good adventure story. Also, FlutterDash is cute as hell, it'd be my OTP if PinkieDash wasn't so awesome. Word count: ~34K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + When Rainbow Dash's newest trick backfires spectacularly, she and Fluttershy find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere. Together, they'll have to survive and find their way back to Equestria and Ponyville...no matter how far the journey. Apotheosis -- Daetrin [Shipping] A continuation of Off The Edge Of The Map. You should probably read that before this. This time the shipping is TwiLuna, and one of the best of its kind in my opinion (I didn't actually like Common Sky that much). If you've read Off The Edge Of The Map, this should definitely be read as well. Word count: Slightly longer than its prequel with ~42K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + When Celestia sends Twilight along with Luna on a diplomatic mission to Draconia, they soon find themselves in a place that does not appear on any map. Allegrezza -- CoffeeGrunt [Shipping], [Comedy] Most of my favorite ships are between the Mane 6, and I'm too young to drink, so Allegrezza wasn't as enjoyable for me as for, say, Raelcun. However, it was well-done and had a great finale. Word count: 47,565 Description: + Show Spoiler + Octavia is a high-class pony. Fine alcohol is her wont, and uncouthness her intense chagrin. Such is her surprise to find herself lumbered with an insufferable oaf of a DJ pony. However, sometimes these situations work themselves into a satisfactory ultimatum all the same. Tales -- George Pollock, Jr. Here's a medium-sized sadfic. Memoir-type fics are generally some of my favorites, and Tales was no exception. It's always sad to see the Mane 6 later in life, when they have grown or even departed. There are a ton of unanswered questions in this one, but that should be expected. I do have one criticism for this piece, you can probably figure it out pretty easily. Word count: ~18K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + In an alternate FiM universe, the retired royal librarian of Equestria looks back on the interesting times of her life. Yours Truly -- Thanqol [Shipping] This one is just as good (or even better) than Tales in my opinion. The character interaction is extremely well done, and despite it being shipping, they are all pretty much in character. I'd say it's mostly an Applejack x Twilight, but there's tons of other things going on involving all the Mane 6. Off the top of my head I have no problems with this fic. It's not extremely long either, so you should definitely read it! Word count: ~18K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Distance can drive us apart. It can also bring us closer together. After all is said and done, and the ponies have gone their separate ways, the only way they have to keep in touch is through letters. Not Unless You Mean It -- Donny's Boy [Shipping] When I look for shipping stories, I generally look at Donny's Boy and AbsoluteAnonymous' stories first, because they're usually really well written. This one wrapped up in an interesting way, be sure to check it out. Word count: 21,035 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Pinkie Pie's crush on Rainbow Dash is possibly the worst-kept secret in all Equestria. Rainbow doesn't really pay it much attention, though, until Fluttershy asks her to make an important promise. It sounds easy enough to keep ... but a promise, like love, is often harder and more complicated than it first appears. Building Bridges -- Cloudy Skies [Shipping] I'll admit that during my first read, I didn't like this fic. It was only after reading this the second time to determine whether I should include it or not did I realize that I liked it. Anyways, it's a TwiDash fic, and I wanted to include at least one. This one does it the best without being excessively long (if you want one that's pretty long, try Flying High, Falling Hard and tell me how it is, I haven't read it). Word count: ~16K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Rainbow Dash is torn between fulfilling her dreams and acting on her feelings for Twilight Sparkle. Does Twilight not feel the same way, or is she simply oblivious to Rainbow's intentions? The Fires of Friendship -- Ponydora Prancypants [Friendshipping] This story was written as a birthday present to WhiteDiamonds. It's cover art is pretty amazing, and the story itself is great. Features Rarity, Applejack, and the CMC. The history between Rarity and Applejack was even believable. Word count: 9,908 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Rarity and Applejack share a secret history: as fillies, they were the best of friends, until one terrible day soured their relationship for years to come. Forced back together by recent events and mutual friendships, they nevertheless cannot ignore the painful memories of all that went wrong. The past cannot be changed, but when Rarity and Applejack must work together to save their sisters from terrible danger, it just may be the case that a friendship once broken can be reforged in fire, and emerge from the flames stronger than ever before. This story is a birthday gift from me and the illustrator, Harwick, to a very dear friend with a singular affection for Rarity and Applejack. Home Grown -- AbsoluteAnonymous [Shipping] Yup, another AbsoluteAnonymous fic, expect to see a lot of these. This time it's a RariJack, which also delves into what ponies believe about homosexuality. Or something. Just read it! Word count: 8,512 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Some secrets need to be kept, and others need to be set free; but sometimes, not even the Element of Honesty can tell the difference. How do you tell your family the truth about something that you can't even admit to yourself? When Applejack begins to realize that she may have feelings for a friend, she needs to find the courage to accept who she really is before she can truly be happy. Black and White -- Melionos [Shipping] I don't understand why this gets a shipping tag, but no sad tag. Regardless, it involves Lyra and Octavia and love triangles or something. Definitely worth reading. Word count: ~8K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Shortly after her lyre is desecrated by magically altered parasprites, an irritated Lyra receives a package from a pony she hasn't heard from in years. And if the contents are anything to judge by, that pony misses her very much... Naked Singularity -- Cold in Gardez [Comedy] It's comedy, it's 6 star, and it's ponies. Even more, it's Twilight being adorkable. If those aren't good enough reasons to read this, then unfortunately it's your loss. Word count: 10,524 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Twilight Sparkle is a gifted student and scholar. When she attempts to harness her creative side by writing a science-themed sensual romance novel, however, things rapidly get out of hoof. Can her friends stage an intervention before she humiliates herself (and them) at a prestigious literature recital? No. No, they cannot. Shipping Goggles -- AbsoluteAnonymous [Comedy], [Shipping] The same concept as Naked Singularity, but this time with Rarity. The description for this one so very well describes 90% of shipfics - basically, Sturgeon's Law. Word count: 2,778 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Maybe that glance lasted just a little too long, or maybe a certain conversation could be interpreted as innuendo. Whatever it is, sometimes we see only what we want to see, and sometimes our fantasies get the best of us. Rarity is no exception. Moonspire Run -- TitanRising Has Rainbow Dash and Spitfire, but no shipping! Instead you get a fun adventure fic that is relatively short (relative to stuff like Dangerous Business, it's still medium length). Word count: ~14K words Description: + Show Spoiler + Rainbow Dash gets a lesson on more than just flying from her hero, Spitfire. Blue Steel Railway -- writer This one earned second place in Fimfiction's February Write-Off. It gives great characterization to Applejack, who honestly never gets enough. The 'twist', if you could call it that, was well executed. This was my favorite of the Top 3 for the Write-Off (you can find #1 Melting Away and #3 Pinkie Pie vs. in their respective links). Word count: 11,448 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Dodge Junction is a foul place, full of fouler people. At least, that's what Sheriff Bismarck wants Applejack to believe. And yet, here, among the dregs of society, Applejack finds an honest soul to help her rid her home town of a fearsome beast - a grizzled old outlaw, desperate for redemption. A Broken Bond -- Rated PonyStar Here's a CMC story for you. I don't tend to read many of these, but this one was pretty decent. Even better, Scootaloo isn't an orphan in this one! Word count: ~25K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Apple Bloom wants to try out Scootaloo's scooter, but Scootaloo refuses without giving a reason. Apple Bloom decides to try it out in secret, but an accident happens that breaks not only the scooter, but also a friendship as Apple Bloom learns the truth about the scooter and resolves to make it right. Our True Colors -- Donny's Boy Alright well, this one has orphan Scootaloo. I apologize to anyone who finds that distasteful. To make up for it, this story includes Pinkie Pie! An odd pairing for sure, I can't think of any moment these two had screen time together. Word count: 14,118 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Scootaloo has never really cared much for Pinkie Pie, and she definitely doesn’t like the way Pinkie calls her hero “Dashie.” But for some strange reason, Pinkie seems fixated on her and insistent on meddling in Scootaloo’s life. Whether Scootaloo likes it or not. My Maker -- Josh Meihaus This story is definitely one of the saddest ones I read, though that could be because I'm rather stupid (actually, it's quite likely that it's because I'm stupid). Whatever the case, you should try reading this Twilight and Smarty Pants story. Word count: 7,812 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Everyone has an imaginary friend growing up: a stuffed animal, a companion to guard us when the monsters come knocking and the like. We know them and love them; they mean everything to us. But have we ever stopped to ask what we mean to them? Ambition -- AbsoluteAnonymous Another unlikely pairing: Rarity and Pinkie Pie. Perhaps I haven't read many fanfics, but I hardly ever see these two together. It's by AA, so you can already guess my opinion on it. Word count: 4,714 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + A simple afternoon spent modifying a dress at Carousel Boutique leads to two ponies accidentally discovering that they have more in common than was once believed. A Clear, Sweet Tone -- AbsoluteAnonymous A continuation of Ambition. Check it out if you've read its prequel. Word count: 4,957 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Once, there was a little unicorn filly who was scared of many things. Almost every night, she found herself unable to sleep and could only be comforted by the singing of a certain lullaby. Years later, long after Rarity left home to pursue a career, Sweetie Belle tries to find a way to reconnect with her older sister, but that's proving to be more difficult than Sweetie expected. Immortal -- RatherHomely Here's a sadfic involving Celestia. I could go into an in-depth discussion about the downsides of immortality, but I think that that would be beating a dead horse. Word count: 2,838 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Time is a fickle thing. It never seems to spend much time with you, nor does it seem to depart when you want it to the most. This story is about an alicorn who has all the time in the world, but desperately wants to give it all away. Because forever is a long time... The Light Goes Out -- AbsoluteAnonymous Behold, AA's newest creation. It's basically the same story as Immortal, just with Twilight Sparkle now. Word count: 3,014 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + There comes a time when the light must go out; but how do you know if you've burned brightly enough? My Little Dashie -- ROBCakeran53 [Human] Any list of good fics without My Little Dashie is an awful list. I don't want to make an awful list, so here you go! If you don't cry after reading this, I think you may be doing something wrong. Word count: 12,524 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + When your life is as dull a gray as the world that surrounds you, the mundanities can make it all seem meaningless. Sometimes all we need is a little color -- or six -- to reintroduce us to what truly makes life worth living. Dreaming with Ponies -- ROBCakeran53 Written by the author of My Little Dashie, inspired by this awesome song. This revolves around Twilight's life after her 5 friends have departed. Not as sad as My Little Dashie, but still pretty good. Word count: 4,732 words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Nearly a century after six mares united under Equestria's greatest ideals, one is left to ponder her dreams, her life, and her legacy. In doing so, she may realize that friendship - much like magic - truly never dies. Circle of Friends -- Kiyyik I'm going to take a book out of the OP for this one: if you don't cry after reading this, you are a heartless rock (also, join the club). If you read this, you definitely need to listen to this song at the same time. Word count: This one is extremely short, being only ~1.5K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Hundreds of years in the future, an older, wiser pony looks out over her kingdom. A summer night brings recollection of memories and regrets. Blood, Sweat, and Tears -- Somber I like Somber just as much as I like AA. This fic involving Applejack was extremely well-done. It's interesting what authors do with Applejack's parents (or lack thereof). Word count: ~9K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + What does it mean to have a dream? What does it take to hold on to that dream and make it a reality? And what does it cost when it's all taken away from you? Simply Rarity -- Somber Fics involving Rarity always seem to be about how she starts with not a penny to her name. Either way, this journal-type fic was great. This one be sad. Word count: ~8.5K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + An argument between her friends has brought to question Rarity's generosity. Can a unicorn who's had everything and nothing truly be generous? What's Eating Rainbow Dash -- Somber People really disliked the Mare-Do-Well episodes, this one explains the problems of it perfectly. More sad by the way. Word count: ~9.5K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Mare Do Well has come and gone and Rainbow Dash has learned her lesson. Letter written, problem solved... right? Only lessons sometimes teach us more than we intend, as Twilight Sparkle learns. Pinkie Pie, and Nothing More -- Present Perfect Somber doesn't have a Pinkie Pie story, but Present Perfect did this one pretty damn well. Word count: ~2.5K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + How could Pinkie Pie have forgotten her own birthday? When you've had birthdays like she has, maybe some are worth forgetting. Bubbles -- ??? Here's a sad Derpy fic. It's awesome, so you should read it. Word count: ~2.5K words. Description: The origin story of little Derpy's cutie mark. Memorial -- Buxton Another sad Derpy fic. Not as good as Bubbles in my opinion, but it's still really good. Word count: ~1.5K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Bright Eyes makes her annual visit to her Mama's grave, and relives some sad memories along the way. Heart of Gold, Feathers of Steel -- Nicknack This one's a Gilda sadfic. It replays her episode with her point of view. That episode did end kind of suddenly. Word count: ~32.5K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + There are two sides to every conflict. Nothing is ever black-and-white; there are only many shades of gray. When viewed from another angle, even the worst actions have justification, even if that doesn't absolve the person performing them. Heart of Gold, Feathers of Steel -- Nicknack [Shipping], [Incomplete] A sequel to Heart of Gold, this one was almost as great for me as TGWP. I could say that it's even better, because it's not over yet. Word count: ~110K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + Many things flourish under the sun. While adapting to a new lifestyle, Gilda learns more about herself than she does the intricacies of being a city guard. White Box -- Chromosome Word of warning: this fic can be kind of confusing. I'd say it's more thematic than most fanfics, where the events are less important than how the characters react/whatever. The black background with white font also greatly contributed to the story. Anyways, I liked this story. It's pretty short, but the message it displays is great. The criticism for this one is the same I have for Tales, but this one is done far more obviously. Word count: ~8K words. Description: + Show Spoiler + My name is Canvas. I remember because I wrote it in the corner of the white box. It takes twelve steps to get from the cot to the wall. And the lights hurt my eyes. Here are some fics that I have not had the privilege to read, but look extremely promising. + Show Spoiler + Antipodes -- PK Eternal -- Device Heretic Tales of the Winter Magic Academy -- Storytayler Better Living Through Science and Ponies -- Pen Stroke Creeping Darkness -- Pen Stroke Changing Octaves -- Pen Stroke A Drop of Moonshine -- Pen Stroke The Steadfast Sky -- The Grey Potter Frigid Winds and Burning Hearts -- Grey Prophet Through The Eyes of Another Pony -- CardsLafter Night's Favored Child -- Municipal Engines What Separates -- Zurock Anthropology -- JasonTheHuman The Moonstone Cup -- Cyanide Background Pony -- shortskirtsandexplosions Flying High, Falling Hard -- soundslikeponies Spirits of Harmony -- Stormchaser Upheaval: Breaking Point -- Visiden Visidane Harmony -- Aquaman52 Transcendence -- Corejo ...That took far longer than I thought it would be. I didn't even write anything interesting! Well anyways, if you read (or skimmed, or whatever) through this, thanks for checking it out! Also, here's a song Not a Clever Pony made for the finale of Season 1, which I think would fit very well here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCv6Q8wpqew Nice work, great post! I'm gonna try Hearts of Gold, feathers of steel now. The first part was pretty good. The only fic I think is missing from your list is Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying. I personally think it is the very best shipfic with a slow and credible pacing, and the way the author writes gives perfect insight into how the ponies struggle with themselves and their feelings towards each other. TGWP is probably the only other shipfic which has captured me in a way like it did.

Yeah, I missed a ton of fics. I'll add that in a moment!
